"We feel the same way about syncing." Showing an Apple USB cable -- big laughs here.

I think he's in for a shock when iOS 5 comes around...

No shock. Just pointing out that Fire customers won't have to wait two years after its introduction to get wireless syncing.

I highly doubt Apple will reduce their price. Think of it this way, Amazon HAD to have a cheap price like that with their software offering. From everything I've seen, so far, this is purely a media consumption device. It does not have the power to drive "business apps" like the iPad does (financial, medical, media production, gen. business, etc...). Without the power of these apps, I think amazon hit the nail on pricing @ $200. This is purely consumption device. Now iPad, at first it seemed it was purely consumption, but because of the power of the apps, it has grown into, you can argue, a viable laptop replacement. I know we replace my wifes macbook with an iPad. I can't believe I'm saying this, but apple is positioned, whether intentional or not, to bring tablets mainstream in the workplace. There's a lot more that goes into my thoughts, but I don't want to ramble on anymore. My 2 cents.

well considering the technology is becoming mainstream available at the same time, it's not a surprise. they'd have had to do the same if they released 2 years ago ;)

c'mon Apple.... what are you waiting for? sue them!!! I'm sure they are using something you can claim you invented - like the use of a button to turn it on/off, or the thin rectangular shape, or touching the device for it to interact with the user.... anything! just keep anyone from competing and we'll all be all right.

[/sarcasm]

:D

iPad is priced aggressively. That's why it dominates the tablet industry.

7" devices didn't sold in the market so Amazon has to price it low, probably below cost.

No it is not .. the iPad is sold with a huge margin and washes millions into Apples bank account.
And, no it is not .. the iPad dominates the tablet market because it is pretty much the only working product out there. All the Android tablets I tried seemed overly sluggish and underpowered. Apple was smart enough to avoid that and came up with something that works.
Which is exactly why this Amazon tablet could potentially be a real competitor for a change. Amazon has proven in the past to also be able to come up with products that work for the customers and additionally they are really aggressive about getting into certain markets (to the point where they take losses to gain a good market position).
I do agree however .. I am not sure about a 7" choice .. would be the wrong size for me .. I feel the iPad is borderline to small for many tasks.

Great news! I will wait to see how it is going and maybe than I will buy one.

Apple price of the iPad here in EU is not normal ... 600 €.
If Amazon will be really selling their tablet for 200 €, than it will be a winner!

love that liquid ink tech, or what even it's called.

It's my hands-down my preference for long reads, so I'm glad amazon's keeping it in the mix.

Someone please explain to me why kindle costs 79 dollars to 149 dollars, but iPod nano costs 149-179 dollars?

Apple needs to drop the price on every damn ipods.

If I want to videocall someone (be it facetime or skype) or listen to music, I will use my iPhone. If I want something to sit on a coffee table so I can play the odd game and browse the net then Kindle fire provides a viable alternative. Hell, can even pre-load a movie to watch on the go. If (a big if) I can muster the energy to get myself out of the iTunes/iOS ecosystem.

Decent points, but, to spend $199 just to read a book or watch a movie, when you have to subscribe $79 per year to watch movies, is it worth it? With the iPad, you can do much, much more, granted, at a higher price.

Price War - Bring it on... that is obviously following the raft of patent disputes that Apple is no doubt filling as I type :D

For me, this does not fly.

The original Kindles were for book reading, all well and good - eink making them last on one charge for months.

Now with this one, they are just bringing in another tablet to the market, all be it with some neat apps to mask what is ANDROID underneath.

It's cheap, which appeals for some - especially android phone users, but it's 7" display I'm sure will be leaving buyer a little wanting if they are going to watch movies on it.

Liquid ink? :O sounds...revolutionary!

When I first saw this my reaction was that of Nelson from Simpsons - "Ha Ha"

Opera should be worried about Amazon Silk.

Yeah, sounds like a much improved version of what Opera is doing with Opera Mini (where all the rendering is off loaded to the cloud). Definitely sounds like a good use of EC2 for Amazon and would make the browsing experience much better on mobile devices.

7" IPS and a dual core for $199? Time to tell the masses around here. Not to mention all those Kindle books they can get at the library.

All I can say is this device is going to DESTROY all Android tablets. It won't compete with the iPad except on price point. It is designed for content consumption only, but its going to be a great tablet.

I still stand by what I said earlier. iPad will stay strong.

Thank you. I tried searching for an coverage of this, and even Google kept pointing me back to the MacRumors site. Is there not an AmazonRumors site?

Ahhh, so wireless technology is only just now becoming mainstream!

FYI, the Zune had wifi syncing when it was released 5 years ago, it isn't exactly rocket science. This has always been an obvious missing feature from the iOS devices. It's great to finally be getting it (whenever 5 comes), but let's not make excuses for something that Apple should have had years ago.
