No. Do you want to bet, or are you purposely trying to tick people off by giving opposites?

Normally I try don't tick people off. I just really believe/hope for an iPad with retina this year. I think te current ipad2 was an interim release to compensate for the memory weakness of iPad 1; but retina was not ready.
So it will be released later this year to stay (far) ahead of the competitors.

You know, I love how all the people say "no, it's impossible, Apple won't do it.". Blah blah blah. Just like everyone said Apple will always release an iPhone in June/July. And yet here we are....

'Nuff said.

Yes, you're right. A slight delay is exactly the same as introducing a new model 6 months before its expected.

Apple has everything to gain and nothing to lose by introducing a new model this fall. What, people are going to be upset that a new model was released 6 months after they bought their own model? Uh, get over it. Apple, and every other manufacturer, refreshes products all the time. Not sure why the iPad is so off limits. Sure, with phones, it's different because of the very nature of contract-based cell phone plans here in the U.S. But it just makes a whole lot of sense to release a new ipad this fall.

I'm still set on the February-March timeframe. Don't worry though, you'll see a Retina iPad soon enough. Hey, I'm hoping for one too.

I don't think Apple has everything to gain over that. Releasing too rapidly (in a 6 month period) seems far too quick.

I could see 8 months as making sense. 10 months being realistic. 12 months being about as long as they'd wait (unless if there was a very good technological reason... something they would be waiting on for an extra month or two... kind-of like the Air waited on specific ULV SB processors).

6 months is too soon in my opinion. But that's my opinion. :)

I've seen good points made on both sides as to whether or not it'll come out before spring. Having said that, it seems like a lot of the people who are saying it's "impossible" for it to come out in the fall are just iPad 2 owners/recent buyers who don't want it to, so they won't feel left behind (even if they won't admit it).

It's true, 6-8 months is a short time to release a new product, but it doesn't seem so far fetched to me considering that the iPad 2 was a relatively minor update. It seemed like maybe Apple was planning to make the 2 retina, but couldn't have it ready in time as others have said. They didn't want to wait more than a year after the original iPad release to come out with an updated model though obviously, even if they couldn't do everything they wanted with it yet.

In addition, if Apple moved the iPhone release to match it with their September iPod event, after years of June updates, why would it be so crazy to do the same with the iPad and update all their iOS devices at once? If they did update the iPad in the fall, I'm sure it wouldn't mean they're moving to a 6 month cycle either.

I'm not claiming to know either way. I'm just throwing some ideas out there and trying to make the point that it really isn't so crazy for them to break the pattern and release a new model 6-8 months later, just because it's a shorter time frame. If you look at the buyer's guide, you'll see Apple has changed their release schedules of various products many times in the past, often creating shorter or longer periods between updates than expected.

There is no way Apple could have come out with anything like the iPhone's display for the iPad 2 at the same price point. And I wouldn't count on the iPad 3 having it in the spring either.

Well if it were 2048x1536 (263 ppi) like recent rumors have suggested, it wouldn't be quite as high res as the iPhone's 326 ppi. Still a high enough resolution to market as retina, especially since you generally view it from further away than a phone. But who knows, maybe only the higher priced versions would be retina at first.

Pretty sure it'll be hard to distinguish the difference between 263 ppi and 326 ppi :p

People tend to hold iPhones closer to their eyes than an iPad (at least I think so), and viewing distance to PPI ratio is also important. It sort of evens out in a lot of scenarios.

I think I'd be impressed with 263ppi in an iPad anyways. Can't exactly call that a disappointment lol. :D

Yeah I'd be very happy with that resolution, and it makes sense since it doubles the dimensions of the current display. I was just saying in response to poloponies that a 263 ppi 9.7" should be cheaper to produce than a 326 ppi, making it more likely to appear in an iPad in the near future.

That was a typo. They wanted to write: 2011: year of 2 iPad

Alternative explanation is the iPad 2 Pro. Because of Retina they increase the price, means make a different line. Maybe with 3G and CDMA in one to avoid further split of system line.

Please,let me dream ...

I could see it happening, but only if they were waiting on tech for the iPad 3. They'd have to release an iPad 2 Pro by the end of the year.

The only reason would be that they are delaying the iPad 3 until late 2012, and need a gap filler.

I doubt they'll release an "iPad 2 Pro" though.

All I am trying to say is that Apple can and will do what it wants to do. Historically they do not always keep to a one year cycle. And it would be more than 6 months by the way if they released it in time for the holiday season...

I read The Daily every day, and there was a story just this morning that the iPad 2 is still said to be updated in September. The rumors are not as dead as some of us would like to believe.

Apple will do what Apple does. It is financially impossible for me to buy another iPad this year, but I will sit on the sidelines and cheer Apple on. Refreshing the iPad and kickstarting sales AGAIN this year and at a time when we're approaching the holiday season will only be good for them and will bolster their tablet market share. If you enjoy using iPads, this is a good thing for you whether you own a 2 or not. The more people buy these things, the more developer support you will get.

Personally, I don't believe there will be a new iPad this fall. If there is, I can't buy one, but I will most likely upgrade next year. In the meantime, yay Apple. Keep those crappy Android tablets from taking over.

What may happen is a new iPad with 7 inch display. There is a huge market for smaller tablets, and RIM Playbook is serving that market well. Palm, Samsung, etc. are about to drop their prices below iPad 2 to gain some leverage, and Apple is well aware of that.
A cheaper iPad with smaller screen will take the market by storm again and everybody will be talking that Steve "did it again"
Personally, I'd buy 7 inch iPad next day... The original iPad is way too big for me (my personal opinion based on my high mobility)

PlayBooks aren't selling all that well.

This. ^

Personally, I wouldn't mind a larger iPad. :D

FINALLY back online and managed to read though all these message...

Its been very interesting reading what you all have to say, and the latest rumor from the other day now points to 2012... I really don't think I can wait that long, been waiting since a few months after the first iPad.

Come September 17th I will be the owner of an iPad2... and just hope that nothing gets release later this year. :p

I'm not really convinced that's the case. There is a market for smaller tablets but I don't think it's really that big with everyone starting to carry smartphones around.

Both PlayBook and the first Samsung Galaxy Tab seemed to disappoint in terms of sell through(sales to consumers), and we haven't heard much about HTC Flyer or the Dell Streak 7 doing well either. Nook Color has been selling decently but I'd think that's more because of its low price due to a different business model where B&N isn't looking to make money off the hardware.

They might gain immediately, but they may lose in the long run. What they lose is consumer confidence. Meaning people buy feeling confident that what they just paid a ridiculous amount for now isn't going to be outdated in months. iPad 2 just came out in the spring, and already there's talk of a whole new model that will obsolete it. Talk all you want about how "if it works fine for you, it's not obsolete," but when you could have waited a few months and gotten the latest and greatest, that's not very comforting. Apple has been pretty consistent about going at least a year between significant updates. Break that pattern and they risk upsetting customers.

And, really, what is the need? They are so in the lead right now, they don't need to add anything to the iPad this early. Save a retina display for next year as the next big must-have thing. What would they add next year besides storage and next year's processor? They're already doing victory laps around the competition. Is there a need to beat the competition in a victory lap?
