This could work if:

1. :apple: sets subscription pricing model equal to or better than Netflix

and

2. :apple: service can/will stream newly released titles where Netflix currently issues blu-ray and dvd formats

That said, physical media is a problem as I've received (on occasion) Netflix DVDs in the mail that were cracked or scratched beyond belief and had to call customer service and have them dispatch immediately an unscathed replacement. Not to mention this could largely offset iTunes movie rental revenues. But my guess is that if said service is indeed what :apple: has planned, it would make sense that it would supercede iTunes movie rentals altogether. For sure, this would spur Apple TV2 sales.

If any of the above isn't true, then I'm sticking to Netflix.

Even if it did launch a service to rival Netflix, it would only be for the U.S.. Nobody gives Canada good service except Netflix is starting to be better.

Why would Apple want a bunch of warehouses full of DVDs?

Thank you! I'm not understanding why people think Apple would want a piece of the snail-mail optical market. I know people on here stream a lot, but they're not the majority of Netflix.

But even then, I don't understand why Apple would want a bunch of game console apps?

And they'd lose a not-insignificant number of streaming customers if you could only stream to Apple devices.

There's nothing buying Netflix would give Apple that Apple couldn't do themselves, or already have. And there's a lot buying Netflix would give Apple that they have zero interest in. Including some anti-trust investigations.

Competition is great, but they’d have to do a LOT to compete with Netflix’s total catalog. (Their streaming catalog has disappointed me a bit, but well worth the low price even so!)

Obviously if this happened, Apple would favor streaming. But they COULD have a legitimate use for a massive physical DVD inventory as well. They have a huge campus with lots of parking, and hanging optical discs overhead works even better than car-lot flags, for the purpose of scaring birds away before they defecate on hard-working employees’ vehicles.

Totally, cause Apple's video content pricing mirrors it's song's. Oh wait?! Apples and Oranges dude...lets make a really simple example

Netflix: 7.99 Unlimited Streaming*
Glee Season 1*
BSG Seasons 1-4*
Dexter Seasons 1-2*
(You get the idea)

Apple: Pay Per View
Glee, Season 1 = $22.77
BSG Seasons 1-4 = $72.27
Dexter Seasons 1-2 = $60.39
(You get the idea)

Yeah, pro-sumer... LOL

overall the netflix streaming selection is crap compared to iTunes which is why it's so cheap.

Silly analysist

These data centers will allow every Apple users to have a Mobile Me account. All of our info will be stored on these giant Apple shaped clouds. The more Apple gives up, the more we will depend on them.
Apple does have the clout and connections to compete in the streaming market... but they already are in that market with iTunes/ATV. Will this media venture continue to evolve for Apple? Of course. But thinking these data centers are for some huge massive influx into the media streaming buzz by Apple is ridiculous. The talks between Apple and the content producers would be more massive than these data centers. Something like that couldn't stay hidden.
I for one welcome out new Apple shaped cloud overlords. May they profit like madmen with all of our personal info.

Let's see...

Netflix:
Dexter Season 3: Not Available
Weeds Season 6: Not Available
Nurse Jackie Season 1 & 2: Not Available
House MD - all 7 seasons: NOT available

Apple:
All of the above..Check.

So, in your example above, yes Apple costs more money. In my example above, you can't even get the content on Netflix.... So, for those who like to watch a bunch of old stuff, Netflix is great, and I certainly get my 10 bucks worth out of it, but sometimes people need more, and thank god Apple gives us that option, although I will admit, I'd rather give my business to Amazon where it's consistently cheaper then Apple for most of the content.

I got boxee, that made me put my Apple TV to my moms entertainment center... Sorry Apple, but sometimes you just need Boxee... (netflix, vudu, Navi-X and many more!....)

Don't agree

Only question. Why?

Some say Apple need to buy Netflix. Have those of you even considered what Netflix charges for monthly streaming?

$8

Apple will never let customers eat that much for so little. The day Apple buys Netflix, DVDs would stop, and streaming would go up to $30 a month.

Promised.

