So the iPhone gets bigger now the iPad gets smaller? Makes no sense what so ever for apple to make this product. A smaller iPad means smaller profit margins. Steve Jobs had always maintained a hard line on avoiding the race to the bargain bin. Apple attracts customers who are willing to pay a bit more for the overall experience. Amazon and all the other tablet vendors can fight over the sub 299 market. Not worth apple's time. I would rather they invest more R&D on iPad 4 and iPhone 5s.

.
Steve Jobs said the current 10" size was the only ideal size... and they sold billions. Apple would not be fool enough to cheapen the brand with silly 7" ipad junior. Is very samsung-like.

:apple:

He also never changed his mind. He was a very rigid person who was also very simple-minded which is why we all know what he thought at all times. I personally think you should be the CEO of Apple since you'll always be thinking "What would Steve do?" and you already know what he would think. It would be a perfect fit.

----------

Assuming this is real, I don't get pricing for this new device in the lineup. The new iPod touch starts at 299$

http://www.apple.com/ipod-touch/

How much will the mini cost?

At 399$, you can already get an iPad2.

Will they price it at 299 or 349 and cannibalize other products?

They have to lower the price of the iPod touch - unlikely, was just updated - or the iPad mini looks to expensive.

The iPod touch has a high quality display with a 300+dpi. It's also VERY SMALL. Small products tend to cost more.
The iPad mini will have a terrible dpi since it'll be 1024x768 and won't be as small as an iPod touch.

Am I the only Apple fan not excited about an iPad mini? I don't have an intrest in an iPad mini but I am looking forward to the next generation iPad.

I've never been interested in the iPad but this rumoured smaller version would probably have me buying. I would really like it to go 16:9 though, like the iPhone 5 has and the whole lineup should go IMO.

i see your point. I guess it'll be big for new non iPad users. As an iPad 3 owner, I like the 10" screen size and like having my iPhone as my more portable device.

Screen is 4:3, you are just used to the iPad having thick bezels on all 4 sides.

I really wish Apple would just make the iPad Mini $399 and use the same quality Retina screen as in the iPad 3. Going for 1024x768 in a 7.85" display when the Kindle Fire HD is 1280x800 and the Nook Tablet HD is 1440x900 is a really noticeable difference, especially in reading. One also wonders if we aren't going to see the A6 pop up as well.

I couldn't agree more. Apple should just drop the iPad 2 and go all Retina on their devices and get it over with. If they can't do Retina on the mythical iPad Mini this year, then they're better off waiting till next year.

How come the people who have a "model" never have a functioning one...at least go all out

Because its a mockup, not a prototype.

----------

months ago, they said there would be a minor update to the iPad 3...

no they didn't. Digitimes etc said it but not Apple.

----------

It's not going to have google maps, so why bother? It will be inferior to all other android tablets.

If you only buy a tablet for maps sure.

Some of us however buy them for many other things

The reality is that Mac sales aren't doing too bad. The problem is that Apple has ignored the desktop while producing some really nifty laptops.

But are they ignoring it merely do to so or because they are waiting for some vital piece to their plans.

For example, now that the laptops etc have all gone retina it is logical that the iMac will also. Likely not all of them but a high end 27 inch akin to the 15 inch MBP. With SSD drives and no ODD even.

There's been a lot of talk about this can't be done. Most of it is off a false belief that retains means doubling the current highest resolution 2560x1440. But the math works out to far less of a needed increase. Still they might feel that a vast increase in graphics power would be called for, if not also overall power. And might have been waiting for some new chip to be finished, something perhaps they don't control. Perhaps they might also be waiting for some new higher speed of RAM or larger SSD since iMac users are more accustom to greater storage amounts. And some of those bits and pieces could trickle down to the other models

I don't know about anyone else but if that's the reason for the delay I won't be upset

I hope you are right.
I am looking for the next generation MacPro and ACDs with huge resolutions. Hopefully back the 30 or larger ACD. That is a thing of beauty.

What does that have to do with anything? You are confused, yes?

lol

Really? You can't see how that is related?

Let me explain... Apple was making 13" laptops for many years...

Then all of a sudden a cheaper 11" laptop was launched.

So... did that "cheapen" the Macbook brand?

No it did not. In fact it's hotter than ever.

I don't understand why everyone is so against expanding the iPad line when every other Apple product has multiple models:

3 sizes of laptops
2 sizes of iMacs
5 types of iPods
3 models of phones

And let's not forget all the options for capacity, color, etc.

You say the iPad Mini would cheapen the iPad brand.

Yet the 11" MacBook Air did NOT cheapen the MacBook brand... and the iPod Mini, Nano and Shuffle did NOT cheapen the iPod brand either.

Is the irony of your statement lost on you?

the ipad mini mockup that has been available on alibaba for around $13 for weeks and weeks. who cares about irony? This has been shown to death.

if i see another news thread with it again i'm going to puke. There isn't any information on ipad mini at all. not even a camera ribbon cable just more ********.

Really looking forward to the iPad Mini. Hope they put an anti-glare screen on it so I can replace my Kindle. I don't need another bright display for video - the larger iPad serves that purpose very well. I would use it mainly as an eBook reader.

