I don't know what poor people you're hanging out with but $600 is alot of money and we both know it doesn't stop at 600 dollars if we get down to it. Don't tell me that the PC companies are selling computers cheaply out of the goodness of their hearts. It's a business decision just like Apple makes business decisions on what they provide and what they don't.

No, the poor people are buying $299 emachines. I used the $600 example to counter the arguement about half baked. That $600 HP is $199 less than the 50% slower and 50% less storage space mini.

Apple could sell in those segments for $50 more and still make a profit.

Put them in mini ATX cases and call them Performas. Apple would have 40% market share within a couple of years.

I want to sell Apples to all of my customers, not just the affluent. :apple:

redesigned imac mac mini etc

regarding a thinner design and / or more powerful cpus and gpus couldn't they make a unibody case for both and turn the huge surface area of the aluminum in a giant heat sink there wouldn't even need to be any fans - total silence - the latest cpus and gpus run extremely cool anyway don't they?

so
i7 cpu
8gb ram
latest gpu
1tb hd
bluray
all standard and all coolled passively by the giant heatsink called the unibody case cool idea hey?

I often wonder if Blu-ray is the last optical technology -

I mean who wants disks? they are so last millennium >_0 SDXC upto 2 Tb ... for those who realllly want to own physical things. (edit: to list the first technology i googled :p)

Of all the threads screaming 'I wanna Blu-ray' the same arguments seems very lacking to me - x

Last millenium ?

BD technology is scaling up to one terabyte. One hundred to two hundred GB discs should start appearing in the next couple of years. The one Terabyte discs are probably five years out.

I would guess that a 24" unibody case would cost a fortune to make and would be pretty pointless in a desktop computer seeing as it's main design feature is to make a portable computer as light and rigid as possible.

Ok, didn't finish reading...but now you're still going into a different segment. So, Apple is providing the price point but just not the specific options that you wish...which we're just going to go into tit for tat here becuase show me the HP that comes with the iLife software at your 600 dollar price point.

Not that I wish, the different choices that they would like.

You're right about iLife. When I demo iLife for PC users who have price objections and tell them what it would cost them to add those capabilities to the PC, it's usually enough to overcome their price objections about Apples.

I offer them minis. When they see that they can get twice as much computer for the same price they ask me if I'm on commission. :D

I admit, I didn't finish reading before I started replying - but do you explain the differences between a PC and Mac or do you simply go by hardware? If that's the case then I guess it doesn't matter what phone you buy, or what appliance you buy becuase bigger is better right?

Which that makes sense...but no company is going to match hardware to hardware options at the same price point - that's obvious with the mounting iPod Touch vs Zune HD argument (battle) that is being waged - but that doesn't mean that there are "No Macs for poor people. They shouldn't be using computers anyway. And we don't want them in our stylish, hip stores. They would ruin the ambience with their Walmart wardrobes and annoying behavior. Let eat cake and use emachines" which is what prompted the reply in the first place.

They have repeatedly said that they are not in the business of low-end computing and don't want to be.

Apple IS in the low-end computing business (Mini, iMac, and Macbook)...Apple is not in the LOW COMPUTER PRICE business that would REFLECT their low-end computers. Apple want's its high margins...which is fine if you are an Apple employee, stockholder, or consumer willing to spend more money.

I'm not picking on you...I just want you and others to notice a difference in wording.

The baseline Mini, iMac, and Macbook models are all low-end hardware computers...and the same (or very similar and if not better) low-end parts (faster chips, more ram, larger drives, more video options) in the PC world sell for a fraction of what Apple charges. Operating systems aside, an $1199 iMac (with 20" monitor, 2gb ram, 320gig hdd, dvd) can be bought in the PC world for $500-$600 depending on your favorite manufacturer (yes, with a 20" monitor). Apple only reduces it's price one time a year while PC vendors update pricing monthly or worst quarterly.

I would love to buy an upcoming iMac...so long as Apple drops the price and/or improves the specs to my liking...our Mini runs well but would like to have a 3-year-newer Mac with better specs if it's affordable as a secondary machine.

Well, that could explain why :apple: is always making more money than its competitors...

Anyway this thread is not about Mac vs PC, please why always the topics are diverted to this boring theme (unless you enjoy sparking the fanboys vs the anti fanboys epic battle).

Thanks for the eye candy! One is not enough! Where are the people that do Mac graphics designs and with plenty creativity to illustrate what the rumored iMac and MacBook will look like?

I am not one of them, but I would love to see them posting something interesting to get back on topic!

Thanks!

I do have to say that I do miss the good ole rumors of mockups and fuzzy pictures.

It's so funny seeing fanboys post here who say "Oh the consumer really doesn't need this" because Apple doesn't see fit in doing it.

I surely hope they will add Bluray support, this way a mac mini becomes a perfect media centre for me.

I love watching movies on a Beamer hooked up to my mac mini, and i just started buying Bluray disks instead of dvd's , and if the mini/imacs will get support for Bluray this will mean for me that i don't have to buy a sepparate BD player to watch full hd movies.

off topic : How does Blu ray playback via a computer compare in quality to a stand alone player?

Normal dvd looks great with the osx dvd player software, hope the same goed for Bluray once it gets there.

I think it's funny to see people who come to a mac forum to say that it's funny that mac fanboys like the prodcuts that the mac company comes out with. I'm sure that doesn't happen on any other forum - I mean what Microsoft user would go to a Microsoft forum to say that they like their Microsoft product.

how much would it cost?

photo apps come with kodak and other digital cameras
Windows Vista and 7 come with an iMovie type app
GarageBand, how many people use it?
iWeb, there are free website creation kits on every domain registration site. and in the age of facebook how many people are going to create websites?

Define "always". And define "making more money". For numerous years, Apple was on the brink of bankruptcy. So you can't say that Apple was always making more money than its competitors if Apple was almost bankrupt. :) But let's not pick on Apple.

Yup...I totally agree...the post I replied to was the 2nd post on this topic!

I am looking forward to the new iMacs and as I said, if the price is worthy enough, I will buy a new iMac as a secondary (used far far less than my primary) computer.

I'm hoping Apple gets the base iMac to $999 and throws in some beefier specs like 4gig ram and a high end dual-core processor or low end quad.
