I'm quite sure Steve Jobs wasn't the nicest of people to work for (or against), however had he have been alive today (and in good health), I'm sure I wouldn't be walking around with a Samsung Galaxy in my pocket (after 6 previous years iPhone ownership) .... nor thinking most of the rest of Apples range is staid and lacks the original spark it once had!!!!

thats because it's all in your head.

I agree that Vista and W7 were nothing special and W8 isn't even worthy of a mention, but how is XP the greatest OS ever made? I'm only speaking here of Windows (because it certainly wasn't as good as the Mac OS) and for XP to be considered the best Windows OS it would have to have good security and it had the WORST security. Hole after hole. In terms of operability, yeah, I guess it worked okay but that doesn't say much as Windows has never been on the top 10 of well made products but oh well.

Hmmm you should see this thread right here on Macrumors:

https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/1400095/

Many have XP as the top or in the top 10.

Once SP2 was released, XP security was good because Microsoft made some under-the-hood changes to the kernel.

Wow, I hadn't expected this, but it made me really sad to watch this. Strange to miss a person you didn't really know.

I have zero respect for the slime-ball known as Bill Gates. He taxed the computer industry by charging for a copy of Windows to every PC sold even if it didn't run Windows but ran Unix or Linux, if the seller refused the deal they would have to pay the exuberant price of a standard Windows OS for their Windows units, would take them out of business. He used Office and Windows to kill competition, and to marginalize the Mac platform.

He copied Netscape, ruined the browser playing field, and purposefully worked against browser standards in an effort to make other browsers incompatible with the monopoly of IE (95+% of the browser market). Attempted to kill QuickTime, JAVA (Which was an idea beyond what it is today), and many other technologies.

The DOJ case against MS of the 90's was to consolidate the hundreds of bad business practices suits brought against MS into a single lump-sum, in the end MS got a slap on the wrist and were to continue doing whatever they were doing. The US Gov in return got backdoor access to any Windows machine worldwide, this was evident with the three Windows NT backdoor entrances found in one of the Service Packs. It wasn't until SJ came back and made Microsoft look outdated and obsolete, yet still Bill Slime-Ball Gates was attempting to take credit for Apple's technologies like the iPad.

His efforts for helping the world, is for Tax purposes, if you think it's because he's a nice guy, you probably don't know a super-rich person. If Gates wanted, Africa would've started to turn around a decade ago.

Yeah Gates could have just changed a whole continent no problem on his own. *Sarcasm*

Agreed.

If you respected Steve and what he has done for technology, then you have to respect Bill Gates for the same thing (and vice versa). Their visions of the future were [are] a little different, but attaining their goals often required a symbiotic approach.

Forget the corporations, forget the character flaws, dodgy deals and mistakes along the way. We needed both men, in equal measure to be where we are today.

Right. Both sides contributed to the industry and moved us all forward. I don't subscribe to the wars that many do, such as Apple vs Microsoft, Ford vs Chevrolet or Coca Cola vs Pepsi. I buy and drink what I like and hope that you do too, even if it's different from my choice. I don't like all the silliness.

So yes, they both did well in their particular businesses and we're all better for it.

While I am bound to get bashed by everyone here, I must still state the obvious....

Bill Gates' business accomplishments equal or in my opinion far surpass Steve Jobs. Apple's rise came about as a result of an iPod, iPhone, and iPad and it came in a matter of a few years. It happened fast and has fluttered a bit. I am not saying Macintosh hasn't been around but if you are truthful you will know and state that Macintosh sales blew up as a result of the iPod and iPhone....

Microsoft has been on the top of their market for decades. Apple's longevity as a major player is still being written.

As far as comparing SJ and BG outside of their business accomplishment, Steve loses that comparison by a mile and then some. This is the character of a person in my opinion.

Let the bashing begin... :)

volumes

.
It speaks volumes that in his last days, Steve was still mainly concerned with his expensive boat. Meanwhile, Bill Gates wants to give most of what he made to better humanity.

Two very different personalities for sure.

