Basic math using the icons in the invitation solves this little riddle:

4 (calendar) + 10 (time) - (2+8+0)(map) + 1 (iMessage) = 5 (iphone 5).

Done.

:p

Noway just wait until 4th Oct....defenitly we'll see two iPhones!!!

Explanation why...?

When apple release their iPhone 4 (antenna issue) lots of blah blah ...

"you are not holding it right way"

even we started thinking maybe they are gonna recall iPhone 4.
So, keep all that in mind.....it's time to show apple about their innovation, a whole new design iPhone 5 new IOS5 and iPhone 4G with new antena and A5 chip.

Another aspect that makes it mysterious is that since its the iPhone event, they put a phone icon up, and what else would you have put that better says iPhone than the phone icon? And if you want it to also bring up new notifications (a selling point) you would put a 1 there.

Alternately you could have the message icon with a notification number on it but it would not quite say phone as much as the phone icon with a notification number.

So I think it may be arbitrary.

I really think apple will sell this as an all new iphone 5 and oh btw we upgraded the 4 a bit for all you on a budget. the iphone 4 as we know it know will cease to be sold IMO.

The 4s will be an afterthought and the 5 is what this event is all about.

Each icon has an extremely clear and in no way hidden message.

The calendar icon tells us the date of the event.
The clock tells us the time of the event.
The Maps icon tells us where the event is (yes, the icon has a real highway and street layout on it...of the Apple campus in Cupertino).
The phone icon tells us they have a message for us.

That's it.

You forgot the most obvious part of the invitation, the part that says "Let talk iPhone", what could that mean?

Usually when someone says

"LETS TALK"

its a bad thing. Like here, sit down for a second; we need to talk...

...we only have 1 phone for now... and... its only the 4S...

Steve Jobs calling to ask for his job back??? Could be anything really guys, probably Apple just playing mind games with us because they knew we'd all start conspiracies!

Let's talk iPhone could be a nod to the Assistant program 9to5 reported about. "Talking" to the iPhone.

: shrug : Just a stab.

If this is all about the iPhone, I wonder what this means for the iPod!

No more iPhone 3G(s)
No more iPhone 4 many carriers starting offer $99
Or iPhone 4 only 8GB

New iPhone 4G 16GB
New iPhone 5 16,32 & 64 GB

Apple know business - profit only profit.

The 1 badge has nothing to do with there being just one iPhone. They want everyone to think that this is the case so that when the true 5 is introduced, people will be even more excited about it because their expectations were lower.

This is what the phone icon with badge will end up meaning:

They do the presentation, introduce the iPhone 5 and the 4S. At the end, just before they are about to wrap up, everyone will hear the new voicemail alert sound. Whoever is presenting will play the voicemail, and it will be a quick recording from Jobs saying 'Just wanted to remind you to tell them about the amazing new Assistant feature'.

Genius !!!

I would bet that all it has to do with is the iOS5 notification revamp.

No, it has to do with the fact that since the dawn of iPhone time, a 1 on the phone icon means someone has a message for you (or you missed a call).

John Gruber is hinting that the icon in the invite is a sign that we are getting one iPhone. His words....

"Something tells me there’s only one new iPhone."

Look, I'm fully prepared for a 5th generation iPhone that looks almost identical to the iP4. Fine. So be it. But that's also incredibly disappointing. I won't start bitching until the keynote is over.

An Invitation and people here are jumping like Kids on Christmas. Seriously people, it's Apple. Always Simple. Icons gave Date, Time, Location and 'a notification' to the Invited Person. Also, "Let's talk iPhone" is pure and simple as "Let's talk Business". Jeez.

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 4_3_3 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/533.17.9 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/5.0.2 Mobile/8J2 Safari/6533.18.5)

What about the new notifications that are going to be on iOS 5?

Mystery solved. Gruber is right 100% of the time.

1

Year 1 (I) was a common year starting on Saturday or Sunday (link will display the full calendar) of the Julian calendar (the sources differ, see leap year error for further information) and a common year starting on Saturday of the Proleptic Julian calendar. At the time, it was known as the Year of the Consulship of Caesar and Paullus (or, less frequently, year 754 Ab urbe condita). The denomination 1 for this year has been used since the early medieval period, when the Anno Domini calendar era became the prevalent method in Europe for naming years. It was the first year of the Christian/Common era. The preceding year is 1 BC in the widely used Julian calendar, which does not have a "year zero".

Well, my point is more that Gruber tends to be a good source. Doesn't mean he's right, but sometimes he knows a lot more than what he lets on. We'll see in 7 days.
