Apple can do what they did with the iPhones, a lower price point for a prior gen device. When the iPad 3 comes out, the iPad 2 should be priced at around $350 to somewhat compete in the low end tablet market.

I like what Amazon is doing. They are basically selling you a hand-carried Amazon store to you and will make money off your purchases. Apple is limited to media content, but Amazon sells everything. And the price point is superb. I was thinking that it'll go for $299... Amazon may have redefined the tablet market at the $199 price point.

If I were an investor, I'd prefer Company A. You know the one that rakes in the cash in RECORD amounts? Company B is apparently a charitable organization, not a business. This is about pure profit, rake in the cash, take no prisoners! :apple:

Just because you charge less doesn't mean you aren't making a boatload of money. Both models work. Walmart seems to be doing fine.

Kindle Fire is a seriously cool device. I want me some of that.

Since I pretty much only use my iPad for reading books and comics anyway, I might sell it and get this. Just maybe.

Kindle Fire will be the gift to get this Christmas, or sooner.

(Ha, I just got ...Kindle Fire!, as in "to kindle a fire". :D)

I am intrigued by this announcement.

The Fire worries me because the rumor is, they are just altered Playbooks.
Amazon has a real tablet coming out but wanted something quick for the holidays.
At $199 it is pretty much a no brainer.

I really want to get the Kindle Touch.

I love my Kindle 3 so much and they really didn't announce any features to get me to sell it.

I would love to have seen color (one can dream but I thought by now they would have had something, even base color) and some sort of back light tech.
My old LED watch from the 80s could do it, why not Kindle?
You would have to add the cost of a $70 light enabled cover like the Kindle 3.

They say the iPad is tough to read in direct sunlight, well, the Kindle is 10 X worse in a soft lit room. A little internal light source would have sold it to me.

I would also like to see improvements in web browsing and PDF viewing.
I have no idea what that will be like.

They are the fourth generation and they are still calling it "experimental"? give me a break.

So a touch screen and smaller footprint is nice but I need to see what they mean by "enhanced e-ink tech" since Engadget sure didn't have a clue.

People need to STOP COMPARING IT TO AN IPAD. Look at it as its own device. For $199 you're getting a device that can read books, watch videos on Amazon Prime, browse the internet, and access to an app store from a reputable company. Not bad at all for only $199.

so why is it on macrumours?

e: why on earth am i getting down votes on this?! "STOP COMPARING IT TO AN IPAD"? i mean, of course people are going to compare it to an iPad, it's a remarkably similar product. why shouldn't they? surely the fact that it is posted as a front-page story on a rumour site for apple products exemplifies this?

I will echo my thoughts that I posted on Engadget...

I preordered less than 10 minutes after the keynote, for me $199 is pretty close to impulse territory. I also wanted to reserve a place in line, as I can see these becoming difficult to find this Holiday season. Thankfully Amazon doesn't charge until the item ships, so I should have until at least end of October to see if my excitement wanes.

It's no iPad killer, but I think it is something that will make a dent in iPad's armor. I have an iPad 1, and while I really enjoy it, it is a PITA to read with in bed. 7" is a good form factor for reading in bed or with one hand. And honestly, I feel iPad's interface is getting a bit stale. I think Amazon's interface/skin on the Fire is pretty darn sharp looking.

I don't feel I am missing anything by not having cameras on my iPad, that is what I have my phone for. A minor inconvenience is the lack of a mic on the Fire, my g/f uses my iPad for Skype, so I may just end up giving her the iPad. The 7" form is also going to be nice for my other main iPad use, an internet enabled cookbook. For me the Fire is seeming like a no brainer, thankfully I have over a month to decide.

Christmas morning

Timmy: opens his present... Wow, Santa brought me an iPad.

Dad: ah, Timmy, that is an Amazon Fire. Pretty cool huh?

Timmy: oh. Give tablet to the dog for a chew toy.

Two year in the future..

Christmas morning.

Timmy: opens his present...Wow, dad got me a MacBook.

Dad: ah, Tim, that is a Acer 6 pound laptop.

Timmy: oh. Dad, I see you still suck.

Timmy: Mom, can we go to the Apple Store today?

Mom: sure. And your dad will not be going with us.

I'm a huge fan of Apple products and currently have an iPad, but the Kindle Fire is a very nice device for only $199. I have wanted a 7" iPad since the iPad was introduced, but Apple says  nobody wants that size tablet. I don't agree. Once I settled in with my iPad, I realize that I pretty much use it for reading books, surfing, watching an occasional movie, maybe some music when I don't have my iPod, and looking at my photos. The Kindle will do all of this and will fit in my back pocket. I think I need one! :D

My only complaint about my iPad - too big...

A $199 Color Kindle is a no-brainer...

wow, those kids are spoiled douche-bags.

I love Apple, but f everything about that. Christmas is more than consumerism.

With Apple's ass on Fire now they will be forced to become less greedy. Their current 40% profit margins are bordering on criminal offense (profiteering, price gouging).

I think I'd miss all the apps and the cameras (I use them quite a bit), and the accelerometer (lots of games use it and it let's me hold my iPad 2 as much as I want). Plus, I don't want to have to pay 80 bucks a year to get content.

So let's see if I have this right.

Dad buys his kid high priced electronics.
Timmy has an unrealistic level of entitlement and is disrespectful to his father
Mom also disrespects father - and in front of their entitled child.

Do I have your scenario correct?

Oh come on, lighten up Francis, it was a _little_ funny :)
