Did you even read the explanation of why it was denied? It had nothing to do with 'secondary meaning'.
Amazon may be able to compete, IF it provides an app ecosystem as good as the iTunes app store. That hasn't happened with the Kindle... maybe the Kindle Fire will be a move in that direction?

You clearly have a bias which is fine, but to create fictional scenarios in order to justify your personal preference is silly. The $200 iPad doesn't exist, and even if it did then it's still a different class of device because these are two separate markets. (Believe it or not but many iPad owners also own kindles).

Is it me or there is no Touch or Fire available on the UK site yet?
As I said before, this is a great device for the limited use it has. Of all of the other Android devices, Amazon will support it for OS and firmware updates which makes the Fire a competitor to the iPad for the casual user. It will eat in to iPad sales this Christmas due to the economy.
I think that is way too generous. 10% would be quite significant. But I think your theory is correct. Right now people are reacting to the price. Once people understand the Fire's limitations they'll understand just because something is a color tablet doesn't mean it's an iPad competitor b/c the iPad is closer to a computer than an eReader, which stripped down, that is what the Fire still is.
No, they won't. This is hardly a tablet.
The other thing that is less fortunate about the Kindle Fire is the dependence upon the cloud... I personally don't want all of my information running through all of Amazon's servers. That said, even if you don't mind that, you're still dependent upon a mobile Internet connection, and we all know how well those work
I like the fact that you can choose what gets rendered where, but I question the actual device performance, especially when you have poor or no Internet service. If you're out of coverage you're out of content... 8GB isn't exactly overfilling anything.
it's not supposed to - rival in specs, that is.

My children will be thrilled this holiday season to have a tablet, which I wasn't prepared to spend $500 + tax for, but they will get the Fire for $199 tax free.
7 inches, no 3G connectivity, no camera, and no microphone. They should give this dog away.
Get over yourself, Boston007.
The Kindle Fire has:
(a) ads - unless you buy a more expensive version
(b) no 3G
(c) less battery life
(d) smaller screen
(e) no camera or microphone
(f) not all the same sensors (for rotating screen, proximity sensors, etc)
(g) no GPS
Looks like it costs less, because you get less.
If that's what you need, fine. This definately covers that niche. But it definately not the same specs as an iPad. To say that is to be an Android Fan Boy.
It's definately great for it's price. But, it's not an iPad.[/QUOTE]
WHO SAID IT WAS?
It's a great competitor to the iPad. Maybe people don't need the camera or mic or whatnot.
It's YOU who needs to get over yourself.
