40 Gb. iPod

It is 9:08 EST in Michigan and I did find what the update to the appl site was. The new iPod and it goes for $500. What was curious was the fact that the 30Gb was gone, so could this mean that appl might do the samething w/ the Pbk. lines as well??? At anyrate, I'm wating for the iTri-corder w/the .5 GigaQuad memory that includes all the life forms encountred by Starfleet Medical 😉

btw: No POWERBOOK, NO PURCHASE!!

How about a compromise, Stevie?

Why not ship a dual-button trackpad on the new PowerBooks but, by default, the right button is set up to act as a left button. This would make the two buttons appear to be a single button to a new user (and Steve). That is, a click on either button acts as a left mouse click. Then, in the Preferences, you could set up the right button to be a real right click. (Just as nowadays you can set up the trackpad to accept a tap as a click.)

This solves the problem without making it harder for anyone. Newbies get the same old (virtual) single button, but advanced users get the advantage of two buttons.

They could even make it a rocker button so that it still appears to be a single button, but a click on the left is different from a click on the right. Apple's good at that sort of trickery.😎

That is an incredible idea!!!

iMac

New iMacs -- could this be where the delivery of new G4s mentoined above are going? DO they use the same chips as the PBs?

Has anyone else seen the peecee friendly beige box navigation on the iPod pages. No cool metal effect.

Good news, though. Two of the three expected updates have been delt with before Paris

Let this mean that the other one's an exciting one. If you catch my drift.

Have Powerbooks ever had a lower speed than iMacs? Frankly, I haven't paid that close attention, but I think that's probably because iMacs have always been either a processor ahead of the iMac, or fast in GHz.

This makes me think that PB updates next week (I mean, c'mon! It has to be next week!) will be at least 1.33 GHz. Or.... NO! ...must ... not ... jinx the announcement...

You'd be right for most engineering efforts, but I think this is best modeled as a random process.

Actually, the update process is more of a hazard function than a random process. Updates happen. And the longer the period from the last update, the more likey that an update occurs at any given period. Immediately after an update, the likelihood of an update occurring dimishes.

Sorry to the geeky statistical response.

10 months and waiting...

Greaaattt... new 4000gb iPods. Two months after they issued the previous "new" iPods, we have "newer" ones. Meanwhile, the 15inch PowerBooks are gathering dust on the shelves, with their flaking paint and hideous black keyboards. It's been10 months! We need new 15 inch powerbooks, not new iPods! What's Apple thinking? Have they decided to abandon the 15 inch? Are they focusing on the iPods now as their main source of revenue? Arrrgh, it's madness.

😡 😕 😡

Nope, the new iMac use the 7455. HOPE the new PB's don't use this chip!

It's probably a lot easier (and it was probably planned from the start) to have 10, 20, and 40 gig iPods.

And none of them hold 4000 gigabits, or even 4000 gigabytes (capital GB) 🙂

Oh how I've missed reading and posting...

Lol, I got a bit overwhelmed by life after my powerbook arrived. LSE forms came in, credit card had to be gotten, more software from Apple had to be bought, things had to be rid of since I'm leaving soon...fun, fun.

But, now I got time to look back into the good old powerbook rumour. It HAS to be next week. No way is Jobs gonna give a Keynote and not have something nifty. And what else is left to be updated but the PB's now?? (As now I'm caught off-guard and the X-serves are updated).

Read this whole thread, definitely quite interesting. I must say, I loved the two-button mouse idea as well...especiallly a rocker mouse...haha, that'd be great! 😀

What could he announce?

Powerbooks
Xserves
iTunes Music store for Europe

You see, I just remembered that we've been waiting for new iPods, new iMacs, and the above: not just powerbooks.

I hope that I'm wrong, but...

I'm sorry but there are no guarentees as to what he'll announce. After what I've seen (or not seen) He may just announce that appl is getting rid of the mid-sized laptop and improving the 17 & 12" 'ers. We automatically assume that He MUST announce and make availible what we want but the truth in the matter is, if the profits from the ibook and other machines are really making money for the company why not upgrade them 1st?? Remember, the iBook is coded as a G-3 Powerbook.

I do hope that I am wrong about this but I can't seem to get over the fact that the it would be old technology when or if the 15" would be made availible and 1 year since the last upgrade. If or when a G-5 Laptop is released, I may be around the sametime next year when they make the jump to G-5 chips. By then, would appl be on the verg of reaching 3 Ghz. speed when the their laptops are just breaking the 1.2Ghz. threshold??

Easily the hottest question in the PowerPage in-box (and via IM) is "Where is the PowerBook 5-Inch update?" While we don't have a precise announcement date we can tell you that it isn't likely to be announced at Apple Expo in Paris later this month.

That would be a dumb decision. That would not happen.

If they are, that's because the PowerBook hasn't been updated. The solution: update the PowerBook, so you make money from all your lines.

By that time, they'll be down to a 90nm process, i.e. high-frequency G5's in the PowerBook.

Are those guys ever right?

Anyway, this is just getting ridiculous. The more and more they delay this, the more I'm going to be disappointed if it's NOT a G5 Powerbook. If it isn't announced on or before the Paris expo, it damn well better be because they're figuring out a way to fit a G5 in this thing.
