New framebuffer personalities in the latest build. Previously after new ones have showed up Apple released the corresponding GPUs in Macs within weeks. It's possible they are for an iMac, but I think it's more likely Apple would put these Big Navi GPUs in the Mac Pro.

It would be very plausible that they would do so, so I want to believe you :)))

The more I think about it now the Navi 21 GPUs may not be headed for the Mac Pro. I think Apple would choose Arcturus based compute oriented GPUs if they were intending to replace the high end Vega II GPUs. It's still possible, but as gaming focused GPUs, Navi 21 may be headed for a different Mac than the 7,1. That makes sense if high end Apple Silicon isn't ready yet; that they will continue to update Intel Macs on the higher end for the time being.

As long as they're coming to any mac that means there will be driver support. :) It looks like prices for the arcturus itself would be the price of an entire base mac pro or more..

The drivers should allow for off the shelf non-MPX versions. Keep an eye on that eGPU list. Applies to PCIe compatibility as well. Usually issues for first 3-6 months as OS versions update and drivers mature (hopefully).

Will caution, some on this thread have had tremendous issues in the past being early adopters of 5XXX GPUs, even with semi-polished drivers. Numerous threads troubleshooting issues related to GPU. If you’re looking for stability and polished experience, do NOT jump in to the 6XXX series early, even if drivers are present.

As first, consider that I'm not an expert.

Anyway, just for curiosity, I looked for the PCI id of the 6800/6800xt (not sure but probably the PCI ID is 0x73bf while AMD is 0x1002) and the name "Navi21" (if I understood well RX6800 and 6800 XT are "Navi 21") in /System/Library/Extensions and I found something:

MM2018-2:Extensions root# grep -IRi Navi21 *

Don't know if this means that they are working on it...

Bye,
Mr Hyde
Does this give us any indication? I have absolutely no clue about code like this... ? That's probably what was referred to before by @MisterAndrew ?

You were talking about this, right?

It would make sense for them to replace the Vega II Duo with this monster, same price but all the firepower packed in ONE Gpu... maybe we could still see a 6800 XT MPX replace the 5700?

I'm crazy on the fence of buying a Vega II at 24% discount on Amazon right now, just to have two of them that fit perfectly together and be done for now. An instinct is unaffordable for me.. a 6800 might be cool but only in MPX format cause I have two XDR displays and premiere only utilizes the display attached GPU ... so that's a big if. Not sure though if it makes sense to buy a VEGA II at this point.

Your Vega II isn't being utilized above 20% for PP editing as is; why would you need another one at this time? This is based on the data you posted in another thread. Is there another program you use that would tax both the Vega II and a 6800 XT?

Yea I’m trying hard to do as many jobs as possible in resolve because of how premiere behaves, and there I see the GPU on the absolute edge, to the point where the entire system becomes unresponsive during rendering, or stuttering playback during heavy noise reduction, that’s why...

Yeah I mean a GPU based on that chip. The Vega II is based on the Instinct MI60. So a Radeon Pro Arcturus for the Mac Pro would be based on the MI100. An Arcturus Duo would have two chips like the Vega II Duo. That's true the W5700X is based on a gaming oriented chip (Navi 10), so perhaps it does make sense for Apple to release GPUs for the Mac Pro based on Navi 21.

As a MPX module? Not really. There is no "video out" on that GPU die so the MPX connector would add what? Not reason to put discrete TB controllers on the card as there is no DPv1.4 to feed the TB controller. There is now DPv1.4 output to feed the other TB controllers either. It has video data processing chops in that the fixed function video decode is still present. (if Apple covers that with driver support).

If the two 8 pin aux connectors feed this thing power then call it a day and just write/enable the drivers for the card. That's the slipper slope danger. Is Apple going to sponsor/enable/ that work if they can't turn it into an MPX module? If Apple would out to enable the Mac Pro market to grow substantively larger going forward that would make sense. ( and Intel's "Server" Xe card that is targeting video decode/encode also if that isn't to big a reach for Intel/Apple drivers that exist. ) . However, I'm doubtful the market is more than "hobby project" for them so pretty good chance they won't. [ OpenCL , OneAPI , and/or ROCm stacks that is the primary target for these cards is path that Apple's "Metal only" future is relatively hostile to. So Apple's strategy somewhat poisons the well. ]

AMD may have have a variant of this with incrementally fewer CU cores on it where they didn't completely throw the video subsystem overboard. I suspect though if Apple was going to ask for a "custom" version it would be a tweak to "big navi" than than this.

Arcturus is basically a "Duo" with a single GPU package. Doubtful they would "Duo a Duo". The single M100 is 300W . Two 600W ... which busts the MPX connector limit anyway (not that the connector is adding tons of value if there is not display output here , nor discrete Thunderbolt present on the card). If downclocked more to get under the MPX limit then just kind of loosing here. ( MI100 isn't clock very high anyway in normal mode. )

Just getting to one would be a stretch. But a pairing of an MI100 and a future RNDA2 MPX module with a compatible Inifinity Link adapter between the too would have some very good synergies. The one MPX module with actual display output and then the other with a "back channel" link to the display for some more grunt computational work to get done. It wouldn't be completely symterical but Apple needs to get unstuck from the completely symetical bandwagon. (that is just a corner to paint themselves into. )

An MPX card with video out ... yeah some customize version of Navi 21.

We use Resolve for color grading only. No issues with the Vega II Duo keeping up with that workflow.

I ordered a second Vega II yesterday for this 24% discount on Amazon and will call it a day for now.
