Should def have some sort of notification symbol in the status bar on top to remind you that you have a notification waiting.

In terms of imessage, I like the fact I can now text my wife and kids (youngest having only an iPad) when I'm overseas without paying the ridiculous overseas rates (WiFi option).
As far as notifications, how do you know something is pending now? Are you seriously saying without an icon in the status bar you won't know? Your lock screen will be the first clue bird. If actively using the device, the animated notification at the top is your second clue bird. Finally all those badges should clue you in as well. Alas, if none of these indicators clue you in...just make a quick swipe down FROM ANYWHERE and check.
I guess a small icon would be nice.

What they're saying is that if they are doing something and a notification comes in and they don't tend to it right away they may forget about it and there is nothing to remind them of that notification. So say you're surfing the web or reading something and a text message comes in, you may not want to stop what you're doing right at that moment to reply to that text. So you choose to continue doing what you were doing. Problem is without a constant notification, you may forget you have a text you need to respond to.
