A) I don't think Apple will have two iPads of the same name. The iPad Pro is a more powerful iPad when compared to any other iPad. The iPad that will be announced today will either carry the name Air 3 or something else.

B) Currently the Air 2 is the most powerful 9.7' iPad. It carries an A8X 1.5Ghz Tri-Core CPU, 2GB of RAM. It is very capable of everything the iPad Pro does. The only upgrade Apple will make is clocking the CPU to 2.2Ghz W/4GB of RAM. The iPad Air 2 has every feature the Pro has. The only selling point of today's iPad will be Apple pencil support and Apple's Smart keyboard 2.0 with hopefully now has a backlit.

Anyone else considering buying the 12.9" Pro instead, if the rumors about the 9.7" are true? The initial sticker shock of $799 deterred me initially, but now that there are some discounts we are talking about paying ~$50 more for more screen real estate. I should be able to recoup that in a couple years when I trade it in.

Then one thing that worries me is how some of my favorite apps (tweetbot) have yet to be updated for the larger screen.

I was thinking the same thing. We'll know in an hour or so...

Right now a 32 GB iPad Air is $449. An upgraded iPad Air 3 would've cost the same.
The 9.7" iPad Pro (32 GB) will be $599.
So Apple just raised the prices of their new 9.7" tablets just because of the Pro name.
Yea...has nothing to do with the new timing chip, the ridiculous amount of power the a9x has, the new panel assembly that has a variable refresh rate, this is more than your usual spec bump.

But yea, they just changed the name so that's the only difference.

I really don't understand how engineers don't go on rampages more often, the amount of glossed over work they do in the eyes of the public is absurd.

Each year they did the same kind of upgrades and the price stayed the same.

This year, on top of the regular updates, they're going to add new screen tech for Pencil support, label the iPad as "Pro" because of that, and charge more. For someone who doesn't care about the Pencil this is just like an iPad Air 3 which costs more. It's as simple as that.

Well boo hoo that you don't care about the pencil, that doesn't change the TSOC chip and new display tech that went into this.

Get what you need, you're owed nothing, especially not a lesser upgrade to save a few bucks.

I already have the bigger iPad Pro and the Pencil

Don't forget the smart connector.

Well good for you.

But the overall tone of your replies in this thread is that Apple is unjustified in raising the price. If that impression is erroneous, then please correct me.

For those that think this way...then don't buy it. The earth will still keep spinning, etc.

That seems harsh. So what if Apple put a different screen or timing chip in? They put a screen with 4x the pixels in the ipad 3 and didn't charge more for it. That was a more justifiable technical jump than anything they put in the ipad pro.

smart connector? Just a way to sell you accessories so should be a free cost to me because it makes apple money. Same with anything pencil enabling.

The only meaningful changes are the slight increase in storage to 32GB as base, and the ram (assuming it is 4GB). Hardly worth $100.

They are *clearly* charging you more because they are positioning this as a laptop replacement, nothing more.

For anyone that simply wanted an ipad air 3, there is no option. The ipad air 2 is 18 months old now - will there even be an air 3 in the fall? Right now they have a $200 gap between the air 2 and the new pro which seems too big.

I think that Apple is positioning things for a price drop on the 9.7 Pro in the Fall. (at least that's my hope)

From a supply chain perspective...no it wasn't. Apple had a display partner ready to go in manufacturing that display.

For the iPad Pro Apple had to engineer a whole new timing chip that also incorporated the functionality of Pencil. These two things are the equivalent of picking a somewhat tailored to their specs part off the shelf, verses completely engineering a timer chip with an insane amount of bandwidth.

These are not the same thing, and pretending otherwise means you don't understand how technology evolves or more likely, you don't care and just want to demand things.

That said, is apple taking a huge margin from this? Yes. But that's been their business model since day one.

These complaints always happen in some way after a keynote. My iPad Pro is still the same it was yesterday. The complaints are kind of silly.
