I guess I'm lucky, I've done all kinds of "terminal hacks/tweaks" and run a bunch of "tweak apps" (better touch tool, total finder, hyperdock, coolbook[and I'm running very low voltages], probably more but those are what I can think of; all of which I use the beta/alpha if available), download 10.6.X updates as soon as they're seeded to devs, use beta/alpha versions of apps if available, blah blah. And everything just works, I can honestly say I've never had an issue that was "worse" than say Chrome Canary not closing properly and needed to force quit; no kernel panics or anything. I shut it down each night, and when it's sleeping during the day just open the lid and everything instantly works. I really couldn't be happier with my MacBook.

man I have, EVERY clean install, had my computer go crazy from just installing different services or open source project apps needed for other apps to organize other apps. I use onyx to keep things clean when I get gigs moving about but... man it's like a guarantee. I'm replacing my HDD as it has problems and I'm hoping those are it.

What is your voltage on the CPU? Are there any free alternatives to cookbook?

Edit: They don't support i5/i7? What gives?

Two cooling mods for you...

So.. my optical drive on my MBP is iffy. I have heat problems and an 8600m that doesn't like heat.

solution? take out drive, plug in fan to suck air in through the optical slot (remove the fuzz stuff).

ideas? work? what kind of fan can I get?

Here are two solutions I did as a cooling mod for those view times I run games on my MBP.

#1

In the PC modding world, there are great cooling mods out there, also for laptop gamers. A view years ago I bought a Black Aluminum Laptop stand up from Cooler Master with two fans in it. (NotePal).
Those models have even improved and are great for getting heat off your hot laptop.

#2

The top left corner of my MBP is really a very hot area, once Starcraft 2 is in full swing, especially on my external apple cinema display. I always lay a flat aluminum heat sink on the hot corner to keep the heat as low as possible. Unfortunately it would not stay in place and slide down, so I have to put a little matchbox on it to prevent sliding down.
Simple but very effective. Look for a aluminum heat sink at your local electronic store or the internet.

That sucks, I guess I am just lucky? I use packages and whatnot to patch stuff and blah blah too, hopefully it is your hard drive. I never really had any horrible problems with Windoze(more on my HP dv2000 than on my ThinkPads, but even 7 on the HP was pretty slick), but my Mac has been flawless on the software side. Same goes for my girlfriends 7,1 2.66GHz, and I have her running betas of a lot of software and tweaks/patches, and I know she doesn't run into problems because it's not like she could fix something if there was a problem, she doesn't even run software updates. Yes, I could easily teach her, but this way she has to keep me around. lol

I don't think there are any free versions of CoolBook, I use the google before I bought it and couldn't find anything. I figured even a junky USB cooling pad would be at least $25, and knew I wouldn't get any results from said cooling pad, so $10 was a steal(look at it as a hardware cost). It does suck he hasn't updated it for iX processors, maybe turbo boost or something won't allow it? I don't know of any way to do it on an iX, but maybe someone that knows more than me knows how to do it through terminal or something? I admit to taking the easy way when possible, like using candybar/LiteIcon to change icons and other apps to mess with my dock.

I don't have my MBP with me so I can't post a screenshot, but I want to say at my highest clock (2.4GHz) I'm running 0.9250 volts, compared to 1.1000 stock; I have them set a bit higher when plugged into AC, since power draw doesn't matter then, but I use iStatPro to kick the min fan speed up to 2250 just to make me feel better although I know it isn't necessary. When I get home I'll post up a shot of the controller open showing all clocks/voltages.

So any ideas on what to do with optical drive cables? Gonna change HDD today and if I can't remove the cables I guess optical stays in...

Nvrmind. It all comes out nice

Post surgery experiences:

I took the DVD drive out easy enough (the cables came out with it).

1)st problem was that the locks in the front of the case wouldn't lock. I think they need the drive there.
2)didn't notice anything cooler - this is also because my HDD is 7200RP now not 5400.
3)can't install bootcamp using USB or "target disc mode" drive sharing.
4)reinstalled the finiky optical and works fine.

Conclusion - I still think it would be GREAT to remove the drive, put some air holes where the optical used to be, cover em up with a mesh and position one of the fans on this guy - http://www.amazon.com/Cooler-Master-Notepal-Notebook-R9-NBC-8PBK-GP/dp/B002NU5V4A - right under said holes.

but the world may never know 0.o
