Its a HDMI handshake problem. I had this months ago and found a cure.
I did these things 1. Unplug the hdmi cables. First tv then apple tv 2. Unplug the TV power and the AppleTV power, let them sit 30-60 seconds, 3. Plug in hdmi cables while power is off 4. plug the tv power in first, then the ATV power. This worked for me! (I was told it's an HDCP Handshake error, and the handshake is forced to be done again by unplugging power, but make sure you unplug both devices and plug them in the order above).

this solved my problem instantly!
I should of known this problem was down to hdmi and it's drm handshake nonsense
I can see exactly why steve jobs hasn't put bluray or hdmi on macs

For me I just unpluged the hdmi from the tv while atv2 was running. Then pulled out power lead from atv 2. Plugged back in power lead and plugged hdmi back into tv

At least my faith in apple has been restored as this hdmi drm business is entirely out of their hands. Apple products should just work

There's more to this issue than an HDMI handshake issue. I tried that but still no joy and it doesn't explain why other rented movies play fine and not others. I contacted Apple support and they reimbursed my money and removed the film from my device. Something else must be happening here. The only thing I can think that I did the same on both of my failed films is that I used my iPhone to control my ATV via the Remote App. This is linked to one particular account and I purchased movies logged in under different accounts on the ATV. Surely it couldn't be that? That's the only thing I can think of however.

This fixed things for me too. In my case i am not purchasing or renting though, just streaming stuff i already have.

I set up my new apple tv2 last night and was able to stream music and movies from my main itunes library no problem. When i woke up this morning all music returned "Error occurred loading this content" and was quite bummed.. prepared for a morning nightmare to come, i decided to try the handshake fix above first as it seemed reasonable in my fairly new (just out of the box) situation and i was able to load content normally. whew.. and Thank You!

This is still happening to me and I'm getting really sick of having to contact Apple all of the time to get the faulty movie removed from my account and my money reimbursed. It's definitely an issue their end as I can rent movies successfully on the same night that I have had failed ones. I can always tell when one is going to fail too as there is a brief sound made through my speakers which kind of sounds like when you remove a headphone jack from something when the speakers are on. Guaranteed it will then come up with the dreaded error. It's really frustrating and is spoiling what is an otherwise great product.

Anyone with an Apple TV 2 willing to try a movie that I have had fail to see if it does for them too?

The one I tried last night on two separate iTunes accounts was "I Saw The Devil".

HDMI/Power Cycle worked for me

I experienced the error message "An error occurred loading this content. Try again later" while trying to play a movie over Home Sharing from a MBP over my wifi LAN. I did not see the error when I tried to play music the same way, music worked.

As instructed above I unplugged the Apple TV 2 HDMI, then its power, then the TV HDMI, then TV power. Waited 10 seconds, plugged them back in following reverse order (TV power to Apple TV 2 HDMI).

After Apple TV started back up, the first movie worked, as did the second. I'm now 9 minutes into the second and playback has gone quite smoothly. It's almost Christmas at the Nakatomi Towers!

I just got this error with the latest software update (seemed fine before that, but I hadn't used it much as it's in the exercise room; I'm using Gen1 ATVs (which never have any issues here) in my living and home theater rooms.

It did the error with both my own content AND Netflix. It starts to play a few seconds and then instantly gives the error. A reboot seems to fix it. On the previous software update, it would just lose connection with home sharing and I'd have to restart iTunes (but Internet stuff still worked). With the latest update, the connection to iTunes works after several days sleep (i.e. I can browse my library and it reports a working connection), but if you try to play something, it gives the 'try again later' BS. Lovely product. No wonder I still use Gen1 ATVs.

What REALLY amazes me is how they still didn't include an obvious (rather than hidden remote combo) RESET option and button the unit. It would be so much simpler than having to unplug the darn thing and/or pray the remote combo works. It's Apple's ego that it should NEVER need a reset, but it's total BS. I've had to do it SO many times over the past few years I lost count.

I got a Apple TV (3rd gen) today. It worked fine up until now, I keep receiving the message every time I try to stream a tv show or movie:

"An error occurred loading this content. Please try again later."

I've tried the following with no luck...

- Holding menu + down on the remote.
- Unplugged the HDMI and power cables on the Apple TV and my LCD TV.
- Changed the HDMI cable.
- Reset the settings

Now I just restored it and going through the LONG process of setting it all up again. I have a feeling though the message will come back again in time. This is really unacceptable... :(

EDIT: I just restored and and I'm still getting the same error message!!

EDIT 2: WEIRD FIX -- Someone in this discussion tried changing their DNS settings on the Apple TV and it fixed the issue. I used Google's DNS 8.8.8.8 and now I can stream movies/tv shows. By the way I have Comcast, not sure if other people having the same issue are using the same ISP...

I have had the same problem with one of atvs. I've tried wired and wireless connection, restored atv many times. My other atv and I got a roku and never have problems with them. I think this unit is defective. I have to reboot every time to fix the issue. This is vary annoying.

Did you try changing the DNS on the ATV?
