Amazon Releases Free 'Kindle for iPhone' Application

I looked at it and seems like a cool idea. Sucks how you can't buy books directly from the app. Not sure how much I would use it. Right now, I'm trying to get as many IT certifications as possible (I'm pretty young and fairly new to the field) and I couldn't find any of the training books I'm looking for (CCIE, Apple Technology Coordinator). Plus, I'd like to be able to have a hard copy as well so I can highlight stuff while studying. Having a digital copy on my iPhone would be nice, too in times I don't have access to my physical books.

Actually, I got the complete works of Lovecraft on my iPhone for free, on Stanza.

I have a free version and a $.99 version off Amazon. The Amazon version is much nicer on the eyes and the layout is better. You have to remember that most free public Domain books are not formatted the best. I would rather pay $1 for some books with in a nice layout then the free version where words are all over the place.

That's actually a really great question.
I would personally prefer a book, mainly because it's easier on my eyes, and usually cheaper. I can pick up a book easily without spending any money, especially used books.
And I just like the feel of an old book.

I do too, but with the Kindle I can carry 1500 around at once!

"Not available in the New Zealand store"

Oh up yours Amazon!

Amazon is not really at fault here as the Publishers are the ones that control the rights on these works. Amazon has been public in their interest in having the Kindle platform be adopted by as many people as possible. Even if in the US people don't read anymore. the rest of the world does.

Well Amazon, at least thank you for making the App free, but come on! Why anyone would think the iPhone is a good reading surface.

On the Magazines and Newpapers, don't know the issue that is causing the problem but on the amazon site sales pages in those catagories do not suggest the iPhone/Touch as a platform, where as the sales page for book titles do. Could be a restrained on Amazon's part for now to only allow books on the iPhone and Touch.

Pj
Same here, I was getting pissed cause I thought I kept missing something. Glad I'm not the only one. I haven't tried any books, just newspapers, so I'm not sure if the books are working for me or not. I just want the damn newspaper!

Did Amazon just save me $359 or what? Thanks Amazon! Although the ending to "UR" won't have that impact people were talking about I guess.

Remember that Amazon's DRM is even nastier than Apple's. Books you rent are permanently tied to that device. Even deauthorizing a Kindle/iPod doesn't free up that "slot" for a new Kindle/iPod.

This has motivated me to finally download Stanza. Fictionwise's content is confusing-I can't tell if their DRM is better or worse than Amazon's (though certainly their founder is outspoken on the issue and dislikes it). I'm not even sure how to load my own content yet, but at least I could download a free copy of some of Samuel Clemons' work that I've missed.

I'm really annoyed at Amazon for not releasing the Kindle outside of the US. Sure they probably wouldn't be able to get "Whispernet" working everywhere, but even if I had to synch my Kindle with my PC I would still buy one!

Contrary to what many of you are saying the Kindle is a success. It's a revolutionary product, they can't make them fast enough, and proves that books can be taken into the 21st century. If Apple had made the Kindle 2 I bet at least 80% of the haters on here would be hailing it. After all, it is to books what the iPod was for music.

Please Amazon, release the Kindle in the UK. Please!!!

I installed the new Kindle app on my gen1 iPod touch.

But, I'm getting stuck at the opening "Register now to get started" screen. I put in my login information and hit register and it waits a little while and then there is a pop-up that says "No Internet Connection. Please check your WiFi or cellular data network and try again"

But, my wifi network is active, and I have tested it in other apps and it is working fine. Furthemore, using my iMac I browsed over to the Amazon "Manage My Kindle" site and it has my iPod touch information on that site and registered, after having gotten the error message in the iPod touch app.

So, it looks like my iPod is registered, but I'm stuck at the registration screen.

Anyone else have this problem or have a solution?

"No Internet Connection" iPhone Kindle App

Anyone else experience the pop up error on the iPhone Kindle app of "No Internet Connection - Please check your WiFi or cellular data network and try again" on the registration screen?

I cannot get past the registration screen because of this error.

I definitely have a WiFi and cellular signal and connection to the internet because every other app and service works perfectly.

Also the iPhone shows up in the Amazon Kindle account as being registered to the account.

I've tried the usual un-install/install, sync, etc. I even called Amazon Kindle Support and they said it was an Apple problem - yeah right!!

A quick search of google in the last 24 hours shows other people with this problem but no solution.

If anyone had this problem and found a solution please post.

Thanks you.

debroglie we must have been submitting at the same time!!! Yes I have the same problem ;-)

How does one transfer Amazon Kindle books (converted from PDF) to the iPhone version? I have tried looking around but have had no luck :( I really want to get Saddam His Rise and Fall on it.

While it's true that Amazon don't have any licences outside of the US, teh main reason for that is that they've never asked publishers for them, as they haven't got the Kindle hardware sorted out for international availability.

What do you mean? I suppose that they'd need a 230 volt power supply (I don't know whether the current one does both or not) but apart from that what's wrong with the hardware?

Here is Beatrix Potter on the iphone. This is a paid version from Amazon.

Look for H.P. Lovecraft (under kindle) and you will find several versions. One of the best looking , I've been told, is The Collected Stories of H. P. Lovecraft: Volume One (48 Classic Horror Books in One Volume!) (Kindle Edition). It has 4 volumns at .80 each. There is also The Complete H. P. LOVECRAFT Reader (68 Stories Included) which is now $6.38. It was previously, last year, at a much lower price. One thing, Amazon prices change all the time. One thing about Lovecraft you can buy him in pieces but getting collections is the way to go, you just have to try them out to see if the set-up is what you want. They even had a free version at one time but I think it was the same version you could get off places like freebooks.com.

Amazon is always offering free books. Right now you can get 16 romance novels. You need to sort low to high under the catagory.

I'm thinking that the program Stanza may be able to help you out. The version for your Mac (not your iPhone/iPod), is able to convert from pdf to the Kindle format, although I believe you may lose the images. After that point, I'm not exactly sure what you'd have to do once you have the correct file format.

I'd test it out myself, but I'm stuck at the registration screen:p

Trying it now, no images is kind of a deal breaker :(

Amazon do a free conversion (which is good apparently) but I can't work out the Kindle Email thing:confused:

There are color pictures in the Kindle ebook library, the Kindle just does not show color. You can see this by my Beatrix Potter collection. On the iphone the pictures are in color.

The wireless connectivity is EVDO which isn't widely available outside the US.

I'll have to trust you on that since EVDO has the best coverage here in NZ :) (although the same carrier is rushing out HSPA+ and hopes to have 97% coverage by the end of the month!)
