if im paying 500 for a device i really wanted it had better be the top of the line product. this isnt me complaining about cores, or software its a literal integration of MEMORY in a computer. a lot of the 3gb ram devices like the note 3 can keep a TON of tabs on a browser open as well as game save-state. go on the surface 2 play a game pause it switch apps wait a couple minutes and go back and you will see it did not leave you back at the main menu u keep going right where u left off.

its almost 2014 man tablets need 2gb ram MINIMUM if its a 9 inch + device. i was okay with it on a mini retina as those users are consuers but for someone like me who is going to use the ipad for productivity apps i dont want any shortage of memory during something important.

I can leave a game and return to it where I left off on my iPhone 5 and iPad mini currently. I doubt the situation will be worse on the Air. Again iPad apps are designed to run on the iPad (normally 3 generations back). Also, I've had about 15 browser tabs open on my iPhone 5 without incident.

Does everyone realize that apps are developed based on the hardware specs of the intended platform. Keep in mind that the PS3 and 360 run far more powerful applications with 500MBs of RAM.

Well if that's the case then Apple better get on the stick because Safari is the main culprit on mine. And I don't even visit sites with video etc. just forums, news etc. but I do pay bills and shop online and it gets really tiring having it crash while I'm in the middle of entering my credit card info or posting a long post.

Frankly I don't give a rat's you-know-what how the PS3 or XBox handles it. All I care about is how my iPad functions and I've been down this road. Like I said, I'll probably pick one up. But this time I'm returning at the first crash. I'm not spending $1000 for a wrestling match. I refuse to continually reboot to release memory just so I can read CNN or Reddit.

I can honestly say that safari has been an extremely stable browser for me on iOS 7. Haven't been dealing with any crashes or performance issues. I will say that planning to return your device after the first crash is silly. My PC with 12GBs of RAM crashes periodically, often while just using the browser.

How many tabs on Safari do you guys have open to where it's crashing? the maximum number I can open on my iPhone 5 is 24 tabs, and it doesn't crash or reload pages. I haven't tried anything with multitasking.

I always get a kick out of Android fanboys who get mad when iOS devices get rave reviews.

1GB of RAM? That's intolerable. I'm putting my foot down this time. I'm only buying TWO iPads this time. That'll show 'em.

Your avatar made that post 5x funnier. :D

As always, a solid review from Anand. Has me almost thinking of waiting now as the iPad Air is basically a large screen iPhone 5S (which his review essentially confirmed).

Minus the TouchID. :p

isn't that what basically all iPads have been? haven't owned one before, just a thought from afar

Well yes :)

But typically they have received a bit of a tweak to compensate for the extra pixels being pushed. I guess I was anticipating something that would be a notch beyond the iPhone 5S hardware-wise. Not to say there is anything wrong with the iPad Air. It looks and sounds amazing. I just think that next year's iPad will have that extra bump over the iPhone 5S - as expected since technology progresses constantly - thus justifying the purchase even more (as I am "chained" to this phone for the next 1 year and 11 months).

Just my 2 cents :D

Apple also only uses a dual-core chip when the rest of the android competition is going quad-core; and yet it's wiping the floor with them in performance.

Just saying.;)

I'll be buying an iPad Air bright and early Friday morning... but no, it isn't wiping the floor with anything.

My Google Edition Galaxy S4 runs just as smooth as any iPhone 5S I've used.

I'm assuming here is where you'll say the A7 benchmarks higher than the Snapdragon 600 in my S4... yet when I tell you it had double the RAM of the iPhone 5S.. you'll say specs don't matter.

I actually took the time to read his previous post, and yes he is an Android fan. I actually like several Android devices myself, I just get tired of seeing positive reviews of iOS devices dismissed for one silly reason or the other by Android fanboys. Usually they claim the reviewer was paid by Apple.

RAM I could understand...but Touch ID and gold will never be top priorities to me

This happens everywhere. iOS fans bash Android devices too.

You think those are bad... read ANYTHING on Xbox One or PS4 and you'll see real hypocrites.

I love Android. I use a Google Edition Galaxy S4. In my opinion, I feel Android is the best phone experience currently. But I also still believe the iPad provides the best tablet experience. I have an iPad 3 right now, and am buying an iPad Air friday.

I use a Mac, but I have Windows 7 on it via Parallels that I use daily.

I just always use what I feel is best at the given time.

It's just so frustrating with all these holdbacks from Apple. RAM, Touch ID and the gold iPad.

Apple is like a lap dance. No matter how much money you put on the table, you never quite get everything.

But you keep coming back...

Does ios 7 have compressed RAM like Mavericks? Apple may be thinking that they can get away with 1gb by compressing a third of it. Still, this should really have 2gb. There is no excuse not to. 1gb can just barely hack it on my iPad 3 (showing over 500mb used with no apps open).

Base on the review by AnandTech, IOS7 also running around the same memory usage on Air with no more then 60% usage.

And I agree suck on Apple moving up to 2gb ram and how much more will a 2gb ram cost compare to 1gb?

Even with memory compression it is not really fool proof. I run mavericks on my 2011 MBA with 4GB and I could still feel the crappy low memory effect even Mavericks compress the memory and make it virtual 6GB.

you do realize in a year's time the iPhone 6 will be out right? ...
the 6th gen iPad will prolly mirror the iPhone 6's specs...lol. using your logic you'll never get an iPad.

U guys gotta realize that apple is no innovative company no more. They can only make minor upgrade each year or else they would run out of ideas. U will probably see 2GB ram when the A10 chip comes out.

It just depends on how long apple can rely on those apps/games from their store because eventually you would realize that 0.99 games will have an iap of 20 usd or more the really get ahead. Showcase games like Final Fantasy are 7.99 and that comes with crappy graphic use for console years ago.

Adding 2gb of RAM is neither an idea nor an innovation. Not adding 2gb of RAM is keeping costs down and profitability up. If you ask the stockholders, successfully maintaining a 1gb RAM spec over 3 generations of iPads is the real innovation.

Ah yes. Good point. I guess I am viewing it from my own bubble as I am married to this iPhone 5S until 2015.

And the better camera, flash and probably other things I'm forgetting. I don't really mind the worse camera and lack of TouchID but I want flash on the iPad. I likely won't use it for taking pictures but it'll no doubt come in handy as a flashlight for times when I need to look for the iPhone. :p

Staggered family plan so I've been able to get a new subsidized iPhone every year. Used my upgrade this year for the 5S. Next year, I'll give my mom the 5S and use her line to upgrade. ;)

success or not is question yet to be asked.

Stockholders wouldn't be so happy once Ipad air can't sell because customer are getting sick of apple stingy specs.

Let's make a bet. I bet iPad Air will sell like crazy even despite what you claim are stingy specs.

The revenue and the margin is the excuse....

I always find it amusing when people diss Apple for putting 1GB of RAM in their products instead of 2-3 gigs like other companies. Yet, Apple products still win in overall performance, customer satisfaction and clearly hold their value no matter how many years old they are. Try selling a Note 3 or an S4 for as much or more than you paid for two years from now. You're lucky if you get half.
I sold my launch day 32GB 4S with a faulty home button for $350.

Maybe there are power concerns with 2GB of ram. Youd think the extra specs would make the spechores happy.

people are going to be itching to upgrade in just 6 months

I hope so, planned obsolescence is a strength of Apples business plan. It's but one of many reasons I invest in their stock. They have billions stashed offshore that proves the brilliant money making business plan they maintain.
