I like to think of the iPhone as Catholicism and Android phones as Prostestantism, and in NO way am I saying any of these things is better than the other. With the iPhone, it's the only one of its kind, like Catholicism. There may be a few branches (2G, 3G, 3G)(Roman, Byzantine, Armenian), but they are all essentially the same. The Android phones run the gambit (Droid, EVO, HD2, Incredible) just like Protestantism (Lutheran, Methodist, Presbyterian). You shouldn't compare the iPhone to the Android phones in number for the same reason as Catholics versus Protestants, both of the later will obviously outnumber the formers in just the number of different kinds that are around

Why do apple fanboys are so offensive when they see an Android? Get a grip!

Who needs to get a grip? You're the one with the exclamation point.

Why do guys, like you and the OP, choose to post in the iPhone forums when you don't own and aren't interested in an iPhone? You're looking for an Evo or Droid if I'm not mistaken. Whatever it is, you haven't been posting asking about the iPhone, at least not in recent history.

Does this mean I have to go buy an Android phone??? :( :p

Not surprising for a few reasons that have already been stated.

1. Only one maker of the iPhone vs. several for Android phones.
2. Android phones are on all of the carriers here in the US, while the iPhone is only on at&t.
3. People are waiting for the new iPhone to appear in a couple of months, and Android is releasing great phones like the Incredible, Droid, Nexus One, etc.

Hearing these reports is as annoying as Apple talking about how many phones they've sold. I don't care. Is this supposed to make me want an Android? I mean competition is cool and all but I don't care who is winning.

Also, many carriers of android phones have buy one get one free deals with android phones. no such deals (at least with AT&T) exist

These were sales for 1Q2010, before some Android phones showed up (and/or they showed up towards the end).

The Verizon Droid was no doubt the biggest seller, because of advertising. The N1, Eris and things like the Backflip which came at the last month were probably minor contributors.

3. People are waiting for the new iPhone to appear in a couple of months, and Android is releasing great phones like the Incredible, Droid, Nexus One, etc.

None of the Incredible or EVO sales will be counted until 2Q2010 is over. That will likely end up making it two quarters with Android ahead.

Note that of course they're not actually "free". They're half price (because you still have to buy one at full price) and require an expensive two year voice and data contract on two lines... along with the desire for both parties to own the same kind of smartphone.

Numbers are fun to watch, but all that really counts is if you like your phone and its service. For example, relatively few Pres and Pixis were sold, but their owners like them a lot.

sold more in the U.S.

But how is the Android vs. iPhone market share doing Internationally in countries where the iPhone isn't locked to a less-than-majority carrier?

One report says the iPhone has a 72% smartphone share in Japan.