With all due respect, it's not Apple that sets the pricing, it's the record companies and movie studios. We've all read countless articles about these companies dictating as many terms as they can to Apple. Those companies insisted on DRM, not Apple, and those companies also were against the "one price fits all" 99 cent song, but Jobs convinced them to keep the price low and caved on the DRM. Now the DRM is gone and the price is $1.29, the result of yet another negotiation. The point is, people talk as if Apple makes their own music and movies and then overcharges for them. They have to pay for it.

Supposedly Apple makes very little to nothing of what they charge for songs. Where they make their money is the gazillions of devices they sell to play the stuff on.

If Apple comes out with a deal that includes all movie / episode downloads for $10, then uh.

'gasm.

Why did Apple add iPod / iTunes support to a Motorola phone and then the next year introduce their own phone? Apple has the morals of an alley cat.

Seriously, the ROKR from 2005? That only held 100 songs and was universally panned? Time to let it go.

and look at the crappy content that they have for streaming. everything is super old. hopefully if apple does this, they would have new content and people wouldn't mind paying more bc the content is better.

The movie studios control the content, not Netflix or Apple.

I would love this. I like Netflix but their streaming selection is questionable. If new movies when they go to video is streamed. I would get Apple and if netflix doesnt improve then cancel netflix or keep both. 7.99 for streaming for netflix isnt bad if apple can cover streaming new movies for under 20 bucks a month.

Speculation about Apple's plans for its massive new data center in North Carolina has been running rampant for quite some time, and we're always hesitant to place too much emphasis on claims of research analysts, but one report from Jefferies analyst Peter Misek is gaining some attention today for its claim that Apple may be preparing to take on Netflix in the streaming video subscription market.Last week, a report surfaced claiming that Apple had locked in as much as 12 petabytes of storage purportedly set to support video download content. While Apple has been said to be preparing to roll out a cloud-based MobileMe revamp that would allow users to store video, music, and photos on Apple's servers, Misek argues that Apple will further use the capacity to launch a Netflix-like service that would serve to further drive sales of Apple hardware.

Misek sees Apple's plans to potentially double the size of its new data center in the future as the first step towards a massive expansion of its server capacity that could see the company rolling out multiple such sites around the world in the years to come in order to support massive storage and streaming capabilities for such services.

Toss in iAd along with streaming music and it's probably still a longshot... but I love the idea. Apple would DOMINATE the streaming market. Can you imagine the number of Apple users who would pay $10 a month for an all inclusive media streaming service? $10 multiplied by *a giant number* + iAd revenue = huge profit for Apple with more than enough to appease the content producers.

The market cap of Netflix is 12 billion, add another 3 to 5 billion for a buyers premium, and it would take a pretty large chunk of the Apple cash reserves.

I think you are right. Buying Netflix would be like paying $1200 per subscriber (isn't this astonishing? Imagine Apple would paying you $10 a month for ten years for watching movies). Better to invest less than 15 billion dollars and try to build something own. Also Apple is extremely conservative and cautious in buying other companies. They only buy relatively small firms every few years.

SHHH..

Now im all hoping its going to happennnnnnnnnUGHHHH -_-

Netflix is too expensive to acquire. No one will purchase them. Netflix's only draw is that it's throw away money. 8 bucks a month is a beer at a bar. Even if the content stinks, you watch two movies and it's worth it.

That being said, Apple, Google, Amazon, even Redbox are going to wage some serious war during the next few years on Netflix. It could turn into the next Blockbuster and go bankrupt or it could reign supreme with all the goliaths nipping at their heals.

If I were a company and Apple and Google were my competition I'd probably be a little afraid. One coming at me is scary, two isn't even fair.

Not for sale

All companies are for sale. Its called a hostile takeover. Just offer a premium over their share price. But Netflix isnt worth 12 billion. They should have bought them a year and a half ago when it was worth 2.5 billion.

Yet people are willing to bet a lot of money per share. I didnt think they would go over a hundred bucks a share. They are like 232 now. CRAZY!

Sure, selection is not as robust as Apple (as providers make more there)...but Netflix is easily augmented by other services (Amazon/physical copy). Im not advocating omitting Apple totally...but folks would be done a disservice if Netflix went under their control...
