My brother got his 1st Mac today and it was the entry iMac and it has SL installed. Now I was actually a little upset because he is new to this and I was excited for him. I downloaded Lion for him, got him set up and all is good. I was mad that setting up took longer than is should and IMO it wasn't good for a new user who is new to Apple.

I guess I don't understand what the problem is. Since you have about 10 days left to return it, you should do so, and then get one with the Lion wallpaper on the box. Then you will have an iMac with a fresh version of Lion, not one that overwrote SL. Everyone is happy then.

It's about customer experience. How long has Lion been out now and my brother still got SL on his new iMac?
Yes we could have re-boxed it, drove back, wasted gas that wasn't needed if it had Lion on it. I didn't mind helping him also, but the set up and downloading Lion took way longer than it should be to set up a new Mac also.

I recently installed Windows 7 on a computer. It took 45 minutes to install and then over three hours to download and install updates. Installing Lion took me less than an hour to download and install, including updates. Lion is easy I don't get all the drama people have dealing with it ...

It hasn't been out that long. Did you expect Apple to ship all of their unsold imacs back to them so they could load Lion on them? Don't be silly. When Windows 7 came out, did all the pc companies request their computers be shipped back to them so they could replace XP with 7? Of course not. The consumer needs
to be responsible. Only a fool would buy something without knowing what they just bought. All a smart consumer needs to do is just a little research on what they buy. They would know to ask if Lion was installed or not.

the 2 sales people we met did not even know what sandy bridge is or what it is for ....they maybe thought about sand castles according their facial impressions
Why would they? AFAIK, Apple has never referred to processor microarchitecture code names before, so even if they literally knew everything Apple said about a Mac, they wouldn't know that.

actually when 1st Vista came out, I couldn't find an XP PC anywhere and I called many places (and Vista wasn't even out for a week at the time). Knowing how Vista ended, you know why I was looking for XP.

It was an hour I didn't have. I got it running with no problem, and I also know Macs better than my brother so I knew what to do. All I am saying is for a NEW Apple customer this isn't good.

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 4_3_5 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/533.17.9 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/5.0.2 Mobile/8L1 Safari/6533.18.5)

I see both sides here. Apple are proud of their customer service (rightly so) but this does detract from that.

Would it really be that difficult for Apple to issue a leaflet for computers with SL Pre-installed? Or provide the Lion USB stick? It is far easier (and safer) to install Lion before starting to use the computer.

Does a first time user really know what the picture on the screen should be?

I know Apple can do no wrong in some people's eyes but in this case I do think they could have done a little better without recalling every computer and installing Lion. First impressions count for a lot and this is something that could harm that vital experience

Hope you got the trackpad upgrade because lion is useless with the magic mouse. Just return it for one preinstalled. There's no restocking fee. The photo and specs on the box should've told you 10.6 was preinstalled on it.

Personally speaking if I had to use a trackpad instead of a mouse then I wouldn't own a Mac - ghastly bit of kit, lacks accuracy or feel.

I found Vista to be fine, never had any issues and with SP's that is still the case. There again I know a little about computers.

As for the time it takes to install W7 along with updates - well I guess if OSX was as widely used as Windows then the problems would likely be the same - not Windows fault but those carrying out nefarious activities.

Opps, guess I am an idiot to not know all of apple's box artwork?

Sorry, late reply.

No, you're not an idiot, but you joined these forums over 4 years ago, so you've been here longer than I am. I would have assumed you wouldn't be a stranger here so why didn't you do the research before rushing out to buy one? There had been several threads exactly about this issue when Lion came out. I, along with others, even posted pictures of our just purchased Macs with the Lion wallpaper on the packaging to prove that some models did indeed in fact come shipped with Lion pre-installed.

You don't even need to visit here daily to find that information out even. Just search.

First of all, why is it "far safer" to have Lion pre-installed? Are you just making this up? Where is your evidence on this? How in the world is it less safer to use the computer? In what way? Are you talking about general security or that the user may actually screw something so easy as going to the Mac App store and clicking "purchase" on the Lion buy button?

Did you also ever consider that many users actually would prefer to have both Lion and Snow Leopard, just in case Lion doesn't suit them? Which, by the way, is not an uncommon topic here on the forums, since there are a handful of unsatisfied Lion users on these forums that have already downgraded back to SL.

Lion is still pretty buggy and depending on the user's needs, Snow Leopard's rock solid stability may be way more valuable than just having the newest software. And there is absolutely no harm in having two OSes. It gives the user choice.

And why give a USB stick? That's the whole point of the Mac App store.

Does a first time user really know what the picture on the screen should be?

No, a first time user shouldn't know what the picture is but the OP has a join date on these forums of over 4 years ago and obviously is a member of community who discusses and shares this information. He could have easily found this information out with a quick search.

When did Apple say they were shipping back all their Macs? You're making stuff up again.

Speaking of impressions, I don't know about Apple on your side of the pond, but over here, all Apple Stores offer a free "Personal Setup", where you can open your new Mac in the store -- before you leave -- and they'll help you setup your email, install software, and show you the key features of your new Mac, including the App Store.
