I think I'd miss all the apps and the cameras (I use them quite a bit), and the accelerometer (lots of games use it and it let's me hold my iPad 2 as much as I want). Plus, I don't want to have to pay 80 bucks a year to get content.

I don't know about you but I order all types of things from amazon and the free shipping and or cheaper 2nd day shipping you get for being a prime customer pays for itself after ordering just a few things. Plus streaming is included with prime membership. $80 is nothing

I will echo my thoughts that I posted on Engadget...

I preordered less than 10 minutes after the keynote, for me $199 is pretty close to impulse territory. I also wanted to reserve a place in line, as I can see these becoming difficult to find this Holiday season. Thankfully Amazon doesn't charge until the item ships, so I should have until at least end of October to see if my excitement wanes.

It's no iPad killer, but I think it is something that will make a dent in iPad's armor. I have an iPad 1, and while I really enjoy it, it is a PITA to read with in bed. 7" is a good form factor for reading in bed or with one hand. And honestly, I feel iPad's interface is getting a bit stale. I think Amazon's interface/skin on the Fire is pretty darn sharp looking.

I don't feel I am missing anything by not having cameras on my iPad, that is what I have my phone for. A minor inconvenience is the lack of a mic on the Fire, my g/f uses my iPad for Skype, so I may just end up giving her the iPad. The 7" form is also going to be nice for my other main iPad use, an internet enabled cookbook. For me the Fire is seeming like a no brainer, thankfully I have over a month to decide.

I've heard a couple people say they have a hard time reading in bed with their iPads, but I do it all the time. It's really not that heavy, and you can lean it against your legs or lay on your side. Besides, the Fire weighs only a half pound less.

Add in the missing features and some of the shortcuts (two-finger multitouch?!), and I'll stick with my iPad 2, thanks.

I think they did the right thing by choosing a 7" screen. My wife has the Galaxy Tab 7" and it is much easier to hold with one hand than my iPad. It also runs Android phone apps much better than the iPad runs iPhone-specific apps (not that that is a problem since there are so many high quality iPad-specific and universal apps).

The 7" size is more portable and kind of a sweet spot for some people. I would be happy with a 7" smart phone, come to think of it.

Without 3G, I guess portability isn't as important with the Kindle Fire as it is with other tablets, but if people are using it as an ereader then they'll carry it with them. My biggest complaint about the iPad has been that it's hard to hold in a comfortable position. The 7" tablet is lighter and smaller, so it's much easier to hold it in one hand like a paperback book.

Also, I don't think Amazon is necessarily taking the iPad head on. They simply chose to accelerate their Kindle success. There is some overlap, sure, but it's not like Motorola or Samsung with their 3G enable 10" tablets; those are competing directly with the iPad in features and price (and losing miserably). The Kindle Fire will sort of do an end around the iPad and appeal to a different set of customers along with a smaller number who choose a Kindle Fire over an iPad.

The more competition the better, but in this case it's not necessarily head-on competition.

So ummm. What is amazon gonna do about all those nasty commercials about not being able to see on an iPad outdoors now that they have the same problem ?

They can show the person pulling a Kindle Touch out of their back pocket, putting their Kindle Fire in their back pocket, and then deciding what to do with the $200 they have left over after buying both Amazon devices instead of Apple's for $500....which has no chance fitting in the back pocket.

One thing that has been under the radar is getting Amazon Prime as a one-month FREE trial. Not only do we get two-day free shipping but also get to stream thousands of movies and TV shows FREE for an entire month. I can watch the entire series of Mad Men now for FREE and never have to worry buying it. $79 per year is actually cheaper than Netflix per year which is $7.99 monthly. That is SWEET. Free movies and TV shows for a whole month and commercial-free. Even more savings compared to renting them off iTunes. Just renting one movie cost like $3 on Amazon. iTunes charges $4 to rent a new movie. That free trial while watching hundreds of shows or TV shows streaming from Amazon should save me a whole lot in that one month alone compared to iTunes in the short-term and Netflix in the longer-term.

This is why Amazon kicks ass. They like saving their customers money!

So let's see if I have this right.

Dad buys his kid high priced electronics.
Timmy has an unrealistic level of entitlement and is disrespectful to his father
Mom also disrespects father - and in front of their entitled child.

Do I have your scenario correct?

Correct and he deserves it because he didnt love his son enough to buy him Apple products. By the way, 200 bucks isn't high priced these days.

So you will need to carry around 2 large devices ?

I'd rather pay more to
A. Get more and
B. not have to carry around more than one device.

I don't order enough from them to make a Prime membership worth it.

It is absolutely disgusting how much the Apple fanboys are bashing this product when they don't even understand fully what it does, or what it is capable of. Most of the comments I've read are all opinion, with little to no fact associated with it.

Amazon brought out a STRONG product at an unbelieveable price point. $199 for something that many, MANY people are looking for. Is it a true tablet? Somewhat. Is it as full featured as an iPad? No, but it also doesn't even cost close to as much as a base iPad.

Honestly, the smugness displayed by some Apple owners makes me embarassed to even say I own anything Apple branded. Not everyone wants, or can afford an iPad. I don't want an iPad, but I can afford one, does that make me stupid???

COMPETITION IS GOOD, PEOPLE!!!!

And I can't wait for one of these people to wind up with shards of glass in their butt cheeks because they forgot it was in their back pocket and sat down.

I think it is a terrifically strong product. It's as if an iPod touch and a Kindle hooked up.

If this is successful, Google is the big loser.

The HP TouchPad rules nothing. There is no stock and there won't be any new stock ever. It's done.

That's irrelevant- that's like saying that because the iPad 1 is no longer produced, it therefore rules nothing since it is only sold used and refurbished (like the Touchpad, except that it's new and used).

No stock doesn't mean anything- you can pick from thousands on eBay/other resellers who are selling for $300<. It holds a significant place in the tablet market.

No it does not and it never will.

At that price point it'll definitely take off. Something none of the competitors even bothered to challenge Apple on.

And you are a hypocrite for calling it a STRONG product and you haven't used one. Honestly, your smugness makes me wish you didn't own Apple products.

Not an iPad killer, but an iPod Touch killer!

It does almost everything an iPod Touch does (music, touch games, mobile web), except that it's a bit heavier. And much easier to read for people without hawk eyesight. And likely faster at web browsing with silk.

And it actually costs less.

And nothing is said about the anti-Apple nerds saying Apple is greedy and selfish and doomed. Anyone who dares write something against this thing is given nothing but negative votes and is shouted down by objections from the Apple haters.

Check it out: I dared bring up the raging anti-Apple sentiment here, and I get doused with negatives votes. Predictable...

I want to like the Prime service but then again I can get it for free from the library on DVD.

Why are people getting so excited? If you're just in it for reading and some browsing then fair enough, but it isn't much competition to iPad. The hardware, for $199, isn't exactly going to be exciting as well as a mere 7in screen. It'll just be a branded version of those current no-namer 7in android tabs that has a more personalised UI and apps linked to amazon services.

The hardware is fine, it has a dual core processor and the same amount of ram as an ipad. Things like 3G and cameras are nice but rarely needed for a tablet. Most people would like a tablet but they dont want to spend $500 on one the HP touchpad is a perfect example. Amazon will sell these as fast as they can make them. Apple should be very afraid, Jobs probably crapped himself when he hrard the price. Expect Apple to do what they do best sue.

definitely an iPad killer for me. I've been missing my iPad ever since i had to sell it but now i know i'll be getting the FIRE :D
