I must be the only person that thinks this looks cool.

and I must be the only person that lives a boring life that absolutly no one would ever want to eaves drop on. I don't know why, a twenty minute argument with my 11yo on cereal choices in the morning is a fun conversation to hear.

No--you are not the only one--there are quite a few in this thread with positive remarks--and if you are a Prime member--getting a quality bluetooth speaker for $100 for is a pretty good deal. :)

The majority of people don't think like you guys. They don't care what this may be copying nor do they care about Amazon's spending habits. I think it's a good product. Families are into shared tech like Nintendo Wii. This is just like an "AI like" version of Google wrapped in a speaker. For the price I think it could be a fun little toy. It's not like it's $500 or something. Movies like 'Her' are getting society acclimated to this tech and it's going to come in a big way.

But this kind of stuff is going to be the next big thing and I'm curious if Apple is going to make this jump or not. Might we see a future where households don't have five $1,000 Apple products but instead fifty $100 Apple products? I don't know if they have that in them.

theyve been making mass market consumer computing goods since 1977...are the only one from that day still around...and eat up all the profits in both the PC and mobile spaces...i think they have it in them to do whatever they want.

I don't understand the negative thoughts and comments...

Sure its a technology that already exist, but its a new way to USE the technology.

Just imagine this will make way to smart homes having the whole house deck out with this, it will be like Alfred your butler, or JARVIS in your whole house.

Why not? There is already house that have everything wired up, from lights, to locks, everything.

Personally this is exciting :D

If this was from Apple
"The iRoom, wow, very cool, and it leverages my whole Apple EcoSystem investment, blah, blah blah...."

from Google.
"Sucks."

I'm most definitely an Apple fanboy but the delusional comments are inane at best. 'WTF is this piece of crap?'... Are you serious? It's pretty cool if you ask me.

I wouldn’t mind having an alarm clock next to my bed with these features…I’d love the ability to ask basic questions without having to get out of bed or grab my iPhone or iPad. “Hey Siri” only works when the phone is plugged in, right? That’s really the only negative. This Amazon device would always be plugged in.

agreed. How can anyone not think it is pretty cool. We are on a tech forum!

That is a good point. The kitchen and the bedroom seem like to two places to keep it.

Here's an analysis of another of these "smart" devices.

http://www.brennancenter.org/analysis/im-terrified-my-new-tv-why-im-scared-turn-thing

But the service comes with a rather ominous warning: “Please be aware that if your spoken words include personal or other sensitive information, that information will be among the data captured and transmitted to a third party.” Got that? Don’t say personal or sensitive stuff in front of the TV.

Ubi is dead.

I guess this kills Ubi. This seems like a better device and it is backed by a better-known company.

I've been thinking about turning off Siri / dictation on my iPhone for a long time... I haven't, but at the same time, the number of times I use Siri each year could be counted on one hand.

Siri is great for setting alarms and reminders. So much more convenient than using the equivalent app to achieve the same thing.

How would you be. Wake up wanting a bit of action with your misses and she tells you to piss off so she can keep sleeping. You give up and turn on your radio/echo which is positioned right next to her and she doesn't add any further crap to her diatribe?

What would have been better is echo recording the wifes rant and the husband playing it back to her on repeat while he got ready.

I think this kind of product would help men everywhere in winning arguments with their partners.

I wonder if I can change it from responding to "Alexa" to "computer." Just something that would appeal to my pointy eared friend.:p

I would name it "Bitch".

"Bitch, what's the time."
"Bitch, say my name."

If it was able to make sandwiches....

I requested an invite. Seems like a cool idea.

I'm not usually one to get all paranoid, but I do have a slight reservation about this speaker ALWAYS listening to me....not that I ever do/plan anything illegal.

Not sure if I'm going to actually pull the trigger, but color me intrigued.

Apple's idea back in the early 90's of how a smart assistant would be.

I think Amazon's Echo has lots of potential considering the interconnect-ability of other home devices.

sounds good to me. for $99 you get a nice bluetooth speaker and can try this alexa ai for free. invite already requested.

to all the people who say this is redundant to a iPhone: it depends on the microphone quality. if your phone is not in your hand then siri is quite useless. having one of those in every room in the house could be neat. especially when the voice recognitions turns out to be good and functionality expands. we see the beginning of the home intrusion aeh.....networking aera.
