well its tuesday after WWDC and nothing so far..

Like I said, tomorrow or next tuesday are more likely, though we if see anything today, there's about 30-45 min. left in the window. I'm mountain, and a lot of Apple updates are about 10-11:30 MDT, 9-10:30 Pacific.

When did you buy? Why didn't you wait for the update? And what's perplexing about it? Companies generally don't pre-announce things, for the obvious reason that they can't afford to kill sales on the current model.

Right after WWDC. I didn't wait because I have been waiting for quite a while. In my head, WWDC was the deadline. I needed a new computer, WWDC did not reveal any new updates, so I stuck to my guns and ordered.

I guess if something is updated within the next 2 weeks, then (from what I understand) I will be eligible for the new update or some other form of compensation. Do I have to keep the box unopened to qualify?

I guess the only thing to do is wait and see.

a. good for you. like you said, it's a great machine that will last.

b. for me I can afford to wait till iMac and/or Mac Pro/Display updates. I bought a refurb 1.66 Core Duo Mini in Oct (w/ Superdrive - early 2006 top end model) as a holdover till Leopard which at the time was expected in the "Spring" and figured I would get the iMac revision that coincided. I desperately needed to upgrade my 6 1/2 yr old G4 450 'sawtooth' PowerMac. The Mini was $649 and I got a $100 printer rebate. So I have that luxury. I also have a relative who will buy the Mini off me when I upgrade who doesn't need anything more than web, email, and front row (will actually be using it with wireless kb and mm on a flat screen tv, so it doubles as a DVD player too.)

But like I said, no credible source was expecting anything at WWDC. If you can wait until the end of the month, I would have done that. If you needed it now, then just prepare yourself for when they get updated soon.

I think there's like a 14 day window to return stuff if it isn't a custom config, though there may be a restocking fee (Dell has one now, don't remember about Apple).

The video card counts at BTO - custom order. The wireless I/O package does not. It is a standard option availalbe in the stores. The box the base system with both wireless and wired sets priced accordingly so that people can walk into an Apple Store and buy either. That was new as of the Core 2 Duo iMacs last September.

thanks. it seems by claiming the computer is defective is the only way to get apple to take it back. seems like a lot of hassle just to be eligible for a product update.

Was going to go for the 24" 2.16Ghz iMac with 7600GT + 500GB HD, but selecting the 500GB puts it out to 7-10 business days rather than 3 business days with the 7600GT and 750GB or Std 250GB keeps it at 3 days...

Might as well wait until next Tuesday in the hope of SR/VRAM/HD upgrades. Whatever happens, got to get one before end of June, G4 on last legs...

You're NOT eligible for a product upgrade. There is no such thing. If you want the new system, wait for it and cancel your current order (if you can). If you want it right now, then just make do with the fact that it the same money will buy better specs in (probably) a few weeks time.

This is the confusing part. A buddy of mine bought an iMac. There was an update soon after her purchase. She called Apple (don't know what she said to them) and they credited her account ~$500. If I remember correctly, they gave her a couple of options 1. exchange for the new model 2. store credit to compensate.

What program or policy was that? Is that just good customer service/relations? I understand I'm not eligible for anything, but I keep reading all these posts about getting in on upgrades shortly after purchasing. A lot of it sounds like more hassle than its worth.

There is some validity to that. People often do get rebates/discounts when new products come out. Refurbs and discontinued/outdated specs models are sometimes available in stores and mostly through outlets like maczone and macmall at discounts of several hundred dollars. If a new iMac came out tomorrow, the refurb prices as well as the old stock on macmall would need to reflect any pricing changes as well as the fact that the specs are older. For example should the $1,499 20" get updated and a price drop to $1,299, then refurbs and old stock need to be less than the new price, not just the old one. Given all that, if a new one comes out, I would call Apple to see what sort of $$ you can get back. But until it does, enjoy your new Mac. After all you made the decision to order it. Don't 2nd guess that, just use it.

gaelan - I just ordered mine from amazon yesterday, and will be getting it today. I had the same idea as you - If I didn't hear anything yesterday I would not wait any longer. I really don't care if they update within the next couple of weeks, I am going to enjoy my first apple computer. I bought the stock 24" config. UPS should be delivering it to my door tonight :D.

As far as the return policy (Price Protection) from apple - this is what their site states...

"Should Apple reduce its price on any shipped product within 10 calendar days of shipment, you may contact Apple Sales Support at 1-800-676-2775 to request a refund or credit of the difference between the price you were charged and the current selling price. To receive the refund or credit you must contact Apple within 14 business days of shipment."

So if it does happen I would try apple, I won't be able to do this since I bought from amazon. I did save about $200 because of the no-tax and rebate, which is close to what the price drop would be if a new model came out anyway.

After the iMacs were revised last Sept, I talked to an ex-coworker at Apple (I used to work there) and he was going to order me a 24" iMac with one of his discounts (they get a limited # per year). After talking to him on and off for 3weeks, he kept telling me he would call me to order it when he had a chance. He had to do it at work. After not hearing from for another 3 weeks I gave up waiting after leaving several messages and ordered my refurb 'holdover' Mini. It shipped that night. The next morning he called me to order my 24" iMac. At first I was bummed out, but I have been happy using it and will look forward to getting the next iMac revision. Anyway, that's my version of 'the next day' even though I wasn't burned by any spec changes.

I highly doubt any updated systems will be out between now and the iPhone launch.

However, I think that we will see new machines coming out in mid- to late-August. Why? Because if Leopard comes out in October, then the new machines can ship with vouchers for Leopard at that point. A new machine released now will not do as well since we know that the new OS will not be arriving for four months, but if the OS is due within 30-60 days, a new machine and a voucher should enjoy much better sales.

This is all speculation of course, based on no special information, but I expect to see a scenario like this happen.

I tend to agree with King here. While I've never really speculated about when updates might arrive before, I would think not before late Aug, Sept, Oct time line. The current models run Tiger just beautifully, and most people want to upgrade when a new OS comes out, so I'd say much closer to the release of Leopard. But I've been known to be wrong before so who knows :D
