The camera cutout clearly indicates this keyboard is for that updated iPad Pro and future iPad Pro. Mine would look quite awkward if applied to it, assuming the 2018 iPad Pro is compatible.

Guess I will consider this keyboard when my current iPad Pro need upgrade.

Doesn't look bad at all, with the "old" iPad. You should consider it now, unless you update before you actually need to.

missing: R&D, software, service, transport, profit margin, and design costs.
Haha. Yeah i think people believe they just draw a design on a napkin, press a button and it comes out of a factory the very next day in thousands of boxes! The intellectual property of a product is often what cost the most, and then there’s also convincing you to buy it (marketing) that adds to the cost of the final thing.

thats why Apple went mad at google for android and Jobs wouldnt let it go. Someone spends millions of dollars working out how to make something the best way possible and then another company just copies all the hardwork for zero cost and comes out with something cheaper cos they didn’t have to think about it! Then everyone thinks the cheaper company are hero’s figniting for the working man instead of what they really are, cheats and thieves!

Interesting x-ray. Its really designed for those who don't want to use a protective case on their iPad. I would purchase this if Apple could of designed this to allow iPads with a protective case. Using a $2000 iPad without no case is big no-no, so its the deal breaker.

Now I feel like I underpaid for the keyboard, is there anyway I can send a check to Apple?

I don’t feel awkward using a 2018 iPad Pro and I don’t usually stare at the back of my iPad all day

iPad Pro 2018 can definitely holds up another few years down the line and I have Apple Smart Keyboard Folio. So I personally don’t need this new magic keyboard right now just for backlight and maybe a bit better typing experience.

The Smart Keyboard folio was IMO a terrible typing experience, maybe the worst I’ve experienced. The magic keyboard is on par with MacBook Pro keyboard, maybe more than “a bit better”

How to forward-delete on this keyboard? The fn got replaced by the globe... Nice xray scan BTW.

So... are you guys still going to complain about the price?

Compared with price certain silly wheel price, this keyboard make sense. Maybe iFixit team & Creative Electron should give a go scanning that 700$ wheels to justify it price, maybe it have hidden gem inside.

Interesting. I might give it a shot if I get the chance.

I want my ipad not to be a laptop so ill never use this, its a tablet not a laptop, my misses has a new windows touchscreen laptop and im in love with it being touchscreen, time to make my £4000 macbook have one its not right, now they have made the ipad a laptop make the mac touchscreen
Personally, the trackpad on a Mac is a far better touch experience than reaching across the keyboard and touching the screen. Probably not the case with windows because they never got trackpads right If it’s a similar or better on the ipad, it will be awesome

but if you like windows and windows laptops, get one. I think the windowsUI was designed by kindergarten kids using a box of crayons, and I’m tired of the crashes, security issues and convoluted update process. Since switching to Mac, I get more done, have less frustration and downtime. So each to their own I guess. You go windows, I’m staying Mac and iPad!

Kindof off topic. I’d love to see all the third party wheels that are just as good and cheaper. I have no need for Xeon computers, so commenting on the price vs competitors would be uninformed

If that’s true, there will be 1-3 products with every single feature, and with *all* the complexity we see here, on the market before Fall. They’ll be priced under $150 while enjoying healthy margins.

But of course that won’t happen, because you pulled that number out of your lower orifice.

Remember that Apple generally shoots for 35-40% margins. They‘re not shy of over-engineering and making the customer pay for it. But they generally don’t command 400% margins (On items costing more than $50, anyway.)

That’s correct. Except for the 40,000% margins on the $700 wheels.

I wish they hadn’t rotated the X-ray image. For one heart-stopping moment I thought the cursor keys were on the left 😳
They inverted it so the apple would be correct (I'm guessing).

It's an X-ray. You are seeing through the image. There is no such thing as "on top" or "behind".

Flip it R to L yourself and it will be top-down as you desire.

I think this is completely on topic.

How can they call this a magic keyboard when it doesn't even have wheels!

Anyone else notice that loose bundle of wires coming from the USB-C port? Those look so hilariously un-managed

but for that money and engineering it should fold in every way, what about if i wanna use it as a drawing mode as thats what an ipad is mainly made for, or if i wanna move the angle for bed viewing, its terrible it only works as a laptop mode, not cool

Removing the iPad Pro from the keyboard is not difficult in the least and takes all of 1 second.

I had a 2018 12.9 iPad Pro with a Smart Keyboard. After purchasing the magic keyboard, there is no way I would go back. This has probably extended the life of the iPad Pro by another 3 years for me.

This is the single coolest thing to come out of Apple in a while.

The iPad is now officially a tablet-first 2-in-1 laptop, should you want it to be.

I think the price is right for what you get: the magnetic connection, the weighted base, the fact the iPad "floats", the back-lit keyboard, the Apple-class trackpad, pass-thru charging, the reasonable laptop-like combined weight... what's not to like here??

Just buying a silver, non-backlit standalone Magic Keyboard + a silver Magic Trackpad 2 + an iPad Smart Folio (12.9) will run you $329. $20 gets you all that in a single package and more.

That said, I'll wait for version 2, where hopefully they add the 3 things I think this is missing:

1. A front detent so you can set the iPad in front of the keyboard for draft-table-like drawing.
2. A row of function keys.
3. A better storage place for the Pencil (next to the hinge, inside when closed).
Bonus: A better material than that plastic.

That magnet is PRETTY STRONG. It never feels like the iPad could fall out, and the iPad looks very protected to me. The Magic Keyboard is way thicker than the old keyboard case. For the 12.9” model, the case is actually heavier than the iPad itself! That’s how thick, sturdy and bulky it is.
