Creemore, Sleeman's, Keith's, and so many amazing Canadian microbrews. I just haven't found anything that compares here.

Please.... for the love of all things beery.... give me some suggestions and I'll be happy to try them.

Cheers, eh.

Alexander Keith's FTW :D!

I think the problem many non-Americans have with American beers is that they think of Bud, Miller and Coors.

That would be the equivalent of assuming all European beer was Carling, Stella and Heineken or all Australian beer was Fosters (none of which are very good)...

I would take Carling, Stella or Heineken over Bud, Miller and Coors any day. Bud is acceptable, but Miller and Coors taste like piss gone bad.

Very few actually do – for example, one of my favourite beers is Deuchars IPA which is quite fantastic in both cask and bottled form, but an authentic IPA it most certainly isn't.

Well it really depends on what you're expecting. I guess that's why Alexander Keith's IPA is enjoyed by so many people, and yet if you were really looking forward to an IPA, you'd give me a look similar to the dog in my avatar. ;)

This is when websites like BeerAdvocate, which was linked to by someone in this thread, doesn't work. As an IPA, it'll get horrible marks by all the beer snobs and be ranked near the bottom, when in fact, it's really a decent beer (not particularly memorable, but definitely better than average).

Oh no no... we weren't talking about Cognac -- at least I wasn't. I was going on about Scotch Whisky which has been matured in ex-Cognac barrels.

I will resist the temptation to insert gratuitous Franco-slam insult here.:D pour encourager les autres, if nothing else.

I knew what you were talking about, my Southern friend!

I love Scotch, Scotchhy, Scotch-Scotch. :D

You're clearly a man of fine taste.

Rather thrillingly, a nearby big warehousey shop thingy has started selling packs of four bottles for a bargaintastic £3.95, so I reckon that's my Christmas ale supply sorted. ;)

Why thank you sir. I was paying roughly that much per pint...so I can appreciate the savings! :D

Bud is acceptable, but Miller and Coors taste like piss gone bad.

I'd actually flip that...I much prefer Miller and Coors to Bud, particularly in their respective 'light' forms (blasphemy! I know...). Bud tastes thick and greasy to me, not that that makes much sense...

American Beer?

Hmmm - on holiday there a couple of years ago - made the mistake of ordering Budweiser - uggh! Tastes like a really bad Aussie beer (looking at you Fosters).
Had Sam Adams Summer Ale (think that was the name) and loved it - thats all I drank the rest of my stay - wish I could get it here in Oz.
Also something by Brooklyn Brewing - can't remember what it was, but it was also good.

I've heard several people on this thread bagging Fosters as a bad beer - as an Aussie, I have to say I have never seen Fosters for sale in Australia (at least in the liquor stores I frequent)- I think we realise it is so bad that even we won't drink it.

I've had a good laugh about that in the past few weeks....I've traveled around Europe some and stayed in hostels, where I always seemed to meet Aussies, all of whom said the exact same thing. To the rest of the world Fosters is Australia. Hell, their commercials in the states say "Fosters: Australian for beer."

I hate it, I'll stick with Canadian (mainly Quebecois) beer!

For domestic, I still stick to Canadian beer, usually stuff like Sleeman ie Honey Brown, India Pale Ale or Original Draught, Alexander Keith's, Moosehead or Kokanee. If I'm spoiling myself, I drink Unibroue, usually either Maudite, La fin du Monde or Trois Pistoles.

Ugh.. I could not stand La Fin......

Love a good ole fashion, pale ale, stone brewery has a good one. Firestone double barrel ale. Tasty. If you are down south, haven't found one here yet, Bare Knuckle Ale, great little beer. One of my favorite combo's is Guinness and Sam Adams Oktoberfest. Tasty.

But once again I come back to pretty much anything Stone Brewery puts out.

I have never seen Fosters available at a pub, except at a pub beside a backpackers in Sydney. It was pretty much available for the British and American backpackers who were all so happy to see an Australian beer. ;)

Otherwise, never seen it. I think I've seen a rarer beer like Leffe Blonde available at a pub more than once, and Leffe isn't exactly a beer you can get anywhere.

You'd have a better chance of being attacked by "drop bears" than find Fosters being served. :p

lol drop bears... i ve heard lots of stories about those... I've always wanted to try fostrs for some reason never gotten the chance to

then again, I've had bad Guinness (once), which was surprising considering how I was living in England, which is well closer to the source than, say, Canada.
There are Guinness breweries all over the world, so it's not necessarily closer to the source. That depends on what part of Canada you're in.
Hmmm...only American beers I really enjoy are Sierra Nevada Pale Ale, Pyramid Hefeweizen and a few Sam Adams beers (Summer Ale & Boston Lager).

My friend's father made a Sam Summer clone. It was 9%. Unfortunately, it doesn't last very long, so I haven't had a chance to try it yet. :(

I agree I love my Sod (Sleeman original draught), and kokanne is pretty great too..

Yeah Kokanee :D. Go BC! :)

I saw Tooheys, XXXX and VB more often than Fosters when I went to Australia.

I don't know what it is with those companies, but their "light" versions all suck crap. However, to me, Bud have less of that sour taste like Coors or Miller that makes it taste like... piss gone bad :p.

The one is very local is called ABA for short... Linky..

~Shard~ : You should like the ABA since your excellent doing your MR job .. ;)

Cool, it's the beer made for me! :D Where can I find said potent potable? Let me know - if I'm ever in the neighborhood we'll have to meet up for a pint. ;)

Oh, and what kind of MacRumors Bastard™ would I be if I didn't point out that it should be "since you're excellent doing your MR job"... :p :D

I went on the Samuel Adams brewery tour whilst in Boston........ i have had Sam Adams while in the USA and it's not fantastic but it has to be the best of the American beers.

One thing that really put me off the Sam Adams beers though is how jumped up the people were at the brewery and were really 'dissing European beers, hated it.... got to try some at the end, they squeeze you into a room where all the alcoholic tour guides drink out of massive glasses..... not bad for a small donation to get it!!

I like Rogue Dead Guy Ale, Fin du Monde, Trois Pistoles, Columbus Pale Ale, Bell's Two Hearted Ale, etc etc.

There are plenty of Good American beers! You just have to know where to look ;-)

For clarification, Fin du Monde, and Trois Pistoles are of course Canadian beers - and great ones at that! :D
