<Set rant bit>
Reading threads like this one hurt my head, as there are so many people saying things that aren't even remotely true.
Oh, I'm sure they believe them, but they haven't a clue of how wrong they are and what level of idiocy they've spouted.
So, a few bullet points to help guide this thread into potentially better waters:
* CDMA is used outside of North America. A lot. As much as GSM/UMTS? No, but China and Japan are covered with it, as are other countries. The lifetime of CDMA will extend well into the 2020s - just like analog did.
* There's no CDMA capability in the 3GS, where "CDMA" is IS-95/IS-2000 etc. Get over that idea.
* I wouldn't say Verizon is "ahead of schedule" on LTE deployment. They have an extremely aggressive schedule that depends on a whole lot of things coming together, some of which are... well, I can't say more there.
* The idea that there won't be any LTE/CDMA/EVDO compatibility and handoffs is silly. The hundreds if not thousand of architects, designers, developers and testers working on this functionality RIGHT NOW would find that line of commentary off the hook (so to speak).
Oh well.

OK, with that out of the way, the idea of offering one iPhone model to cover the major technologies offered today (HSPA, GSM, CDMA, EVDO) would be very attractive. There have been rumors that there is such a chipset forthcoming at some point from some vendor. This would allow Apple to introduce an iPhone that works in most parts of the globe (there are some oddball frequency bands out there which don't make economic sense to cover).
Down the road they could add LTE and be set. I don't think they want to get into handset fragmentation that has always been a cross for the cell phone industry to bear (and one that appears to be happening for Android right now).
I could see it now - "Oh, and one last thing. You've asked for the ability to have the iPhone on other networks. Well, we've added that capability. As long as your cell phone provider offers service on standard bands, this new iPhone will work."
