I agree! It's very fun to watch Apple Competitors trying to beat Apple products before they release. Same thing happened with iPad, and now, it's happening with iPad Pro, new Apple TV and iWatch. Even rumors are enough to make competitors scared.

You think that Amazon just started this project based on rumors? Really? Yeah. OK.

Why Amazon's Unveiling of Fire TV Was Underwhelming

Wall Street analyst Michael Pachter of Wedbush Securities was not impressed with the launch. Pachter rates Amazon at "neutral" with a price target of $330. "We thought Fire TV's debut was underwhelming, and believe that Amazon missed an opportunity to introduce a highly-differentiated device," Pachter writes in a note.

Amazon the stock is not the same as Amazon the company. Should we list out the times that analysts have claimed that Apple has not impressed analysts?

Completely irrelevant to what may or may not be a sales win for Amazon.

I'm actually surprised YOU of all people are quoting an analyst.

You do know that Amazons hardware is developed two blocks away from 1 Infinite Loop. I wouldn't be surprised at some corporate espionage going on.

To sum it up in one sentence: I only pick on Apple because I know in my guts that with just a little bit less self-centeredness they could deliver products that are so much better then they already are.

Pot meets Kettle.

Unless you replaced it with something with more features, I don't get why people say things like this. It hasn't lost any functionality since you first bought it... if there is simply nothing special about it, then why purchase in the first place?

I didn't, I would have went with a Roku (more apps). It was my girlfriend's. Hell, I enjoy my Chromecast more than the Apple TV because I can use my tablet and phone as a controller. I hope Apple does something similar next time around. All the new one needs is an App store and I'm sold.

It also has sharp edges which was complained about internally and never changed.

Is this really an issue? It's a device that might be handled ONCE… to put it on a shelf after plugging in some wires to connect it to a TV. I think the edges could be razor blades and not be that big a deal given how little this box is likely to be touched. I've owned :apple:TVs since 2007 but I bet I've actually touched it's "less sharp" edges 5 times in those 7 years (3 times to repair/replace the hard drives in gen 1).

I would think rather than spinning small potatoes stuff, those who can simply hate it because it's not branded with an Apple could focus on the issues that are most tangible: Fire will not work with iTunes DRM, Fire will not run iOS apps, Fire will not readily link with iTunes in the same way that :apple:TV does for non DRM content, Fire may not work as well as :apple:TV on the benefits of :apple:TV most connected to Apple hardware & software. There's plenty there.

Apple Comcast Deal

Comcast is most certainly interested in Apple TV. I get frequent surveys from their Comcast Advisors Panel Team and many of the questions specifically ask about the Apple TV, how it is used in your home, etc. Pretty exciting news.

You're right! Apple must be sending in spies to Amazon so they can figure out what they're going to do with the next Apple TV.

See what I did there to the conspiracy theory of yours.

My issue with my Apply TVs is that for several updates in software, they (Apple) keeps missing a vital feature for something that should be a media hub. And that's the ability (without a companion device) be able to search or at least jump from letter to letter when looking at media.

I have close to 800 movies in iTunes - yet I have to scroll through them all to get to the one I want? That's just ridiculous. Are the iOS developers for Apple TV using their device for single one-off rentals or do they only test the software with a few titles? Because I can't imagine anyone in that department believing that not having a search/jump to letter function isn't a REQUIRED element.

But hey - that's just me and my .02.

What you are missing is that both these devices are meant first and formost as gateways to the companies echosystems, ITunes for ATV and Prime and Instant video for Amazon. The Amazon will skirt this issue because it can run a 3rd party app, namely Plex, that can do what you want, Apple TV cannot at this point

kick in the nutz

I'd like to know why Apple isn't pursuing some kind of unlimited streaming to compete with Amazon and Netflix. That seems to be a market just perfect for the Apple TV that hasn't been tapped yet.

I think they are close to it. The kick in the nuts that most of these other player will not see coming is iTunes Match for Movies. All your movies that you got from elsewhere not only from iTunes now matched.

I don't think you understood my issue.

I have almost 800 movies in my iTunes library.

When I go to play one - I have to scroll through the list to find it unless I use an iPhone or iPad to add keyboard functionality.

iOS already has a keyboard function because you have to enter a username and password to get it to work. Where's that keyboard pop up when you want to select a movie?

It looks pretty cool.. and sure looks fast.. the real test will be to see how many developers get on board and produce compelling games and content to utilize the hardware.

Yeah, I know they announced several developers were on board.. but let me tell you. I'm 40 years old, and I've watched countless very capable platforms get launched over the years that claim they have big studio support, and end up falling flat because at the end of the day, awesome hardware is only as good as the cool games (or apps) it can play.

In short, "first to market" only means something if it's accompanied by the next must have app or game.

What I DO see is a very capable streaming device for $99.. which would give it the edge over the Roku 3 but not enticing enough for me to pull the trigger ahead of Apple's nextgen device.. and nothing to give me a good reason to replace my Roku 2 XS.

Lots of Apple people at Lab126, lots of Lab126 people at Apple. They both stink.

Just bought one. I've been waiting far too long for a low cost, high performance device that would readily allow me to stream MKV's across my local network. I really wanted it to be the next apple TV but I can't wait any longer, sorry apple.

I did the same thing. My ATV has just been sitting there after picking up the PS4, sure hope that in the future Apple gets things going faster and that the Shark that they have jumped comes back in to view. Not leaving Apple or the products that I love, but come on you "used" to be the innovator and now I look at my iPhone 5S and say, hmmmm there are a lot of other phones out there that kick your butt and I stay with you? So I guess my ATV gets kicked to the curb for now.

On to bigger, better and faster things. The Amazon universe continues to grow!

Software update? Doesn't the ATV have an A5 and 512MB of RAM? This thing is quad core and 2 GBs. The ATV is not fit for gaming in it's current state. It's gonna need a hardware and software overhaul.
You can ALREADY run games on your iPad and port them to your TV using the Apple TV...

I don't even see the point of making the Apple TV a DEDICATED gaming device, and the fact that Amazon made theirs one makes no difference to me, nor does it put them ahead of Apple.

And Blackberry was as lot more successful than the iPhone in 2006

So you're saying that the Gear will be ubiquitous with "smart watch" and the one to beat after YEARS of huge success before Apple enters the market and makes an impact?

I agree with you although (I may be wrong) not all games support this feature.

Also I have tried it with Real Racing 2 and really it was a mixed experience.

I would much prefer to run the games locally on the device.

No, I'm saying there isn't a smart watch to beat yet and apple could come out with a really good one, like they have with the iPhone, the iPad, etc.

Back on topic though, the amazon fire looks cool and it'll be interesting to see what apple has been working on.

Announce the new AppleTV, please....

If Apple has a new AppleTV in the works, I really wish they'd announce it before friends and family buy this. I'd really like F&F to stick with devices that I own, it's way more easier to debug over the phone when they call.
