I would love it if Apple would buy Newton and offer it as another email client for Mac.
There is no real alternative for Newton, the way it works, behaves and looks.

I am sure Apple would rather avoid anything to do with the name "Newton". It's blasphemy these days to bring it up.

Would be sorta like them admitting it was actually a good idea...I think they want to be disassociated with the past. It's kinda ironic given the name of the mail client though...

I think Apple admits Newton was a good idea. They seem pretty proud of it, and I’ve seen interviews where high-ups at Apple have said it was the inspiration for a lot of what eventually became iPhone.

I remember it being one out of many Sculley-era failures and was one of the many which almost killed Apple until Steve came back and killed it and started on the iMac and iPod...

In my past times with the Low End Mac forum when I was playing with Sculley-era Macs, the Newton was a bad word. One never mentioned that device that-shall-not-be-named there. Or dare spell "Mac" as MAC, mac, or an iPod touch as "iTouch" and not risk a ban.

Ok. But don’t project those feelings onto Apple. Nobody at Apple seems all that hung up about such things.

They used to be. I'm actually quite surprised that attitude has changed. Guess Steve dying had a lot to do with that one.

I think the biggest loss to the Android world is that the Pixel is now the only phone (as far as I'm aware) that you can get stock Android on. Honestly that was a big draw card for me to check out the PH-1. Pixel phones have gotten alot better, but more options are always better.

WebOS was ruined by HP buying it out and cancelling it for some unforseen reason. WebOS was actually quite ahead of its time and most of Android 9/10's gesture nav comes from WebOS. Imagine what it could have become?

It was only ahead of its time in terms of the card-based user interface, which was pretty amazing I must admit. The underlying OS code, however, was a complete mess. The prospects for third party app support were dismal because it was virtually impossible to write an app with any level of sophistication that would perform acceptably on this platform. Android and iOS already had a sophisticated development environment and vibrant app stores. So, WebOS was doomed from the start, which is why HP dumped it and now just it’s the OS for LG TVs.

WebOS died when the latest version of Android was 2.3 Gingerbread (unless you count Honeycomb which was tablet-only). I hardly consider that version of Android "sophisticated" although it remains my favorite since it was easier to root and ROM. But at that time it wasn't sure of what it wanted to be--there weren't even Google Play Services yet.

WebOS we will never know what it could have become. However, there are third party developers still around and a third party app store to replace the now-defunct stock version.

If I'm not mistaken, one of the original WebOS developers is on board with Android and that might be why version 9 and 10 resemble the card based platform in regards to the app switcher.

To announce that you've never heard of Andy Rubin is wild. He's the original creator of Android, bought by Google, that little OS used on nearly every other mobile phone. Not Gates, Jobs or Musk level 'famous', but a tech industry name that's as common-knowledge as Steve Ballmer.

Maybe so, but I still have never heard his name prior to this thread.
