I could have swore I’ve seen some spec’d for dell inspirons
I believe there are AMD processors for laptops but they're not the Ryzon high performance ones but the low cost and low performance variants

There are only Zen+ APUs at best.

Zen 2 APUs should come next year. Then you can have 8-core instead of 4-core.

I see , perhaps its for apple entry level offerings ?
I think he meant non-Ryzen AMD chips for laptops that aren't Apple. Apple doesn't offer any computer with AMD chips. They have an exclusive partnership with Intel.

I dont want amd cpu inside until we can have thunderbolt 3 or the future 4...intel still doesn't license it

You do realize that AMD has PCIe 4.0 in its newer CPUs right? That means almost double speed of PCIe 3.0.

Sure, and its especially great for mobile devices, but lack of native TB3 is an issue. Of course, it will all be solved when USB 4.0 comes out.

Incase anyone missed it at CES 2020 AMD Ryzen 4800H is destroying all Intels CPU and at half the TDP. And delivered desktop class performance beating Intels desktop CPUs.
fast forward to 15:25 for the good stuff.

Anyways. From the veterans here I know it’s too late for Apple to switch to AMD for this 4000 Generation But any chance further on down the line ? Considering how Intel’s CPUs just can not compete with AMD.

thank you

as a side note based on the 3990x 64 Core ThreadRipper 3 I’ve canceled my Mac Pro purchase indefinitely. We need to start some kind of hashtag or grassroots campaign to pressure Apple to go with AMD CPUs

when a $4,000 AMD CPU outperforms $20,000 Intel CPUs it’s time to act.

really hope they do bought AMD stock for $9.00 in late 2017 it’s now $50.00 if it cracks $60 a share I’m selling and retiring at 30.

None.

This is the first time AMD has beaten Intel in CPU in a long time - and this only after had multiple years of major stalls. Intel will catch up again.

Apple has a great relationship with Intel. And while they have a good relationship with AMD for GPUs, I sincerely doubt they'd mess with their great Intel relationship by dealing with AMD CPUs.

I find it far more likely that Apple will develop their own ARM-based laptop/desktop/workstation CPUs based on their iPhone/iPad A-series CPUs. As it stands now, the latest iPad Pro is faster than the MacBook Air at most CPU tasks!

I want to see benchmarks first. Don’t get me wrong, these CPUs are very impressive, but I tend to be sceprical about official marketing material.

While the A13 might be faster in benchmarks there is people where the MacBook Air is still a better device for them. So it matters little how much faster it is. The yeah they can put it inside but you run into comparability issues with apps.

Apple is clearly shots fired at Intel showing and claiming that the A12X in the IPad Pro is faster than the Core i5.

AMD just announced 7nm CPU chips coming out this year. Intel over a year behind.

Do you think Apple would ever put an AMD CPU in a Mac in the future?

With AMD's new 7nm 4000 series chips announced at CES2020 and shipping very very soon we may see some change in a year or so.

If we learned anything from the intEl switch ... it's about performance per watt & the roadmap years ahead vs the competition.

I actually watched the whole keynote presentation, and was very impressed. Better performance, lower power usage per cycle, lower TDP, and lower cost over the competition. If their single-thread, single-core performance is on par with Intel, i'd like the option for an AMD CPU in future Apple laptops.

64 cores for $3990... yes please!!

Whatever your preference, it's fantastic to see some real competition again.

Cheers

I wouldn't bet money on that. Intel has publicly stated they won't have anything to be competitive with AMD until 2023/2025 at the earliest. It takes years to develop a CPU design, and even though they have Jim Keller, he isn't a magician.
As strong as Apple's relationship with Intel is, Apple isn't going to accept Intel's issues and them being stuck on 14nm while everyone else will be on 5nm or 7nm++++ by years end.

If this were a small hiccup by Intel, where by in 1year or maybe 2 years it would be fixed, ok, but they won't have anything competitive on AMD's level for years. They won't even be on 7nm until late 2021 or early 2022.

It's anyone's guess what Apple will do, but I can't seem them using 14nm Intel chips in 2021, when AMD will be on 5nm next year.
