I'm looking to get the 11 inch MBA in a few weeks, something unthinkable to me before the announcement. Apple really knocked it out of the park with this one.

...

I would take a refurb white macbook and put an SSD in it way before I would buy a new air...cheaper than the 11.6" too

Lets be nice to analysts they're people too. Though, If we all listened to their predictions Apple would be in Trillions Market Cap.

I don't see any need for this MacBook Air. I could be wrong since I said the same when iPad came out. Apple has one of the best marketing departments out there after MS. As my friend says, "They can sell sand in the desert and people will still buy it."

I'd buy one instantly, if it wasn't for the fact that I already own a 15" macbook pro and an iPad. I've regretted going for the 15" almost right from the moment I bought the macbook. Although I LOVE my macbook, it's really a bit too big to take with you comfortably to classes for taking notes (I'm a sociology student). The macbook nowadays functions as a desktop computer.bWhen the iPad came out, I was really happy, bought it and now I take college notes on the iPad. Although it is really portable and browsing the web on it actually is MAGICAL, typing college notes it for more than a few minutes really is a pain, as least when you do so extensively like I do. I feel that the Air would work perfectly for me, more portable than the 15" or even 13" macbooks and easier to type on than the iPad. I'm a bit unsure where I'd go for the 11" or 13", but honestly I don't feel I can justify buying a macbook air when I've already got an iPad and a macbook pro.

sigh

The 11.6 Air will be a huge hit for Apple as opposed to the old Air or even the new 13". The 11" is a true successor to the 12" Powerbook. :)

Get a bluetooth keyboard for your ipad. Apples is so small it would fit right in your bag and be no thicker than an air when stacked on an ipad with the battery overhanging the edge of the ipad

That's a good idea. I'll try that! Thanks. I hadn't thought of that.

I have to say though, that the idea of a macbook air appeals to me more though.;) (Except for the part in which you have to spend the money to get one)

Hardware isn't evolving at the rate it did in the past. I think that is a big part of Apple's strategy. A deemphasis on hardware specs and reemphasis on hardware/software capabilities. The battery life is exceptional on the new MBA. The SSD makes it as close to iPad in terms of responsiveness/startup as a notebook can get. For short trips I just take my iPad with me. I would take this new MBA to do video/photo editing during flights. I can comfortably carry either with one hand through an airport without need of a backpack. I can't say the same for a MBP. To each his own. I think Steve is right though. All notebooks will be like the MBA in the future.

good comment... Mobility is the theme and what sells these days: low power/long batteries, light weight and instant-on, sells over power/performance/capacity.

I'm totally leaning towards getting one. I want to touch one and look it over first, but it sounds like it'll fill my needs. I've got a very worn out first gen MBA and it's been a great machine - but the 11inch is a winner for me. Time to upgrade! :-D

The thing nowadays with Apple that has changed a lot since i got my iMac in early 2008 is that there is more choice than there ever was. Back then the only 13" laptop they had was the plastic MacBook. Now you can get a pro 13" an Air 13" a 11" Air. They have upped the res so thats a big improvement too and of course we have the iPads for those who don't need OS X on the go. :)

These are ipads with a full size keyboard and cover.

They will be very successful with the crowd that doesn't have problems having their "stuff" on Apple's or ISP's "cloud servers".

That is the way of the future.

Small device, all the info whenever you need it, but only then.

I ordered the 11.6 because I will finally be able to use my mac on flights when the person in front of me leans his chair back. I got 4 gigs or ram, 1.6 proc and 128 gig flash... Can't wait.. My big ol mac book pro can now stay home!

This is replacing a MacBook Pro monster. There's no reason to buy the MacBook Pro anymore. No one with any sense is actually do video editing with a laptop anymore.

I predict that while they are an awesome line of products, I have no room in my personal lineup for a MacBook Air.

In my opinion, they are great for those who need a portable full keyboard machine. However, as a home user, my Aluminum MacBook gets very little use. One might think that a MacBook Air and 27" display make a nice setup, except that the MacBook Air does not connect FW800 drives and requires a separate optical solution. Likewise it is underpowered for use as a primary machine unless your needs are light.

