will it have access to iTunes rentals and purchases? if not, I'll pass.

isn't that what some folks ask about ATV and prime? the answer to the first will be the answer to the second. same reason.

Ah, no thank you.

I'd rather get the Roku 3 streaming device instead, even if that lacks YouTube access. The Roku has access to hundreds of streaming channels--and that includes Amazon Instant Video.

I'm pretty sure this is what amazon call 'Big Screen', though that may just be a code name. They've been advertising jobs in London for the Big Screen team.

Umm, Amazon makes a profit from products that retailers and resellers sell through their accounts.
Yes they sell kindles, and have prime members, who rent... but I don't think their profit majorities come from that.

Oh, and I am not saying I have a problem with Amazon coming out with their own box - thats great and all - wish them luck, I do...

But meanwhile, strike a deal with all the other "box makers" and maximize your profits. Sure come out with a box set of your own - your existing followers may trend toward your box... but I say go big or go home.

Like anyone here really cares about Apple or Amazon profit. I really don't know why people have to bring up profit when it sounds so irrelevant to the customer. Customers don't care about profits for a product they purchase from a company. We talking about a product and not the profit of a company. Heh we are customers paying for these companies to stay alive.

And it turns out that you can put the Roku into developer mode, and sideload a third party YouTube channel. It takes almost no time to do. (I did it and my daughter is very happy now.)

Everones getting on-board the set-top box.

However, a hocky puck would have been more realistic.

Maybe this plus many more features ATV *doesn't* support, and never will.
