Yep. Not surprised. I got an exchange last week and it's horribly yellow and blotchy. Actually worse than the first one, but I didn't notice until I got home.

My wife doesn't seem to care much, so I've handed the 3 to her and I'm back to using the 2. Retina display can wait until next year for me, I suppose. I may try to exchange the 3 again if I feel like it. Nearest Apple store is two hours away.

Apple had production issues with the ipad 2 screen seems like they just cant get it right at release.

Low and behold...... the bottom 2/3 has like a pink tint to it or whatever. On the attached picture you can see the line of separation just below the 2nd row of icons. The picture really doesn't do it justice, much more noticeable in person.

Welcome to new Apple QC! This is unfortunately usual on iPad retina display... If you want to exhibit the problem more clearly (it's not really visible on you shot..), you can use one or both of the attached grey charts (in vertical orientation). These problems are (logically) more visible on grey or neutral tints.

Also, set the iPad at the default 50-60% brightness. Full brightness tend to hide the issue: LED luminance does not change the LCD panel performance itself. In fact, the effect is still exactly the same for any LED brightness but is really less noticeable visually...

Good luck with the new iPad! If you get a nice screen, let use know (I've never sen one in person :()

P.-S. Can you enter your serial number here and post the result: http://www.chipmunk.nl/klantenservice/applemodel.html

It will be a brand new technology in retina fashion so no guarantee it will be better

Pretty sure it will be better as the Ipad3's screen was initially designed for that since the current manufacturing tech is already beyond its limits with the PPI requirements. Only time will tell but I'll probably wait for that screen type or at least when store demo units wont have tints anymore.

Has anyone noticed all the retina display really does is show up the flaws in apple products.

UPDATE:

Apple Customer Relations phoned me back as promised and the lovely Irish lady at the UK/Ireland head office has been in touch with one of the senior technicians, as I had the day before, and they are doing a 'force replacement' for me. Another returns box is arriving on Monday and I have to send the defective iPad back again, as soon as they receive it they are sending me a replacement. This is called a 'force replacement' where the repair/replacement guys are contacted, notes left, etc. and they just swap it out, no questions asked.

I can't praise the 2 guys at AppleCare Customer Relations who have/are handling my case high enough. They have gone out of their way to sort this for me and everything they have said, they have followed through with. They have reassured me that if the replacement has they same (or any other) problems, to simply call them back and they will sort it again for me. Her actual words were, 'I will work with you on this case until you get the outcome you want and are happy with'. This is very reassuring.

The replacement will not be a refurbished model, however, it will come in 'simple, plain packaging' but these are brand new models just set aside for replacements. The senior tech guy has reassured me of this and said there will not be any iPad 3 refurbished models yet as it's still to early on for this.

I asked if I could have one selected with a DY serial number but he didn't think this was possible as there are so many of them it would be very hard for the guys doing the replacements to riffle through all the iPad's looking for specific serials. He said, they come over from China on huge crates and one is selected and then sent out. This is understandable.
He then reiterated that if the new one has any problems to get back in touch and they would sort it for me. He also said, there will be good and bad in all batches/serial numbers and I suppose this is true as I have seen good screens from people who bought on launch day.
DY serials are the new batches by the way, this was confirmed to me.

So I will have iPad #4 Tuesday/Wednesday. I will follow up once I receive it. Here's hoping this one will be The One lol.

Lol, love the honesty. "Oh yeah, don't bother with serial numbers. There are crappy ones in every batch."

good luck to you. I'm going to hold out for another month and then take the dive again.

Don't expect miracles. 50 cents / hr Chinese labor guys.

Like I said before, only to get out of this mess is for Apple to drop contract with the Chinese plants. Drop contract with LCD IPS manufacturing. Lay off about 80% of Apple employees world-wide. Spend billions on brand new factories in Japan. Building plants in Japan will be mega expensive, but what can we say... they do better job on the manufacturing and assembly. By then, Apple will have very little money left to even feed themselves.

Oh, that's not it. Apple will have to raise the new iPad price by quadruple, or more.

We can then finally have better built better quality screens..

$500 for a pad device isn't that much. Gas price alone costs over 4 bucks / gal. $500 is nothing. $3000 iPad baby.

Anyone expecting top quality screen for $500- 600 you are crazy.

I mean really... $3000 is the realistic price, not $500.

Truth be told, as I said last year, I would purchase an iPad 3 if it had ost $3000...

I need this thing, $500 is basically stealing from Apple for such a device. I feel like turning myself in for theft...

Thanks for the update, it's nice to have a confirmation on the dy's. Keep us posted. Btw has anyone in manhattan gotten a DY yet?

Seriously, knowing what you know now, wouldn't you have spend LOTS more than $500 for the iPad just 2-3 years ago?

I basically spend $1500 on an ultra-portable Windows machine (shame on me) in addition to my desktop and workhorse laptop just to do things I do on my iPad now. And it was a horrible experience, loud fans, 2h battery life, no network connectivity, etc. Now I am using an iPhone, a MacBook Air 13", and an iPad and feel like I should be paying Apple tons more cash for the value I am receiving... Still feel like a criminal stealing from the biggest company in the world...

I feel the opposite way. I felt cheated by Apple when I had the iPads with the bad screens. Touting them as being so great, then ending up with blotchy, unevenly lit, multi-tinted garbage. That's why they don't have my money at the moment.