I would recommend an iMac and iPad combo to deliver the most comprehensive Mac experience. The iMac has power, great design, and can hook up FW800 drives for external media storage and backup. The iPad provides the portable, instant on, quick reference and task option, in a package lighter than a notebook, and once the iPad is updated with a FaceTime camera, I will no longer even need my MacBook.

For the specs...they seem kind of expensive. Why wouldn't you just buy a macbook for $999? Better specs and very portable...No one really neeeds that thin of a computer, other than image.

The 11 inch MBA is half the weight of a 13 inch MBP. Anyone doing a lot of travelling with their laptop in their rucksack or briefcase is going to love the size and weight difference, and unlike the iPad it runs MacOSX so you can run databases, MS Office and all the other boring things needed to make some money! I would love one for those reasons alone. I recently lugged a 15 inch around Italy for work. The hotel wasn't that secure and it was a terrible encumbrance to have 2.5 kgs with me at all times. The only disadvantage would be the shorter battery life, but 5 hours at the airport and on the plane would be very bad for most of my journeys.

The 11.6” MBA is sexee, but either MBA wouldn’t meet my needs as a primary machine…iMovie & Photoshop alone might tax it, and I’m usually running up to a dozen apps simultaneously. I also don’t have the need for a secondary machine, especially at that price. Another thing is that I’d probably need to use something like Mobile Me to use files on both machines.

But the analysts might be right.

how many iPad 64GB G3 are sold per quarter?

I wonder how many people will consider a $999 MBA over a $829 iPad. Although you would have to add the cost of a USB G3 connection to the MBA.

Granny Smith and Golden Delicious. They are two completely different UIs. The iPad runs Apps. The MBA runs OS X. Really depends on your needs. Unless you plan to BT KB or KB dock it, the iPad is not intended for extensive keyboard use. The touchscreen iPad also has significant advantages over the trackpad. And yet the MBA has an iSight/FT camera. There are a lot of things to consider, the least of which is price.

People who buy portable Computers (Notebooks) do not need that much of processing power. So a C2D is just fine. AND its not 2.5 years old. Learn something about how a processor is processed in its very own production cycle over the time while the technology it is based on matures :D
The HD itself and RAM where the bottlenecks of the new Airs predecessors. For the addressed average user it is not recognizable what processor powers the Laptop. But he recognizes the increased Battery life and a much sleeker Laptop...

This thing rocks. I can count on one hand the times Ive stuck a CD or DVD into my Macbook. Put it on a stick and call it a day. This would be perfect for the road or in the living room.

This will be a big hit. You watch.

Three of my friends -- all females, interestingly enough -- are getting the Air this week. Why?

1. It's crazy light. That matters to a lot of people.

2. It's more capable than the iPad, which is the only hyper-light OSX/iOS alternative at the moment. No, the MacBook isn't.

3. It handles their entire work load. Editing docs, doing email, wrassling spreadsheets, giving presentations, web research, blah blah blah. And running Photoshop Elements, in one case. They're not graphics pros or code jockeys, and they don't need more horsepower.

4. The build quality is very high.

5. They live in the Apple ecosystem, and rely on various aspects of OSX to do their work. These are all former Windows users, as it happens, and I don't hear any desire to revert back to that adventure.

6. They can afford it.

Sound like anyone you know?

Case closed. :p

No.

I've always hated that noise that the dvd drive makes when starting a mac up. Mine died in my iMac so i removed it. Haven't missed it once.

Folks...yeah its compact, yeah its beautiful, yeah it has Solid State Storage
But an introductory price of 999.99 for a pretty piece of aluminum with 2.5+ year old hardware? This is silliness people. If it had "VAIO" on the shell, everyone would be laughing...Dont drink the :apple: juice this time.

The 11.1" Sony Vaio X has the same ram and hard drive capacity as the base 11.6" MBA but has a much inferior Intel Atom processor and starts at $1299 ($300 more than the MBA).

The 13.1" Sony Vaio Z starts at $1799 with a core i5, 128 GB SSD and 4 GB of ram. The 13.3" MBA with a 128 GB SSD, 4 GB of ram and a core 2 duo costs $1399 so you are paying $400 more for the Sony and an upgrade to a core i5.

Did you even check your facts before posting?
