Unless they are selling it in stores, it's not going to be a big competitor to the iPad. iPads are displayed in stores to be played with and people fall in love with them. If Amazon is only selling online, it's going to be more of a risk to buy one if you can't play with it first.

You have never seen a Kindle in a store? Best Buy, Office max, Staples just to name a few all carriers that have them on display to "play" with.

There was a large void under $500 left by Apple's product lineup. Amazon just nailed it across the board. If you've got the money, you'll get an iPad. But $200 is freaking insane.

And then of course, going down the ladder with kindles: $149, $99, $79. Wow.

Ahhh, so wireless technology is only just now becoming mainstream!

FYI, the Zune had wifi syncing when it was released 5 years ago, it isn't exactly rocket science. This has always been an obvious missing feature from the iOS devices. It's great to finally be getting it (whenever 5 comes), but let's not make excuses for something that Apple should have had years ago.

Ah, that's definitely a gotchya on my part. Can't blame me for not knowing that info about the zune ;) Anyways, whatever the reason is, I'm sure it'll be nice to finally have, but honestly I haven't been inconvenienced at all. Maybe it's one of those, "I don't know how I lived without it" types of things when I actually start using it.

The new $79 Kindle is perfect for me as an iPad user. It is the cheapest (which is important because it sucks paying more for overlapping features), it is the absolute smallest (which is important because it sucks carrying two devices with overlapping features) and yet gives me that e-ink screen I so badly want in the sun/vacation etc.

The new $99 Kindle Touch is perfect for my wife to replace her beloved 3rd gen Kindle since it is smaller, touch based and has the X-Ray feature.

Nice job Amazon.

It's now the Amazon Kindle Fire and Apple iPad market. All other Android tablet makers should just throw in the towel.

I love my iPad to death, but if anyone thinks a $200 tablet WON'T hurt iPad's market share they're kidding themselves.

Does this mean I will soon be able to get an iPad for $199....????? :D

This is a very very very attractive price.

I guess if Apple came out with a smaller 7" iPad with no microphone, no 3g, and no camera, and priced it at $199, Apple would have another hit on their hands.

$199 seems like the right price for a 7 inch web browser basic tablet.

"We feel the same way about syncing." Showing an Apple USB cable -- big laughs here.

I think he's in for a shock when iOS 5 comes around...

Anyone with a clue knows ios5 finally has wi-fi syncing, stop being a fanboy and acknowledge needing a cable for ipad/iphone syncing has been a huge PITA.

So ipod touch with only 3.5 inch screen costs more than Kindle Fire with 7 inch?

Fix your price apple. I am getting kindle fire. You got a work to do until October 4th.

The HP TouchPad rules nothing. There is no stock and there won't be any new stock ever. It's done.

That's irrelevant- that's like saying that because the iPad 1 is no longer produced, it therefore rules nothing since it is only sold used and refurbished (like the Touchpad, except that it's new and used).

No stock doesn't mean anything- you can pick from thousands on eBay/other resellers who are selling for $300<. It holds a significant place in the tablet market.

gotta love the $199 price point.

I really do think folks would gobble up these tablets if the pricepoint were more complementary to also owning a computer.

The price point also means you can carry it around with less worry about it getting stolen or damaged. Part of me hates carrying my iPad knowing that one drop and I'm out $600.

And man I'm alway nervous when my 4 yr old plays with my iPad.

The Fire is not exactly an iPad competitor though. NOt a direct one. I'm sure Amazon wants consumers to think that and, from this thread, you can see some already view it as a direct substitute.

Putting the tablet aside right now: Silk is killer- sick. Nobody can argue how precious whispersync works.

All I can hear is SJ ripping someones head off as we speak on MM, and iCloud.

That folks, is where is may bite apple in the behind.

Yeah, definitely makes iCloud sound like a sub-par offering, if Amazon can really deliver on the "invisible" syncing. Though for my part, I still refuse to lay any cash down for DRM infested media that's linked to particular devices or accounts.

It might not, but for 199$, it's much cheaper than the iPad and any other tablets. ;)

I only bought my TouchPad because of the price. I don't really believe in the tablet form factor. I would never have paid 499$ for one. This 199$ price tag, for a tablet that does apps, games, movies, music, books (basically, 95% of what the iPad is used for) is going to bring a lot of folk to the form factor that might not have considered it before.

I agree 100% :) And it's very likely I'll get one, because I shop at Amazon a lot, I have Amazon Prime. But Kindle Touch for $99 looks even more attractive. It's not a game changer but it'll definitely put a lot of pressure on Apple and will squeeze the last breath of air out of the rest.

Tell that to the roughly 18 Million people buying an iPod this holiday season ;)

How long before Apple sues their pants off? Let's see...it's rectangular, and has a color display...and you can touch the screen....and....and....

1. I don't like the split browsing. Now Amazon has the potential to know all of my browsing habits, not just through cookies. What is their privacy policy regarding this?

2. Love it. If anyone can compete with Apple in the content market it is Amazon.

3. They will probably sell enough of their cheapest kindle that people will begin to abandon the itunes store for book purchases. Why buy a book through itunes, when I can read it on my $79 kindle, and on my ipad through the kindle app.

Spot on! Hence why I think the iPod Touch is going 4.2'. Even so, Apple will have to drop prices. Which of course they never do. So it's the ecosystem that's keeping us locked in. Hey, for $199 I can afford to live in parallel universes. I am buying one (and wait for the iPad 3 to blow me away if I am going get one and then hand the Fire down to one of my kids)
