If you can work comfortably with windows it's a pretty sensible choice, from an economical stand point.
Also have in mind that the high end iMacs, in general, were always more expensive than bare hardware PCs and nowadays Apple is going the opposite route by raising up the prices (nMP, iMacs etc).

I'm a Senior Windows & Linux sysadmin so I work daily with all 3 platforms. I love OSX simplicity and the app ecosystem but I'm just tired of the premium price and the restrictions they impose. I prefer to have some control over what I pay and I know what I'm getting into. I already have a powerful Pc, in fact I have higher GeekBench score than the current i7 6700 in the current maximum iMac build. Next step is getting an ultrawide 34" wide monitor. I won't sell my rMBP, it will serve me a few years. I love reading on the retina screen.

:)

Not trying to start anything, but just out of curiosity, to what restrictions are you referring? Personally, I have never run into restrictions in OS X and I have been working with (and administering) all three major operating systems for the last ~18 years.

Same pointless threads as last year. Please stop splitting hairs: how many 27" retina with the 295 were sold since last year and how many with a defective GPU? I bet an insignificant %. It's going to be the same for the 395.
I own a fully loaded 27 Retina since October or maybe November 2014 and in the last 12 months, despite a lot of folks on this forum warning me it was going to burn down any moment, I did everything to the machine including long Warcraft hours. Ran every kind of software. My Mac is up and running as a charm. For anything else there is Apple Care.

(edit: I am obviously referring to a 5k imac)

I didn't mean software restrictions, more about hardware choice. For me the actual mini doesn't fit my requirements. The cheapest MacPro is slower than a iMac and that configuration cost too much for what it really is. The Imac is superb but to get an i7 QuadCore, you need to pay more than 3300$CDN + extra ram + 15% taxes. I'm not debating about if the Mac is worth it or not, that would be another subject.

But not being able to get a quad core machine for under that price is a restriction.

cheers

I thought the price was crazy until I tried pricing out 5K 27" monitors. The Dell is $2200 CDN. That softened the blow a bit for me.

Not really, no. Not on its own. It really depends on the developer and the code. Metal and DX12 CAN be used properly, but shaders can be written poorly just as any other part of the code. Meaning, if developers invest time and energy to make both a Metal and DX12 version of a game work properly, then yeah, the difference in FPS should be smaller. But whether developers will actually take the time to optimise a game for both platforms is questionable. Mac ports are often done by third party developers and we'll see if they use Metal the way it should be used. And from what I read, such low level coding requires some top level coding skills. Just remember that whole Batman Arkham Knight PC vs PS4/Xbox One fiasco and you can see how it all comes down to proper coding for each platform.

TLDR: Metal/DX12 won't do anything by themselves but will require some dedication from developers, so whether the FPS gap between Windows and OS X will be smaller remains to be seen.

Why should an game developer worry about making their games ready for Metal? Almost every person with an iMac that takes gaming a little tiny bit seriously boots to windows with bootcamp.

FYI, Microcenter usually has some awesome deals on LG 34" ultrawides. I picked up the 34UM95-P a while back brand new for $599

he was talking about nvidia gpu...the link shows us that apple could go with amd with the cpu...i still think Intel si above amd at cpu

I know. My comment was about that. I don't see Apple switching to Nvidia soon. (i wish)

I was checking that one until I saw people complaining about the bad uniformity & backlight bleeding.
The overall rating was still good on Amazon.com.

in 2016 and 2017 imac and macbook pro will come with nvidia. Apple always lately do 2 years contracts with amd and nvidia

Thats good news. Nvidia is making much better (mobile) cards. I am a little bit worried about AMD if they can handle that if they loose Apple. They have lost the battle in the CPU market. And they are not in the best place on the GPU market as well.

yes, the 980M and the upcoming 990M are beast.
I want that 990M in the next imac update even if it cost 500$ for BTO iMac

If the Nvidia is really coming to the iMac next year. Than I consider waiting instead to buy a new workhorse (PC)

seems to be better than GTX 980 but yes..and it suppose to be release late Oct or in November
