Aha! In your original post you stated "I have a 3 month old 5 and the black ano is worn on the edges from regular use." :)

So, you point.

I looked a littl closer and it has some very small scratches, too!

The ano is no different than the 5 I got on introduction. They both scratch and wear the same.:p

Wrong!

The actual process is explained here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BQSyqoziHvU

As you will see, the backs are anodised and "printed" before assembly and chamfering.

Thats a promotional video. The phone on the video ends up with silver chamfered edges and the rest is black. The real iphone is all black. Bare aluminum is NOT black.

The Maglite marketing department loves you ;)

Surefire used to have a promotion video about it. And someone on CP forums actually did it: http://www.candlepowerforums.com/vb...urefire-REALLY-saw-through-another-flashlight

they didnt improve jack, i got a tmobile iphone 5 and mines all scratched up. same goes for my brothers. my friend got one just a month ago from tmobile and guess what. same thing.

they didnt change a damn thing

Mine is a Jan 2013 edition and is fine. But it's always in a case so I am not sure. However, I earlier had a September 2012 black one and that one started showing scratches from day one.

Not sure if they actually changed the process, but I really wish they make the 5S more tough. :(

This is very useful information, thank you.

Very much hoping Apple stop penny pinching with the new one and anodize it to the quality necessary for appropriate durability.

Of course it's a promotional video!

As has been generally accepted on numerous threads in this and other forums, the chamfered edges are subsequently treated with a lacquer - at this stage of manufacture, it is impossible to anodise them.

Thanks SJism23! This is very interesting. A highlight from the text excerpt:

"Essentially, they claim their gold prototype withstood a real life scratch test better than the iPhone 5, which has been known to be susceptible to easy scratches and peeling."

They should start using Titanium for the phones. It can be anodized just like the aluminum and would be slightly stronger than aluminum. I still prefer stainless steel since it has some heft to it and it fairly resistant to damage.

Thanks everyone! Does anyone know if there's any truth to this:

"Around March 2013 Apple changed the way they make the slate iPhone 5 so that newer ones don't scratch as easily. It is actually really really difficult to scratch it now. Most people didn't notice but you can tell if your iPhone 5 doesn't have a perfectly black finish on the aluminium. It will be dark grey on the newer models. You can try comparing newer models to the store display models, which are all early iPhone 5's."

I surely can't say for sure, just sharing my story. Got a replacement unit a couple of weeks ago and it surely feels diferent from my original phone. This one is much more like an iPad Mini I bought late April, which I can tell has a much less fragile coating (still fragile by my standards, though). Again, nothing 'scientific, just my 2 cents.

Thanks for posting & it's encouraging.

Will want to read early reports from customers upon release though and also perhaps watch a video uploaded by some nutcase with too much money and too little sense using the real phones

I've always had the black iPhones, so this is the biggest issue that would prevent me from upgrading to a 5S if not resolved.

Looking forward to hearing reports from new owners next week.

Particularly regarding the black model.

Hopefully this issue will be resolved and everyone can enjoy their phones as they should be able to.

Yeah the video shows that none of the 5S models are anodised. Its all coloured metal, so like the white/silver last year (or any solid metal product) of course paint can't chip off. They should have made a bigger deal about none of them being anodised.

This is why "grey" has replaced the black. They can't have the metal as dark as black paint, but black paint was a nightmare and people moaned.

Everything can b scratched by harder materials!
If u jab the alum. Phone with keys & knife of course it's gonna scratch ...simple.
Steel is great but can b scratch & heavy.
Thixomolding magnesium would be more durable but not thin nor "pretty" enough for the mass.

iPhone is perfect as is. ;-)
