Giving it a minute's thought, the 128GB phone is odd.

Apple was dying, craving, desiring, needing for people to rely on "the cloud". With iPods and other mp3 devices going up to 128gb, and soon beyond, the "cloud" they built is going to be semi-superflous.

I never got the entire "cloud" imperative. Memory was set to become large and cheap, and you never have to worry about losing signal if you have enough memory. All the bandwidth bunging up the communications just so Jimmy John can listen to "Friday" for a 47th time seemed ridiculous. Worse now that 4K UHD TV is stepping forward in the next 2 years.

Wait, didn't Phil denounce NFC in the iPhone 5?

As I recall, Visa and MC had NFC ready for launch alongside the iPhone 5, yet Apple demanded a higher percentage for iPhone NFC transactions that the credit card companies refused, hence the lack of an NFC iPhone 5 model. Now we're told (rumored) that it may be in the 5S. Interesting.

Just think. The pant industry would have to come up with new pants with "looooong" pockets to compensate for this new design.

:D :D :D :D

4.9" might happen. If Apple can make an iPad with a phone PPI (iPad Mini), why not make a phone with tablet PPI? The retina iPad has a PPI of 264, whereas the iPhone 4/5 has 326 PPI. Thus, the screen size can be as big as: 4 * (326 / 264) = 4.93939394 inch.

The hardware for the bigger screen size is the easy part. Android makers already prove the point. It is the apps that is difficult to deal with. Unless Apple find a way to do more that auto scaling, a standard Iphone app will look pretty bad on a 4.8 inches phone. The innovation has to come from the software size to make it happen..

Same go for NFC. Unless Apple find a way to use NFC in a big way (e.g. roll out a payment systems using NFC with Visa,Mastercard etc.). As of now, NFC is more or less a toy for 90% of people who get them (yes, hear about using NFC and tag to turn on the volume, changing the setting etc..). It need to be used by the non-tech guy easily.

It is almost a guarantee that Apple will have to launch something in 2Q13 time frame. If you look at the sales in 2012, there is a distinct pattern of boom and bust. The fast rollout that Tim Cook talked about in Iphone 5 launch has a very major consequence on the sales of the device. Iphone 5 is going to be very front loaded (i.e. 4Q12 and 1Q13 will sales majority of the Iphone 5). The manufacturing line and suppliers will all idle in 2Q13 on waiting for the next Iphone release. It make sense for Apple to speed up the cycle and smooth out the sales. IGZO with longer battery life is a good enough reason for 5S.

I think different colours is certainly something that will happen. Along with a scaled down version alongside the flagship.

Why is Apple getting a cut of the NFC transactions? It's only hardware ... the actually data and processing still goes through the 3G/LTE connection to the credit card providers backend.

Why do people have issues with a larger screen?

so confused. there will be choices. U can have the bigger screen or just a taller screen

No, a 4.9" iPhone can have the same resolution as the iPhone 5.

The iPad Mini update is what interests me the most. So many people are going to be ticked off if it gets a retina display that early. I figured it would so I'm waiting it out. Apple gift cards are all over my Christmas and birthday lists this year! I'll take an iPad Mini 128GB with an A6X, LTE, and a retina display please! By then the regular iPad should be running an A7X quad-core. I don't really see them putting an A5X into the mini since they nixed the iPad 3rd gen and aren't even making that chip any more. The A6X was what the retina display always needed. That's why I skipped the iPad 3. I was going to buy the 4th gen but a Mini retina is so tempting. Must...keep......waiting!

I admit that I really didn't "get" the iPad Mini until I saw it in person. The other day I was able to play with it for the first time and was more impressed than I thought I would be. So was my wife, and she uses the iPad even more than I do. For some reason it feels more like what the iPad was always meant to be: super easy to hold, extremely portable, but with a screen that is still large enough to work and play on.

So here is an interesting question: if Apple switches to bi-yearly updates, what does that mean for iOS updates? Apple often releases new iOS updates alongside new iPhones. Will we start to see x.5 updates with S models, x.0 updates bi-yearly with each model, or the same old schedule? I'd be far more excited to see Apple accelerate iOS development and leap ahead into the future. They have the money and resources to do it, just like they could potentially do with bi-yearly hardware updates. I think it's time to kick it up a notch! Nothing about the iPhone 5 hardware feels outdated. However the software is beginning to feel a little crusty around the edges.

It's too soon for even 5S rumors to be surfacing. Let people enjoy their iP5 for a little while first!

What kinds of differences can we expect to see in the iPhone 5S, anyway? Probably nothing worth upgrading for, that's for sure.

Ask any security person with knowledge of NFC...so easily hackable without having to touch the phone...

NFC is used in a lot of transit systems around the world ... Visa/MasterdCard already have NFC deployed in a lot of country. If the data is properly encrypted then the risks are acceptable.

...that this analyst is full of shXX, and that all he's trying to do is hurt Apple's iPhone5 sales.
It took Apple quite some effort to streamline its release schedule for all iProducts to Fall. Also, I doubt iOS7 would be finished by Spring. Why would Apple deliver an updated iPhone without an updated iOS?

Yes, it definitely seems a bit early to start speculating about not only a possible iPhone5s, but even an iPhone6. As an analyst he's presumed to be brand-neutral. To come up with these predictions right before the biggest shopping season of the year makes one wonder where his loyalties are.

The model with a 4.8" screen is the most interesting. It has a Retina+ IGZO screen, a new A7 quad-core processor variant,

I think it would be good if this was an option, otherwise, the iphone is going to be more and more restricted by specs of it's original success. Having 3 standard screen sizes is too much and will meet the market. Anything bigger and they should just get an iPad mini.

Like my 4S, but I'm attracted by this more than the stretched screen of the 5. Played with the latest Samsung phones and interesting.

5S with NFC just won't happen bc of the design.

My guess:
-A7
-Better camera
-More ram
-iOS7
-Maybe IGZO display

Wow, if the 5S has all of that it'll easily be the best 'S' update to date. I'm skeptical though.
As for the 4.8" display, maybe this is part of Apple's plan to have a cheaper iPhone? Make the 4" iPhone cheaper and introduce a new, premium iPhone. However, I think 4.5" would be the maximum screen size I would tolerate, 4.3" would be perfect!
