apple would look stupid if they waited 16 months to release a slightly upgraded iphone 4.

Personally i think all these "4s" photos and accounts we've seen have just been test devices for the 5 hidden in 4 cases. much like how car manufacturers will put the old body on a new platform during testing, to try to hide what they're up to. The iphone 4 testing fiasco probably led apple to do this.

CDMA iPhone 4 was launched on January and white iPhone 4 on April. If they had launched iPhone 5 on June, people could have been very, very angry. That's the first thing I thought when no iPhone was presented at WWDC 2011.

Anyway, I really hope a big upgrade is coming out.

Basic math using the icons in the invitation solves this little riddle:

4 (calendar) + 10 (time) - (2+8+0)(map) + 1 (iMessage) = 5 (iphone 5).

Done.

:p

I'll be returning to this thread next week if you are somehow are right :D

Pretty sure there is an iPhone 5. No reason in releasing a 4S when the white iPhone 4 came out this year already. That would mean they released 3 different versions of basically the same phone.

Each icon has an extremely clear and in no way hidden message.

The calendar icon tells us the date of the event.
The clock tells us the time of the event.
The Maps icon tells us where the event is (yes, the icon has a real highway and street layout on it...of the Apple campus in Cupertino).
The phone icon tells us they have a message for us.

That's it.

I think you nailed it. Thread over... for the sane at least.

There isn't really a clear definition of what a 4s is vs what a 5 is.

If you took all the upgraded innards of a 5 and put them in the casing of a 4, then what is it?

I'm tired of hearing "minor spec bumps". the 3Gs was not a minor bump. iOS4 proved that. I don't understand why the case alone is dictating what people are calling it, when the thing hasn't even been revealed yet. If you gave me a iPhone 4 that had a better camera, A5 processor, more ram, etc I would not consider any of that minor and I'd be happy to take it.

I wouldn't mind a redesign, don't get me wrong, but I don't know why everyone is in such a rush. For 3 years the iPhone looked relatively the same. Then the 4 came out and everyone fell in love with it. Now they're ready for something new already?

This keynote can't come soon enough. I just wanna blow some money, get a new gadget, and not visit this site for the next 9 months.

Why the number 1

Apple will announce that they have just received a patent on the number 1.

if the notification is intended by apple to mean that there will only be one new iPhone announced, then that tells me that the "iPhone 4S" will simply be called the redesigned iPhone 4. after all, it will look virtually identical to the existing 4. maybe apple will keep things simple and and offer the iPhone 4 from that point forward with an A5 chip.

It's really interesting as to why they left a "1" badge on the Phone app. Could mean so many things. I guess we'll find out next week for sure.

My friend joked: "Whoever worked the PR department must have had a missed call and realized it too late after the screenshot" haha

Your friend should be on Last Comic Standing.

I think the missed call/message icon is referring to the fact that the person who has received this invite has a message to come to the event.

I think the notification could mean one of three things:

- World's #1 Phone
- One global phone
- Steve Jobs' famous "One more thing" line, which could mean we might see an appearance by Mr. Jobs...

Whatever it stands for, we'll all find out on October 4th!

What's interesting is that there's a new rumor at 9to5 saying that the tapered iPhone (the redesigned one) is the low-end entry model, and the model that looks more like the current iPhone 4 is the real iPhone 5 with larger upgrades.

It's going to be a wild week.

Gruber is saying this implies that there will only be one iPhone release this year, the iPhone 4S, 4 Plus, whatever you want to call it.

This is what the phone icon with badge will end up meaning:

They do the presentation, introduce the iPhone 5 and the 4S. At the end, just before they are about to wrap up, everyone will hear the new voicemail alert sound. Whoever is presenting will play the voicemail, and it will be a quick recording from Jobs saying 'Just wanted to remind you to tell them about the amazing new Assistant feature'.

Something along the lines of that would be pretty cool. I think that's us reading too much into it, but it would still be cool nonetheless.

Apple will announce that they have just received a patent on the number 1.

Of course. And then they can sue anyone that uses the number 1 in anything.

if you flip the 1 upside down, it resembles a lowercase L..
what else has a lowercase L in its name? The Samsung galaxy S 2! I think they're trying to tell us that they are about to acquire Samsung and start selling apple branded android phones.

Its almost too obvious when you look into it...

I think this pretty much nails it. Also, it could mean more than one thing, and be left open to interpretation.