Then donate your money to apple, write them a blank check and make a note under memo that they should hire more QC personnels

I went thru 3 of them before I just stuck with my 2
But you are a newbie so let me warn you what the fanboys here will flame you with:

1-you are OCD

2-live with it- it is a apple product

3-you really did not see what you saw

4-you are a troll newbie, bad mouthed apple in all it's glory and you are not a fanboy

5-even though you spent your hard earned money- nothing is wrong- use it-
Do not look at the defect-now see it is gone!

6-it is good enough and within specs

7-ALL OF THE ABOVE

best of luck and do not settle for one you are not happy with-no matter what the fanboys say

Seems I may have lucked out. Returned it at the store even though at first there were like "Sorry...personalized items purchased online have to be returned directly to Aplle.com". Yeah...right... I was not to be denied. Anyway, they only had the 64GB wifi version in white. Okay, whatever, I'll take it. So far, so good.

And I have no doubt this screen issue is widespread but your average Joe just doesn't notice it. That doesn't mean it's not a problem. It just means Apple is playing a numbers game. They expect a certain % of the population will return theirs and have that analysis built into their cost structure. Right or wrong, it's a business decision they made.

This. There is no question in my mind that Apple is aware of the inconsistency of these screens. Theyre a victim of their own success (with consumers paying the price unfortunately) and have created such high expectations and such a compressed timeline for new product releases that it's nearly impossible to retain the same QC standards they did in the past. Oh would I love to be a fly on the wall during the meeting where screen issues came up ...

That's why I think some aren't pleased with this product. I agree, Apple products are great and in my view also worth every penny and then some. We own plenty. But, that doesn't mean they shouldn't be called out for crappy QC on a product where the screen is one of the main selling points. I expect better from a company that consistently puts out top notch products. And my experience with this one has been disappointing compared to every other Apple device and computer that I have purchased.

That is the whole strategy for apple upon releasing the new iPad . They know this is an issue but a very marginal amount of people will notice it and they are right, most won't .

People seeking a perfect iPad simply does not exist.

Got my iPad today. Ordered it 13 days ago. Was okay with the wait considering it was coming from China. After I ordered it I started reading this forum for reviews and comments. Of course, first thing I did when I got the unit was inspect the screen. Low and behold...... the bottom 2/3 has like a pink tint to it or whatever. On the attached picture you can see the line of separation just below the 2nd row of icons. The picture really doesn't do it justice, much more noticeable in person. Very noticeable on lighter shades, not noticeable on pure white or very dark shades.

Lame. Lame. Lame.

Will be returning this poorly manufactured device tomorrow. They get one more shot. I'm not gonna be one of these fools who return like 12 of them. If the next one isn't good, they can kiss my behind goodbye for a while. This is BS. This isn't one random unit. This is a MAJOR problem. Granted, I probably wouldn't have noticed it right away if I hadn't been looking for it. But I guess when one EARNS a reputation, that's the price you pay. Quite disappointed that they are allowing this to continue and keeping the problem under wraps. Bush league.

Sorry, I just dont see what you are describing.

Just received my 4th iPad in the mail. I haven't had much time to inspect it, but so far it's a major improvement over my other defective models. No noticeable tint, uneven brightness or light bleeding. Looks great!

The AppleCare rep attached a detailed note to my case with instructions to send me a uniform screen. Looks like it worked!

You might run into trouble with this idea because there are MANY people on this forum and elsewhere who refuse to believe any of us are having issues. You've probably already seen the insults flying around. Calling somebody obsessive compulsive seems to be the main one.

I work as an IT writer and have written about Windows, Linux and Macs. By far the most aggressively strident are Mac fans. The rule amongst writers is: Never read the comments left below a piece you write about Apple. It will remove your faith in humanity. Even if you're positive about Apple stuff, people will still attack you. It's crazy.

So, if you decide to do this, be prepared to battle!

It's hard to believe that you would think that somebody who returns 15 iPads looking for one that's "perfect" is a bit OCD. I mean, that perfectly normal behavior.

I am also waiting on iPad #4 from Apple in the mail.

Did yours come in a brown box?

Also, is it a DY serial number?

Glad it's looking good for you so far. Here's hoping my #4 will be the same :)

Sorry, I just dont see what you are describing.
Like my post said, the picture doesn't do it justice. The guy at the store immediately noticed it. I asked him "I'm not going to tell you what is wrong with the screen, I want to see if you see what I see".....

New to forum

This is my first post here. Just got my iPad. It has a dead pixel, light bleed and an uneven color tint. This is my first apple product, I'm rather disappointed. I mean the whole point of this iPad is the screen.

Just saying this to add to the number of people with this issue so as to give a more clear picture. It's so annoying you don't hear about these things in reviews and stuff. Makes me think apple people really are brainwashed sometimes.

Perfect 1st Try

Produced : Week 15 April - 32GB Wifi - Purchased in Tasmania

Best screen I've ever had on any Apple device bar none. Use mainly for location photography proofing so very very happy.

Are there production weeks that are better than others or does it just seem to be luck of the draw at the moment?

FYI the best way to see color unevenness is with a solid gray background. Gradients, color bars, solid white, etc. are all well and good, but nothing shows the pink/green issue like 60% gray. I had lulled myself into accepting my current iPad as ok, by checking the screen with a white background at the store. When I got home it looked ok. A couple of days later, the I noticed the keyboard seemed pinkish on one side, green on the other. Of course the keyboard is based on gray. I made a field of 60% gray and my reasons for seeing pink and green became evident.

Crank up the brightness all the way and load up this image full screen...
