I hope this thing comes standard, or offers a model with an Intel Core i7 720QM. That would make sense, as it is basically a desktop with laptop hardware, and Intel is releasing the mobile Core i7 line on the 23rd.

I doubt it. Intel just confirmed that Arrandale will start shipping in Q4 so unless Apple gets them earlier, we won't see an update or it would be ridiculous to update few weeks before new CPUs

Isn't Arrandale the CPU with the integrated GPU right on the CPU? If so, no thanks. I've seen and had the misfortune of using Intel's GPUs, and I never want to ever touch another GPU made by them again.

I hope they don't put laptop grade components in the iMac. The iMac is Apple's last (poor) half-step to the MacPro. Read all the MP threads and half of them are people moaning about no mini-tower. Many people buy the iMac because the MP is simply unaffordable and the closest they can get in terms of performance (but admittedly it's a loooong way off). The bottom line is that if you reduce or degrade the components inside the iMac, I don't think it will push people "up" to the MP, I think it will force people back to PCs.

They've been putting laptop parts in the iMac for years now, and there hasn't been a massive exodus to PC.

Why do people want SSD in Desktops? Seems like a huge waste of money for very little if any advantage.
Out of curiousty, why would you want that?
Eeer... hard-drives are the biggest performance-bottleneck in modern computers when it comes to real-world application performance. The problem isn't the linear read/write speed (that's only important for handling large files such as audio/video data), it's the access times and that's where SSDs are way better than traditional hard-discs.

what's the point of watching BR on iMacs or laptops or 24" LCDs? Even the 30" cinema display would not be sufficient.
24" iMacs (and the 17" MBP) already have higher-than-full-hd resolution.

I could see the Imac getting very thin if apple totally redesigned the mobo into the base of the stand, then fed the wires & cables upto the screen
They already had that, it was called the iMac G4. ;)

Yes. Why you're so negative about them? It'll be fine for people who don't need GPU very much plus it's cheap. iMac will have another GPU as well

"Little if any advantage" ? The speed increase is phenominal.

The other thing is noise (as in, zero) and, especially important to the iMac, just about zero heat.

I'd like an SSD option (or, rather, the ability to easily upgrade the hard drive) as I don't have tons of media and files other than a smallish 20 GB iTunes library; one of the new 160 GB Intel G2 SSDs would be perfect for my needs, fast, quiet, cool and GASP! Apple could make the iMac even THINNER! :)

MacBook changes will likely bring a move to the internal battery, replacing mini-DVI with Mini Display Port, dropping FireWire, and maybe adding the SD slot..
To your predictions, I will add USB 3.0 and combining the two audio ports into one like the 13" MacBook Pro. I also expect the iMac to get the SD slot, with Blu-ray and USB 3.0 as possibilities. A matte screen option is must since not everyone likes glossy.

As far as processors are concerned, Apple is between a rock and a hard place. They can stay with dual-core and use the Core i7-620M (32nm Westmere microarchitecture) running at 2.66 GHz (3.33 GHz turbo) or move to quad-core and use the Core i7-920XM (45nm Nehalem microarchitecture) running at 2.0 GHz (3.2 GHz turbo). Maybe the Core i7-620M will be standard and the Core i7-920XM will be a CTO option.

no new mac laptop for me until BLU-RAY!!!

sorry, time passes and Apple continues to just stonewall this new technology

Are you honestly going to argue that you need a blueray drive in your computer? The only thing that you can currently use the format for is watching movies. And as much as I appreciate high def, even on the 17" MBPs a dvd quality video is enough. I have no doubts that one day all MBPs will come with a blue ray drive but I would much rather want them to wait until someone manufactures a fast burner with a relatively low price. And that is not likely to happen in the next 1-2 years so suck it up.

Oh man... I totally forgot... because YOU never use it, then it's perfectly fine for Apple to omit it as default... I mean so long as YOU never EVER use it, then I'm "stupid" right? I mean, I must be because I'm still stuck in an era where I actually USE the numeric keypad, but YOU NEVER use it so it's ok.

You ignore all the praise I gave the iMac, ignore the point of my post but pick up on 1 aspect which was a mute point.... and yes, I'm fully aware you can order one at no cost, but discussing the "keypad" was not the point of my post.

The "I don't need it" syndrome. This forum haz it. :D

Well I'd imagine since they can already fit the current speed components into the current MacBook/Pro notebooks, we can only imagine they will either:
1) User faster components and make it just a bit thinner.
2) Use the same components and make it a lot thinner.

Isn't this the EOT goal for Apple: a computer so thin it doesn't exist. :D

Kidding aside, can't Apple apply their "unibody" construction to the iMac as well? Build a chassis where everything including the stand is screwed onto the up case frame, with the screen mounted on top the frame, with everything else underneath. Then they can make it thinner since the back cover is essential the only thin that defines such a limitation of thickness.

Wohoo, I've been savin up for an iMac for almost a year. I hope the new model will see price cuts (7-10%?).

This will be my first new computer since 2000, gonna give my current Mac (Dual 450 Mhz PowerPC G4 384 MB SDRAM, I know it sucks :D) to my mom... woahaha

Considering that the vast majority of users never upgrade their computers, why would Apple do that? That's only catering to the build-your-own computer geek types - they a very small segment of market.

Sadly, I get the sense that every iMac revision makes it harder and harder to upgrade. And that is the main reason why I haven't gotten one.

Even though few people upgrade their computers frequently, many more will have options added at the time of purchase (2nd drive, more RAM, ...).

"Upgradeable" also means "user repairable" - when that hard drive dies it's nice if it is easily accessible.

An NTSC DVD picture is 307 Kpixels (potentially 345 Kpixels for anamorphic discs).

A BD picture is 2074 Kpixels.

Don't you think that a 2 Mpixel image shrunk to 1.8 Mpixels (20" Imac) or displayed rull resolution (24" Imac) would look sharper than a 0.3 Mpixel image that's been stretched?

Yes. No they can hold data, too.

Good enough for you. The good old "I don't need it syndrome" so I shouldn't have the option to get it.

I sell a boat load of Sony Vaios with BD and they start at $799. When has cost of components been a concern to a company selling premium priced products with fat margins ? Not a good excuse to wait 1-2 years.
