In a society where people seem to think they are defined by what devices they own, if one person or one company has absolute control over those devices, they define the people who own them. What ever happen to think different? It’s more like think the same. Trying to protect everyone and give us all the best experience seems to be a parallel plot line to the movie the Truman Show, and we know how that ended.

Android=think spyware.

With freedom comes responsibility.

Having a more free ecosystem means users will have to exercise more responsibility in what they add to their devices. I'd gladly take this over the Apple model.

I won't! Apple controlling their store is just like Target controlling theirs... or WalMart... or Macy's... or whoever! Do you seen porn mags and deceptive products at Target? No. Because they filter.

Just like EVERY major store.

Yet here is Google saying "go at it" and it's going to cause problems in the end. When it's all said and done I can PROMISE you that Google will eventually be forced to control their marketplace just like everyone else does, because, let's be real here, people who sell products are not always honest. They are looking for an easier way to make money, that's it. And if some have to push their morals aside to do it, they will. It's human nature.

100% free uncontrolled markets = Garage sales. And do you buy all of your goods and services at garage sales? NO.

Then buy one and enjoy it. I for one will stay with something that works, and for the most part give me what I need. I rather leave the wild wild west attitude to others.

Ooops, I meant Gawker. I don't even know why I remember Gawker's one, not the point.

I wanted to add Apple's objection on the jailbreaking being an excemption to DMCA.

A cease and desist is not the same thing as a civil lawsuit. Companies (not just Apple) post them all the time when somebody wants to threaten a suit if they do not stop an activity. Apple felt that Gawker was trying to induce NDA violations. They are perfectly normal legal behaviors. And again, Apple never sued Gawker.

Your second article is pure speculation since Apple has not made any effort to sue jailbreakers. They have condemned them and refused service on such phones which is their right to to. Again, not analogous.

If you buy any computer from manufacturers like Dell, HP, even if it ships with Linux, MS charges full license fee. Now they even made a deal with HTC, so even if HTC sells an android phone, MS gets a cut.

Is this true? Site a source please.

this is specially troublesome

http://blogs.forbes.com/firewall/20...letes-and-downplays-botnet-demo-android-apps/

Security researcher creates botnet for Android, tricks 300 users to download the app

if Oberheide hadn't presented his research at the SummerCon hacker conference there's no reason to believe that Google would have been aware of the existence of this rogue app in the first place.

Android should NEVER be allowed in the Enterprise.

But won't that be fun when they do. Corp. for the most part will not make that mistake, for most Blackberry is the only thing they allow to start with.

Android Suckas

at long last there is public outcries at how crappy android market is. even their websites bits. google needs to show some initiative and make some great apps themselves and start a development program. google + android = nightmare..... gmail was in beta for five years and still doesn't work completely.

I wish one of these so called "tech journalists" like Walt Mossberg would really challenge Jobs on this "curation" nonsense. Like what were the reasons for "curating" the Google Voice out of Apple Store.. or WiFi Sync app.. or iPad Widget Apps..

I take it you didn't watch any of the D8 Steve Jobs interview with the EXACT scenario you just laid out happened? Catch it online, Walt and some other lady were asking the questions.

+1- people back in the wild west didn't live long either.:p

I know this is MacRumors and all, but the blind Apple worshiping + trashing anything even remotely competing with Apple seriously makes me want to puke.

Guess what? I have flash on my phone and it has worked ****ing flawlessly so far. Sucks for you.

Do you need someone to hold your hair back for you.

Your on a Apple fan forum, why so surprised?

I bet my idea of "Flawless" is much different than yours.

Android has become the Windows of Mobile phones. insecure, crappy, inconsistent.

EXACTLY!

iPhone OS is to Mac OS as Android OS is to Windows! The very same things that make Android OS so compelling (to some) --the openness, the free-wheeling distribution of apps, the "hacker" spirit fostered by Google-- are the very same things that make Android OS a security nightmare.

No thank you!

what always kills me is when people just parrot the sayings of everyone else "oh, I'd rather have an Open platform....Apple is too closed...I don't like a closed system....". Yet when you call them on it, they can't tell you what it is they want to do that they just can't do on that "closed" system or why it's so bad other than "it's closed".

Actually, this is an Apple RUMORS site. And Apple actively seeks to stop rumors about their unreleased products.

So a GOOD Apple Fanboy shouldn't be on THIS site. :) :)

Guess what? I have Flash DISABLED on all of my Macs and I don't miss it a single bit! Web pages load faster and I'm subjected to far far fewer ads! It has worked ****ing flawlessly so far!

Here are my feelings on the Android vs iOS deal.

I just do not see Android becoming a serious threat to iOS until Google starts releasing software updates that are compatible with all Android phones. I do not understand why a customer wants to buy a phone from Samsung, Motorola, HTC, or some other 3rd party manufacturer who does not support/update the software of their hardware for at least a couple years.

For example, when Froyo was coming out I could not believe the articles that I was reading about what phones would get Froyo, and what phones were left behind without Froyo support. Yes you can hack the Android phones and have them unofficially support Froyo, but that type of support is buggy and breaks the warranty. At least with Apple, the original iPhone was supported with iOS updates for 3 major revisions (and 3 years).

I believe Google is going to have to make Android the Windows 95/XP/7 of mobile phone OS's. Google needs to provide driver support and install support for the customer to download and install the latest Android OS from them, and not rely on the manufacturer to port the update. Why would the customer want to buy a Droid Incredible when in 6 months to a year from now in might not support the next major release of Android OS? The 3rd party manufacturers Samsung, Motorola, HTC, etc probably do not want to do the port of the next major release because they have a new phone they would rather sell you with the latest Android OS anyway.

Until Google provides the OS updates and the Android App Market improves itself from privacy and piracy issues, I can not see the Android platform gain dominance.

Apple has done a great job of usability, intuitiveness, etc, and with that comes some lack of freedom, but for the vast majority of users (especially people using a phone) that is what they want. Not most people are techies, that want to deal with virus'. I know I am a lot happier visiting my parents now, no more wasting time to fix their PC, since they switched to MAC.

As lame as it sounds time cost something, and Apples moto of "it just works" is worth it to me and a lot of other people.

I always thought the same way. Thats why MR never get invited to apple's events. and MR loves Giz for some reason. Where as Engadget is opposite, its owners loves Apple, but all its memebers are anti-apple.

haha totally agree.

It should also be noted that apple's killswitch does not remove the app from your device or even disable it, it only turns off location services so the app cannot spy on you.

Google's killswitch just takes your app away.

Yeah, nobody can image how powerful google is .

Then you should take it. For most people, however, a curated app store will provide a more secure, more enjoyable and more valuable experience. People who choose the Apple model are exercising their freedom to realize the most value for their money. They are not infosec or technical experts, so it is in their best economic interest to allow others, who are experts, to do that work for them.

People like yourself might prefer more of a hobbyist or enthusiast type of product, where you are left to find and put the parts together -- or even make some of the parts -- yourself. It's great that you have that choice. But just as in most other markets, the hobbyists are a small minority and the products that work best for them, which are always inherently more "free", are an inferior choice for the non-hobbyists.

Even Apple have the ability to kill app remotely, but with "great powers comes great responsibility", so apple is yet to use that. Only Amazon and Google used the kill switch so far (MS Phone 7 series will have kill switch too, i bet MS will use it too). People were so angry with apple just having that kill switch.
