I think Apple has an interesting take on the iPad-as-computer concept.

While many will point out that the cost of a decent iPad plus a magic keyboard costs about the same or nearly as much as a decent MacBook Pro, by developing a great tablet and a great keyboard separately, it hits a Market that a notebook doesn’t and one a thlet doesn’t for less.

Need only a tablet? iPad

Need a laptop. MacBook

Need a laptop occasionally but you already own an iPad: just add magic keyboard for $300

It can save some people some money.

If you need MacOS, well then the answer is obvious. But soon a MacBook ARM might solve that.

Isn’t a MacBook ARM just going to be an iPad with a keyboard? Hmmmmm...

The camera cutout clearly indicates this keyboard is for that updated iPad Pro and future iPad Pro. Mine would look quite awkward if applied to it, assuming the 2018 iPad Pro is compatible.

Guess I will consider this keyboard when my current iPad Pro need upgrade.
It works just fine with my 2018 iPad Pro (11").

iPad Pro 2018 can definitely holds up another few years down the line and I have Apple Smart Keyboard Folio. So I personally don’t need this new magic keyboard right now just for backlight and maybe a bit better typing experience.
For me the trackpad is a game-changer.

It looks just fine. Honestly, it’s hard to notice the camera cut out on my 2018 since it’s Space Gray against the dark gray case color. I say get it now, don’t wait. I have both the Smart Keyboard Folio and the Magic Keyboard and I think between the much better keyboard, trackpad, backlighting, ergonomics, and USB-C charging port, the Magic Keyboard is easily worth $150 more than the Smart Keyboard Folio. YMMV.

Another to me is the lack of physical escape key which I find it very annoying when trying to quit spotlight search. It seems that pressing the cmd+space again doesn’t quit spotlight.

My iPad Pro is 11”, which means right hand side keys like shift and some symbol keys are squished. I doubt the new magic keyboard makes every key more even in size. On 12.9” iPad Pro, all keys are the more standard sizes, making typing experience noticeably better imo.

Oh, Smart Keyboard folio is water resistant.

So, I am willing to sacrifice the current typing experience in exchange for a future 12.9” iPad Pro upgrade, then I will consider getting one of that magic keyboard.
