Analyst Claims: Qualcomm 3G Chip Destined for Verizon iPhone, Tablet Based on P.A. Semi Processor

Like many of you here I am sure that Google, Microsoft and Palm would love to see Apple stay exclusive to AT&T because it really lets them get their foot in the door and build market share.

I don't think Apple wants to see that happen though. Right now Apple might be looking at data that shows everything is great with iPhone being exclusive to AT&T, but I wonder how much that data will change by next year at this time?

If Android starts to threaten I can promise you that a Verizon iPhone will be rolled out quicker then you can say - Intel.

<Set rant bit>

Reading threads like this one hurt my head, as there are so many people saying things that aren't even remotely true.

Oh, I'm sure they believe them, but they haven't a clue of how wrong they are and what level of idiocy they've spouted.

So, a few bullet points to help guide this thread into potentially better waters:

* CDMA is used outside of North America. A lot. As much as GSM/UMTS? No, but China and Japan are covered with it, as are other countries. The lifetime of CDMA will extend well into the 2020s - just like analog did.

* There's no CDMA capability in the 3GS, where "CDMA" is IS-95/IS-2000 etc. Get over that idea.

* I wouldn't say Verizon is "ahead of schedule" on LTE deployment. They have an extremely aggressive schedule that depends on a whole lot of things coming together, some of which are... well, I can't say more there.

* The idea that there won't be any LTE/CDMA/EVDO compatibility and handoffs is silly. The hundreds if not thousand of architects, designers, developers and testers working on this functionality RIGHT NOW would find that line of commentary off the hook (so to speak).

Oh well.

<unset rant bit>

OK, with that out of the way, the idea of offering one iPhone model to cover the major technologies offered today (HSPA, GSM, CDMA, EVDO) would be very attractive. There have been rumors that there is such a chipset forthcoming at some point from some vendor. This would allow Apple to introduce an iPhone that works in most parts of the globe (there are some oddball frequency bands out there which don't make economic sense to cover).

Down the road they could add LTE and be set. I don't think they want to get into handset fragmentation that has always been a cross for the cell phone industry to bear (and one that appears to be happening for Android right now).

I could see it now - "Oh, and one last thing. You've asked for the ability to have the iPhone on other networks. Well, we've added that capability. As long as your cell phone provider offers service on standard bands, this new iPhone will work."

Mad Props 2 KDarling

Yo, people, I know y'all wouldn't be hay-ten so swiftly if we were all face to face (and you could see my 24" pythons flexing and spewing right in front of you=danger danger!), so don't be frontin'!

Out here in NYC, we keep it all real, we see each other on the streets; actually, we STEP UP, TOO, me and you, face-to-face, no matta what the race, keepin' pace.

So why you all gotta get your panties twisted over a soon-to-be-outdated device my motha never heard of?! Dig. Only say what a MAN would say to another MAN while seeing that man's eyes!! Like KDarling (who obviously talks to real, fleshy humans day-to-day), I believe you should:

Stop insulting so freely
Just because you can'see-me!

All I know is what I want: when the hell are they gonna put the I-Chip in my head so I can do it all, all the time, without having to whip it in and out, every time?!

who the heck cares if the verizon iphone has a verizon logo on it? as long as it's on the back and non obtrusive, i have no problems with it. Some people really need to get in sync with reality :confused:. what I would be more concerned about is whether verizon will have any hand in modifying the phone software or hardware itself and I think that after the droid and htc eris releases which were untouched we can rest assured that verizon will not mess with the iphone.