PS Can't believe there are still so many doubters this close the official announcement. Are you the same people that said all the iPhone 5 leaks were fakes when in fact they all turned out to be spot on. The iPad Mini leaks are coming from the same people. I hope you all come back and say sorry when it's announced next month.

There is nothing and there will be nothing better then a Kindle e-book reader with e-ink for reading. That is there thing and they are good at it. Amazons Kindle touch with wispernet is the best.

Having said that, it is also no competition what so ever to the iPad. Got nothing to do with it. Completely different category.

The iPad is by far the best tablet out there for what a tablet is made for. Not only the pad itself, but the entire system around it. Other tablets may have a slightly faster prozessor, but do not even come close to the integrated system an iPad provides.

Because nobody can compete against the iPad, not on price, not on quality, not on apps, not on image, early on they brought out these little toy 7" mashines. For over a year now there is the "rumor" that Apple will have to "compete" against these cheap plastic postcard size tablets. Apple has to compete against nothing and nobody. Why should they bother? The iPad mini rumors are around since Samsungs first 7"Tab and when the "Experts" talked about 2million "shipped" units (we know today, that about 20000 where sold) and everybody thought there is a demand or indeed a market for this type of tablet. There is not. The next big rumor mill started with the kindle fire, "millions" where sold under price, Amazon had nothing to show for and today very, VERY few people use ther Fires for ebook reading. As a tablet its not really usable and no competition to the ipad, laking sensors, camera, even a microfon for a simple skpe call. The thing was and is useless, being beaten by its real rival, the Kindle touch with 3G.

Now its Googles 7" tablet, that "sells like hotcakes" and so, Apple has to bring out the iPad mini. Why? Who cares. If Google really sold that many mashines, do you not think they would proudly say so? They do not. They celebrate 25b app downloads for Android, not massive sales for nexus devices that do not make any money.

There will be no iPad mini because it makes no sense. There is already the iPad nano, better known as iPod touch and that you can even put in your pocket. A 7" or 7.85" device you can not and so it gets no advantage what so ever over the 10" iPad.

I disagree. There is quite a bit of difference between the pocket-sized iPod Touch and the supposed iPad Mini. They are in 2 different categories.

p2MJk.jpg

What "makes no sense" is that Apple has historically had multiple products in a particular product line... yet you seem to think the iPad should remain a single size.

Why does Apple make multiple sizes and models for most of its products... yet it's wrong for them to do the same for the iPad?

You say there is "no advantage" to the iPad Mini over the regular iPad...

So what is the advantage of the 11" Macbook Air over the 13" Macbook Air? Was that a mistake?

Why is it OK for Apple to make a smaller laptop... but it's crazy to make a smaller tablet?

How about this... Apple isn't making a smaller iPad because of threats from the Nexus 7 and Kindle Fire.

Instead... they are expanding the iPad line like they've done with other products so many times before.

Does that make more sense?

I can't wait till all the "it'll never happen" people are proved wrong. That always makes me happy :)

This mockup looks a little thick to me. I thought it was supposed to be iPod Touch thickness. I think that would make it a super success.

Just like the "It will be called the iPhone 6" people. Happy days!

No. A smaller Laptop (but not as small as the "wave" of 10" Netbooks at the time) with less weight (you pay for every gramm these days on airliners) is making a lot of sense. A smaller iPad is not. A BIGGER iPad, lets say 12" possibly with OSX, touch optimised, yes, but smaller? No.

And by the way, Kindle fire and Nexus are no threat, not even close. These little things are bought, if they are bought, for entirely differend reasons, mainly price. These clients will never get any Apple product, because Apple as a hardware seller will never sell at cost or below cost prices. The money from iTunes and co is the famous pocket money, Amazon and Google try to live of it. Not in Apples interest.

A smaller iPad would mean to get rid of the iPad2 and that enjoys healthy sales atm, for many, including me, the better iPad and very well priced when looking at the competition.

Apple owns the Tablet market, they created it and they dominate it. 10" that is, with way over 90%. why should they give this up and go down into the bargain basement where $80 Tablets from China working on getting people off Android? I know quite some people that got the original fire, many that bought Android cheapo tablets. They all run around with iPads now. They found out that 7" is simply to small for permanent use and only for the occasional search the phone will do. They found out that even a second lag is getting on you nervs, making the thing unusable if you have no fun using it.

As a friend of mine put it, you by cheap, you get cheap and you have to buy twice. You live and learn.

The iPad Mini won't be sold at cost either.

Apple makes a healthy profit on ALL of their products... even the $50 iPod Shuffle.

Not really.

$300 - iPad Mini 7.85"
$400 - iPad 2 9.7"
$500 - iPad Retina 9.7"

Apple usually has upsell potential in their product lines. You can always go up.

But even if someone buys the iPad Mini... it will still earn a profit (as stated earlier)

I'd like to know where you got the iPad 2 sales numbers. I'd guess more people buy the new iPad.

When the iPhone 4S came out... 89% of iPhone sales were the iPhone 4S... and NOT the cheaper iPhone 4.

