Remember the days, not too long ago, when Apple would be the first in the industry to incorporate Intel's newest cutting-edge chips?

I miss those days... :(

We all do. I miss the days when "it was faster and cost less". Remember those commercials?

Ok guys. My prediction:

Quad Core or i5 chipset FOR SURE.
Minor redesign, nothing huge, the iMac looks ownage right now already
PCI x16 slots that the users can change. . with SLI (2 slots on the bottom would be great) Love yah too, gamers.

Im in dream land.

Oh, and its 99 bucks.

*Looks at corners of Aluminium iMac ...

*Checks corners ...

"Yup, they're rounded".

Haha, I checked too. But then I realized they said "edges." The edges are currently not rounded.

I wonder if they will be more unibody-ish and get rid of the black plasticky back.

If definitely needs more grunt to compete in the desktop market.
Ram at least up to 6 gig

Making it thinner is not needed, but they have made these cosmetic changes along it's lifespan.

I don't think we will see a touch screen, but what about an optional multi touch pad that is bigger than those seen on macbooks. It could also double as a pen tablet for graphic design.

A new 30" top of the line model would be pricey and probably asking too much.

Yes there are.

Granted, these are slim/laptop drives, but I would imagine that is what would be used in an iMac anyway.
I'm sorry, I should have specified--none in the 9.5mm size. The drives you linked are 13mm units. Apple machines (and more importantly for me, my HTPC case) require the 9.5mm drives.

The iMac could accommodate a 12.7mm drive with little effort, but it's clearly not the slot-load component that is standing in the way. If Apple decided they wanted Blu-ray drives, I'm sure there's at least one manufacturer that would be willing to spit out a slot-load version relatively quickly.

When are they releasing the iMac? When they say several weeks, what does that mean?

Anyway, I think they will make it more like the MBP screen; all black on front with less chin and all aluminum on back. Basically like the current cinema display but with smoothed out corners added to the back side.

Re: iMac redesign

This is Apple, guys - it WILL be underwhelming. Remember when Steve unveiled the aluminium iMac? He had his Keynote presentation going with a picture of the white iMac...

''Here's the old one!!''

*Changes picture to aluminium iMac*

''And here's the new one!!!''

*silence*

The disappointment was tangible. Check out the video on YouTube.

All this talk of quad core, blu-ray, multi-touch pads.....it's just raising hopes which will undoubtedly be dashed upon arrival. Let's just assume it'll be a CPU bump, 4gb ram as standard across all models, and 'redesigned' to have rounded edges and black keys on the keyboard.

Oh, and they'll knock £20/$40 off the price!!!!!

Its a broad term they use so whenever it comes out they can say they were right.

Shaw Wu was saying the new imacs would come out immenitely, IIRC, in december. They ended up coming out in April.

Apple needs to get rid of the iMac already and just start manufacturing the dockable tablet that I have seen mockups of.. That would stimulate Apple and it's stock price as everybody who has a current iMac would want one. I know I would..

Everybody?!? I know I have zero interest in a tablet (or iPod or iPhone) and I can't think of any of the people I help who would want a tablet either.

I agree. An iMac twice the thickness with a desktop chop would be fine with me, if it's possible. And I really don't see why not, seeing as how I've got two Asus 1U pizza boxes running Core 2 quad desktop chips day in, day out at work.

It'd be worth the performance, especially seeing as how the space behind an iMac IMO is wasted; my desk is about 3 feet deep. What's a few more inches in thickness?

I haven't opened up one of these thin iMacs to see where things are placed inside, but the problem probably isn't so much the thinness of the iMac not being able to handle the heat (although no doubt is part of it), the real problem is likely to be the heat build-up being directly behind the screen, which is something you obviously wouldn't get with a "pizza box" machine (or a laptop for that matter). "Too much" heat would cause problems with the screen.

surely they will finally update the macbook with an "all new" version. unless of course the 13 inch pro really was a snap decision with nothing in the pipeline, which seems strange given apples trepid nature.

Ha you can join me in that :p - I really can't think of a worse idea without it being given a gimmick price tag for students to buy to show off in the common room

But to leave that for another argument :p

But a couple of weeks ... well im pretty sure the iMac will be released in weeks from now ... but that could be 2 ... 3 ... 12 .... 52 weeks fo all the assurance these guys give :p

Are they known to be particularly reliable?

Do quad core notebook chips exist yet? That would be a nice upgrade for the iMac. If not, what's the latest chip out and what are the benefits to the current iMac chipset?

Yes. They have existed for over 2 years now. But they are still very expensive. Quite a few of the IBM ThinkPad models got quad core laptop's.

I'm all for quadcore in a IMAC, but been ranting about it for soon 2 years now and still no results:eek:

Why does the article say several weeks, when experience says several months.

And high end ???

Haha, don't make be laugh. It's more like mid/low end product to a high end price:p

The mac pro is the only high end computer product apple's got

Redesigns for imacs are only announced in Januarys and Augusts (so far). It's due for one in 2010-11. Moving the 'chin' to the top or removing it would be nice, cuz the screen is too high for people in dire need of bifocals. Making the screen height adjustable would work, too.

Chin to the top?

You've got to be kiddding. I couldn't imagine a worse move.

I hope any new imac comes with a height adjustable foot/arm.
I also hope they flip it upside down, putting the drive, etc on top. This way stuff could be put under the screen (for those small rooms where every inch counts) + you don't get whiplash because the screen gets to high.

This has to be the most annoying thing with their new products. I was planning on buying an iMac in the next few days, and now I feel compelled to wait and see whether there's something behind this story.

Despite the iMac already being a nice (although outrageously overpriced) machine, I'd feel somehow ripped off if I bought one and a new version was released less than a month later ...