:apple:

This interview chokes me up.

Bill Gates has grown up so much from that jerky little kid who wanted to rule the world. He's doing things beyond him now, beyond Microsoft... he's helping people. He's helping save the world. You just can't deny that we are all lucky to have him on this earth.

As for Steve Jobs, it makes me really miss him. He died too young and I know he still had so much more to do. He wasn't finished. He hadn't gotten to the place Bill Gates is at now, but you can tell that he wanted to be there someday. He envied Bill for figuring it out sooner than he did.

These two hated each other for so long, but then at some point they realized that they both belonged to the same thing... one was the right arm, one was the left. It's hard to live the same way when you lose one. And you can tell they started to realize it towards the end.

Bill Gates genuinely misses Steve Jobs and wishes he was still alive. And if the positions were reversed, Jobs would have felt the same way about Bill.

That was a disgusting puff piece on Gates by 60 minutes.
Praising him to heavens while ignoring the fact that he is promoting Monsanto toxic GMOs all over the world while owning 500,000 shares.
He will be responsible for more disease and death than saving people from polio.
The man is pondscum

Take your blinders off and look at what Apple does... LOL. EXACTLY THE SAME CRAP on even a bigger scale...

and criticizing what he is doing in Africa is unfortunate. No one by him knows his motivations and even if he is doing it for tax purposes, your point is???? How much did Mr. Jobs do?

The first part of your statement is just stupid. Business is business. And he was good at it. Obviously you didn't like it so you bought an Apple product.... but 90% of the rest of the world didn't care enough. Get over it.

Secondly, if you think he's doing his philanthropy because of tax purposes, YOU really don't understand the wealth of Bill Gates. You think he cares about taxes? He has BILLIONS of dollars. He has everything he ever wanted. Taxes? HA! WHAT A JOKE! Here in Washington State, where I live (I am 5 minutes from MS), he was FOR taxing the rich over $500k when the initiative was up for a vote. You know... he actually does care about people living. I'm sorry you have a hard time believing that.

But every time I drive by the Space Needle and see the huge Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation with employees in there helping people live DAILY, I know it's NOT a joke for taxes.

GET OVER YOURSELF.

It's clear from this and their other interviews that Steve and Bill shared a mutual admiration and respect for one another born out of their shared journey on that long and winding road we call life.

PS Shame on those people trying to turn this into yet another cat fight.

Bill Gates is a very accomplished, successful person that not only will leave behind a great legacy of computers in business and the private sector, but also in the world of medicine, philanthropy and generosity.

Gates truly cares about mankind and the future all across the globe. There's a lot to be said for that. His level of maturity, intellect, and class exceeds that of many of Silicon Valley's CEO's.

Would someone be kind enough to transcript the sentence that is difficult to catch for non us native and for me at least, ie what Steve said between 3:30 and 3.45 in the video, "You now I think.... that's clearly true here".

Many thanks.

So sad that all of you are falling for this without actually researching what Gates is up to.
He is in bed with the most evil company on the face of this earth and knows exactly what they are up to.
The Gates Foundation is a Monsanto front company, the other things they do tries to hide that fact.

Hmm...what exactly would Steve have done to keep you from going to Samsung?

Man, I miss Steve.

Same here - and not to be a Debbie Downer, but CBS seems to be a little too sensationalist here.

At least during the "emotional" part about SJ, Gates doesn't seem to change his facial expression even a tiny bit. His eyelids were just as pink-colored as they usually are for someone wearing glasses and working long hours.

Both of them shared, of course, unique moments in life as innovators/corporate behemoths. But no, Gates is NOT crying there.

It's a quote from a Beatles song:

"You and I have memories longer than the road that stretches out ahead"

I just finished reading Steve's biography yesterday. It's amazing how the loss of someone you never new personally can bring tears to your eyes.

Indeed. But the reason is simple: he made a difference on the basis of consistent principles.

Anyone here with a way to see this video outside of the US??

I am doing it from Switzerland - just the excerpt, though...not the whole thing.
