Now newbies will likely try to get around this rule by posting sale offers as replies in other people's existing for sale threads. I wonder if those will be deleted.

If they're reported, those posts will probably be deleted.

Good move - MR is a community, so folks who have stuck around and helped make it that way are its primary audience.

Hope this cuts down on the MR Newbie six-posts-in-a-row-to-three-different-forums "Mac software CHEAP, come check out Dreamweaver MX for $10!!!!!" posts and other related items.

it worked out great for the political forums, and although there is much more traffic in the Marketplace, i can see this turning out well too, great idea guys

Now how about the "No Bumping Your Own Ad" rule?
That's already a rule.
How about a sticky thread on WTB's for newbies -- one post only, reply by PM?
That's a very clever idea and might be a good compromise.

Edit: Would sellers really wade through a Want To Buy thread, which would get longer and longer over time, looking for people who wanted to buy what they are selling? It would be hard to search such a thread for keywords and know which posts are still current.

Fantastic rule. The marketplace should be for MR members to sell stuff to other MR members, not eBay for free... :)

Well this kinda sucks for me. But for everyone else its a great idea. I was going to try to sell some stuff today but then I couldn't post anything in marketplace. So now I need to start posting some more. I'm only on 51 or something. A lot to go. Oh well one less now.

Duff-Man says.....great idea....should cut down on some of the garbage. I still think that "feeler" threads should not be allowed either though - either your item is for sale or it isn't....do your own homework as far as pricing goes.....oh yeah!

Definitely a good move; I've tended to steer clear of the marketplace due to my own paranoia, but I'll definitely keep a close eye on it now.

I agree 100% on this one, I mean its not like putting a FS is an absolute commitment to sell anyway, the seller can pull out of a deal as easily as any buyer when its just posted on the forums, I also hate how feelers sometimes magically become FS threads or they have to make another brand new thread to say ... hmm this was worth just about what I expected so now i'm selling it even tho we spent three pages talking about it already

hmmm... i don't mind the occasional bump... maybe once every week or so... but when someone signs off at night after bumping at 10pm, then bumps again in the morning at 9am...

Or when someone bumps like every hour or so.

Yeah...OMG, why hasn't my used 2005FPW for $250 more than retail cost sold yet? ;) :D

Seriously, another forum I visit has a rule that allows bumping, but not frequently. I think either 1x / day or 2x / day? In any event, the posters there seem to follow this rule and it works out. But for most people on MR, the current system seems to work, with most people doing not-quite-bumping-but-definitely-bump-esque replies to their own threads with more info, and relatively few flagrant offenders.

unless I'm mistaken, contributing to the site should override the 100 post minimum - but I'd need someone who's got under 100 posts, paid up, and wanting to post a thread to let me know if that's right.

*crickets chirping*

Very glad with the change. Had a problem like this at the other forum I hang out at, and they took it a step further, and made the entire for sale forum invisible to non-members. It's a car forum, and you'd have 1st posters trying to sell a car, never to return, even when there was a list of interested buyers... very annoying.

Wow thanks

This is great especaly (sp???) becuase I should be in the marketplace for a used mac pretty soon... and I was only planing on bying from a semi-known member, with this new rule I really dont have to nitpick again :D

Honoured more in the breach than in the observance, methinks.

IF there were no bumping, then the ads would not be jockeying for position all the time and there would be less reason to bump in the first place.

Dunno how the system would enforce a "wait 48 hours" or "wait one week" before you bump your own post rule - how would it distinguish between a bump and a legit answer to another poster's question?

Bump posts that have no meaningful content are always removed, if they get reported. Otherwise, we might or might not spot them.

Bumping to say "still available" or "I really need to sell this" is considered the same as bumping by saying "Bump" (none of them allowed) but lowering the price, even by a small amount, and posting the new price is permitted.

Not everyone follows the spirit of the rule, of course. Luckily, it's usually not hard to tell whether or not a given post is meaningful. As you point out, no automated "48 hour timer" system could work since BBS software doesn't have the intelligence to distinguish bump posts, so we're stuck with the human touch.

If some but not many bumps get through, it's a minor inconvenience to other threads, and probably rarely if ever the cause of nonsales that might otherwise have been successful.

Perhaps the Marketplace Forum page should show 140 threads by default, instead of 40 threads, so there would be less competition for the front page of the forum! Bookmark that link and you can see taller Marketplace pages anytime you like.