So maybe most people will skip the iPad Mini and go straight for the bigger iPad 2 or iPad Retina... but the iPad Mini is still there if someone wants it.

I'm just confused on how it's OK for Apple to offer cheaper phones... but not cheaper iPads.

Apple won't make a bargain basement tablet. It will be an iPad... just with less expensive parts (like a smaller screen) and sold at a lower base price.

It would not be one of those $80 tablets... more like $300.

If you think your iPad 2 at $400 is a great value... so would someone with an iPad Mini at $300.

Again... it's not about competing with horrible little $80 tablets... it's about expanding their product line. Just like they've done many times before in other markets.

It is a difference if you sell a existing phone on, at a slightly cheaper price, or if you have to create a compleatly new device just to go cheaper and at the same time compete with your own devices, here the iPod touch.

I just know that for about 15 month there is an iPad mini "imminent" and nothing ever came of it. With all launches, there where leaks, parts, prototypes, anything, months in advance.
Here? Nothing. Wishful thinking and the idea that if enough tech blogs repeat it, it will somehow like "magic" apear.

For the love of god, it's not going to happen. The whole idea seemed ridiculous in the first place.

What resolution would it get, and wasn't the resolution fragmentation something apple wanted to prevent?

First off the iPhone 5 screen changed why couldn't they change the iPad to kick amazon once and for all

----------

Yeppers! Next year! After most of Apples Prosumer and Pro customers have made the jump to the PC.

Cmon Apple, your one of the most wealthy companies in the world.

Dell can update a dozen models every few months.

Are you saying you cant update 2 models in over a year?

I think timing is key as are surprises

I think you project a very complacent view of the tablet market. To say that nobody will ever challenge the iPad is sadly mistaken in my view. There are an increasing number of tablets entering the market and the quality is getting better all the time. And it's not just about the 7" devices. Amazon recently launched an excellent 9" device. I'm sure Google has a 10" Nexus tablet ready and waiting to go. Apple cannot afford to be complacent and dismiss the competition.

Secondly I'm certain that Apple will announce a 7" iPad in October but not for the reasons that you think. It's not necessarily about competing with the other 7" tablets out there, it's about Apple identifying what their customers want and delivering on that. Contrary to popular belief Apple does seek feedback from it's customers, they have customer panels, etc. I think that they've received a lot of feedback saying that for some people the iPad is just that bit too big and too heavy. So they are making the iPad Mini to address that demand from their core customer base. I'm sure it will also attract customers away from the likes of Amazon and Google which is a bonus.

This kind of arrogant "Apple is all supreme and doesn't need to do anything" attitude will be the death of Apple if they listen to it. Over the years I've seen numerous tech companies reach the top, start to think they were invincible, get complacent and eventually come crashing back down to earth again.

I already have, with the huge amount of hardware failures on my 2011 27in iMac, unless the next iMac, or Mac pro really have something friggen awesome, I am done with Apple, which is a shame, I've bought tons of Macs over the years and loved tons of them, but the last two have been terrible. My PC's have never given me this kinda trouble.

But, Apple has surprised me before ( Like with the G5, I was so tempted when they came out, fresh outta college, paychecks piling up like no tommarow, then the dual 1.8 came out, bought it in an instant, Love that machine to this day, and my Dual 2.7 G5 as well ). So I can hope.

Now apple is obsessed with making iToy crap. Sure it makes them more money, and more power to em.

But its sad that the Mac is dead. And has been dead for some time.

Mac = HEY I GOT AN IDEA. LETS TAKE OSX, TURN IT INTO HALF iOS/OSX AND MAKE IT UNSTABLE. Its totally insane, Windows XP/7/8/OSX/10.3/10.4/10.5/10.6 have not given me 1/2 the trouble OSX 10.7 and 10.8 ( BIG improvement, but still needs work imo ) have.

I miss mah Good Macs. I don't care about an nice looking phone with an oudated OS and a broken Map App, and I don't care about ****** Apple TV, nor do I care about the garbage fake uselss iPad.

Lets here some news about MACS for once. Ya know, real tools for real users? Ya know? The Mac? The product that Put apple on the map?

For every customer that leaves apple Eco 4 more will replace that one

You can see it. I can see, I'm sure millions of others can see it but sadly we are banging our head against a brick wall with Chlloret because people like that just don't get it. They don't understand that not everyone has the same needs as they do. They are always on these forums saying that Apple shouldn't do this or that. I'm sure if he had his way there would be one mac, one iPhone, one iPad and that's it. Personally as a fan of Apple products I would like to see more products to chose from not less.

Like you say Apple has size options in just about every product category. The one thing that does worry me however is how Apple seem to be reducing their range and options. There was talk of a 15" MBA - that never happened. They dropped the 17" MBP. We've had no new/updated Mac desktops at all this year -no new iMac, Mac Mini or Mac Pro. The iPod Watch that so many people want never happened and they've retrenched the iPods backwards IMO.

I don't know what's going on in Tim Cook's head but I wish he would listen to customers more and look at his financial reports less. Apple has always been about more than just making money.
