Old thread, but I wanted to share:

My iPhone 5 sleep button finally broke completely today for me and it is just outside the one year warranty. I filed an Amex extended warranty claim.

I was told to get a repair estimate and was planning to go do that tomorrow. I never sent receipt or repair quote in and I open my email tonight and was told my claim was closed.

They refunded full purchase price of 313.00 and there was no request to send my iPhone 5 in.

I really want the 5s and might sell my 5 and take the claim money to buy the 5s. It sounds like fraud, but why not take a claim and decide not to use it.

Another positive experience here. Called and opened a claim for my iPhone5 which just DIED. I was told to sit tight and wait for up to 6 business days to hear from someone. If I wanted to go ahead and replace it or repair it before then, that was fine - but to keep the paperwork obviously and knowing that there wasn't a guarantee the claim would be approved. IOW, there was no documentation to send in ...unless they decided they needed it.

Well, I just opened up my statement and found a credit for the FULL value of the purchase. Sweet! I had ended up swapping the phone for a 'new' unit at the Apple Store ($269) a few days ago anyways, because I was fairly confident the claim was going to be approved. Plus, I really had no other alternative. It was confirmed unrepairable by an independent store and the Apple Store - and I had the documentation to send in, if needed. But they never asked!

Thumbs up for AMEX.
