why does the mbp in the picture have a intel extreme edition and ati sticker on it? chinese ****...

EDIT: holy **** this dude has a zillion apps installed/running!!

Actually not only do the computers most people use have a screen res that is less than that but also screen resolution in no way determines how useful this ipad will be at all. The ipad 2 was just as useful as the new one and this will have a higher density than the ipad 2 did. There is nothing you can do on the new ipad that you couldnt do on the 2. Text being blurry makes it no less useful, in fact it may come as a shock to you but I am typing this message just fine on a 21.5" iMac that has a density of 102PPI and is actually more useful than even the high res display iPad LOL

There's a range of dpi that's acceptable based on the product. For a phone which you hold very close it should be at least 300dpi. For a tablet you hold it out pretty far so at least 200dpi is the minimum. For a desktop all you need is a high quality IPS display and you're good to go since you're relatively very far from the screen.
"Text being blurry is no less useful" I'm saying for people who are used to the best tablet, the current gen iPad, this new iPad will be unusable. People who don't have the current iPad are the type of people who don't buy the best, that's what I was saying.

----------

Apple doesn't do "Second best" and they don't target other companies people.
They create their own markets. Haven't you noticed?

They're targeting the cheap Android 7" tablets, like the galaxy tab and the nexus 7. This new tablet would be no different, other than it having a dpi less than 200.

I call BS on this one, that is just a poor mockup someone has made on a desktop CNC setup. The design is not credible as the bezel around the side of the display is too small to hold it easily without covering some of the display. The finish on this isn't good either, looks like silver paint rather than anodized aluminium. The screen reflections are not flat indicating thin plastic has been used rather than glass. If there is going to be an iPad mini this is not a mockup of it. At least not one made by Apple or anyone with decent prototyping capabilities, very poor effort.

Didnt SJ say that the perfect size for a tablet was the current 10" size?

Until Eddie Cue showed him a Galaxy Tab and convinced him otherwise.

We need to move past what Steve Jobs said or what he "might have" said - it's tiring.

What I want to know is why the heck there's an Intel and ATI sticker on the Apple MacBook Pro in the picture on the fast page making it look like some PC bought at OfficeMax

I don't understand all the whining in this forum. If this product is real, and you dig it, buy it. If you hate it, don't. It's as simple as that.

If you feel like Apple isn't focusing on "real machines" like the iMac/Mac Pro, then move on to some other company. Good riddance.

The Nexus 7 is a proof of concept and demonstrates there is a serious market demand for a 7" tablet.

Google has done the market research; now Apple will eat their lunch.

Really? What serious market demand is it demonstrating?

A $200 impulse buy proves nothing. How many have been sold? Really? My local store sold out within a week. They had 5 units (8GB) Wow. They did not order more, as there are no more atm and people actually are not asking for it.

IPads going out at about one paletta (72 units) per week. Mostly the new iPad2, only about one third the new iPad. I myself have my iPad 2 now for about a year and just got two more for the kids, I do not see for what I should pay over $100 more with the new iPad. Heavier, thicker, less battery, hotter and more expensive. What do you get? Better res (I can not see with 61years, very happy with my 1024 res) better cam (never used) and SIRI (running on my iPad for the last six month) big deal.

However, 7" would not be useful, it would mean, that you need still a computer somewhere. I did not use my trusty MBP anymore since the iPad. Can't see for what.

I might have missed the thread, but how come no one mentioned this? If you do the math,

2048x1536 pixels of the latest iPad is 264ppi at 9.7'. Which just happens to be exactly 326ppi at the rumored 7.85'.

What are the odds? This way Apple addresses everyone's concerns about a new resolution while also making the iPad ppi exactly the same as the iPhone ppi.

Steve Jobs said that 7" was a bad size. The iPad mini is 7.85". It seems like 7" would be too small, but I've never used a 7" tablet.

There are strong rumors pointing to the iPad mini not having a retina display and, of course, not having the same resolution as the iPad. Also, I think 326ppi would be overkill (past the ppi required for "retina").

He's dead. It doesn't matter what he said. He doesn't run the company anymore. It's time to move on. That was my point.

Just ship the bloody thing, it will sell like every other iDevice, in vast numbers.

What it _won't do_ is cannibalize the full size iPad sales to any great extent. If anything there will be droves of people like me that buy both.

I've been waiting a long time for Apple to get with the program and build one this size. :)

I don't think this is a mock up at all.

It's a regular iPad, and the guy in the video just has super small hands.

An iPad mini won't be useful. It will just be cheaper and increase the size of the target market. Sounds like something Tim would do.

Just reading this at my iPad and I have to say I doubt Apple will fragment their line like this.
With a new iPhone with larger screen it makes the importance of the iPad nano even less desirable.
I really don't think this will happen.

Sheesh. .... Looks wierd ..

I don't like that thin bezel round the sides. Where are your fingers gonna go when your not inadvertently touching the display.?

not bloody likely

.
Steve Jobs said the current 10" size was the only ideal size... and they sold billions. Apple would not be fool enough to cheapen the brand with silly 7" ipad junior. Is very samsung-like.

:apple:

Really looking forward to the iPad Mini. Hope they put an anti-glare screen on it so I can replace my Kindle. I don't need another bright display for video - the larger iPad serves that purpose very well. I would use it mainly as an eBook reader.

PS Can't believe there are still so many doubters this close the official announcement. Are you the same people that said all the iPhone 5 leaks were fakes when in fact they all turned out to be spot on. The iPad Mini leaks are coming from the same people. I hope you all come back and say sorry when it's announced next month.

Pricing issue vs iPod touch

Assuming this is real, I don't get pricing for this new device in the lineup. The new iPod touch starts at 299$

http://www.apple.com/ipod-touch/

How much will the mini cost?

At 399$, you can already get an iPad2.

Will they price it at 299 or 349 and cannibalize other products?

They have to lower the price of the iPod touch - unlikely, was just updated - or the iPad mini looks to expensive.

Yeah, I agree. I don't believe Apple should (will) worry about cannibalizing full sized iPad sales, I suspect many of the buyers are purchasing:

- An additional iPad
- Based on price (not a buyer for the more expensive device at this time)
- Based on Size (not a buyer for the larger device)

I believe the people who would have purchased a larger iPad, but decide to buy the smaller device (potentially leading to less profit), are in the minority. Even then, they're still at least buying an Apple product, which could lead to investment in the ecosystem, more hardware purchases (i.e., this device is great and would be even better with an AppleTV/Mac/iPhone/etc).

I also don't think a price overlap (or near overlap) with the iPod Touch is an issue either, it's more of a usage consideration vs. price, even if they're the same price, you're looking at better camera, more portable, a few other special Touch only perks, vs. a larger form factor (less portable) using tablet based apps (that utilize more screen real estate).

I doubt the legitimacy of this thing. If Apple continues to release devices with different screen sizes (both physical size and resolution), universal apps will become a thing of the past. Developers need to get paid for extra support.
