Flogging a dead horse territory. The world doesn't need another tv streaming service, either at ground level or 30,000 ft. Why doesn't Apple put theirs Croesus-like cash wealth towards something actually original and beneficial to humankind for once, and pull the plug on this failed venture. They're always going to be a speck in the rear view mirrors of Netflix and Disney, no matter how desperate they are to play catch up. Jeez, to think they canned the EV project for dramas with Jennifer Aniston.

this would be the only time i would check out atv+ - for free on a flight
probably offer wont be around long enough until covid under control
amazon prime and disney+ is fine for me now

Wanna bet? They pay for it as a perk to fly American.
Why would AA pay for a "perk" that brings in absolutely zero additional revenue? Is anyone going suddenly decided to fly AA over United or Delta, just because they can watch The Morning Show? No.

.. or their customers can watch it for free. I suspect only TV+ subscribers can watch it just like with Apple Music, or AA paying for it with advertisings or something else.
In short, Apple will get paid any way.

They don't need that. Anyone can watch TV+ for free for a month if they have a device to watch it. If someone won’t have a device to watch it, to let them watch for free on AA would be futile since no one will go out to buy a device specially for TV+ anyway.
I bet it is just like most other in-flight entertainment that airlines have been moving to over the past few years. A couple of years ago, I was flying multiple times a week. There was always a selection of NBC shows I could watch for free. I suspect Apple is supplying a few episodes of their shows as well.

This is catch passengers who may not have heard of aTV+ or just haven't bothered to sign-up. They see a show with Jennifer Aniston and Reese Witherspoon (or Chris Evans) and decide to see what it is about. Apple hopes they get hooked and want to see more. I am sure that Apple makes it very clear how to subscribe.

Think of this an advertising expense for Apple..

If Apple supplys only a few episodes of shows then I‘d agree it will be what you said but if they supply all episodes then someone has to pay. Period. Whether it will be by AA itself, advertisings or some other schemes Someone will have to pay, otherwise it will be just like Apple Music on AA that the only subscribers can listen to.
Apple didn’t do advertising like this for Apple Music on AA why should this be different? It will not.

I rather read a book and have the seats next to me free than watching Apple TV+ and Covid-Mary there sitting next to me taking off her mask and spreading ahead. Not flying AA any time soon. Probably not UA either (where I am a 1K member). Delta seems more reasonable and I don't care if they offer Apple TV+, HBO or whatever.

I don't see what the big deal is about Apple TV+ on AA flights, whether it's free or not to AA. Apple TV+ will be get market exposure and probably gain more viewers. I doubt the Apple TV+ "free ride" will continue if a person buys an Apple product forever.

AA is almost certainly paying Apple to offer it as one of their free in-flight entertainment options (screen in the seat back), not just free streaming on a passenger's own device. It ups AA's entertainment options, and gives Apple some new exposure to people who might not otherwise have tried the service. Win win.

Don’t think they give it to AA for free.

I'm not sure. I suspect the value to Apple is higher than the value to American.
I've discovered multiple shows through seeing them on an airplane, and if the show is compelling enough you're then persuaded "hey, maybe it's worth subscribing to HBO Max [or Disney+ or Apple TV+ or whatever]".

I think you are making the frequent economist's mistake of assuming that everyone is (a) rational and (b) has all the time in the world. Plenty of people (including me) have not bothered to take up that TV+ (or Apple Music) free month offer because doing so becomes just one more thing that then has deadlines attached to it. I now HAVE TO experiment throughout this month to get value from my free month, to see everything it has to offer. And I have to be sure to cancel at the end of the month.
Much easier to just try an aTV+ show from one of the options available on the in-flight system.

You're also incorrect about assuming "no one will go out to buy a device specially for TV+ anyway".
Plenty of people already have smart TV's on which they could install the Apple TV app if they had a reason to do so. Even people without such a smart TV might have been vaguely considering "should I get an Apple TV box? see if it's useful to me?" and being given a small push to see the value it can offer helps with the purchase decision.

AA may be the only ones who actually pay for ATV+.

Millions of people do in fact.

You sound like a minority to me.

Most likely what‘s happening.
