If you don't like your iPad screen then take it back! Apple doesn't owe you anything. They are a business to make money, if their QC process is lacking overall numbers will show this... not 5-6 people showing others how to "Look" for problems. "But I paid good money for this..."
Stop expecting BMW quality with your used Chevy.

Go buy a Samsung and then cry to their board when it's not "How Apple Does it"!.

Stop trying to buy a BMW with your used Chevy.

5-6 people? Don't forget there are other forums on the internet besides macrumors. You might want to check out the 38 page thread on Apple's own discussion forums.

You BMW/Chevy argument makes no sense. Zero.

Do you have anything to add to these discussions besides the exact same words over and over? This is a screen complaint thread last time I checked. Why are you here?

I called apple yesterday for the second time and really told them how unpleased i a with 3 returns and yet the same issue. Telling them i have exhausted all avenues with returns and that i am now too, exhausted of this. I got my ipad on launch day so only another replacement would have to be done as i am past my 14 days.

I always try to remain calm on the phone because you can not blame anyone in applecare ( they obvioisly dont make the product)and it gets you nowhere. They have offered me a brand new ipad sealed in the box with the new date of purchase so i will need to repurchase applecare +

This is the dilemma will it be a decent screen? I hope so. I have a case number so i assume this is applecare executive help

Having had a number of duff iPads just after launch I tried again today - a week 14 DY Factory one - nope - dust under the screen - again.

I really give up this time. What a shame. Mind you given the video of the Foxconn factory that surfaced a few weeks ago it's hardly surprising - iPads seem to be pretty well hand assembled - which explains a lot. No doubt automated assembly lines cost a lot more than migrant workers.

And I have no doubt this screen issue is widespread but your average Joe just doesn't notice it. That doesn't mean it's not a problem. It just means Apple is playing a numbers game. They expect a certain % of the population will return theirs and have that analysis built into their cost structure. Right or wrong, it's a business decision they made.
Exactly. It is "low grade". Apple has lowered itself down to low grade. Apple name is too high for that though. This company is cheating, using its brand image to make profit on crap products making people think it must be cool because it's Apple.

I said this like over 30 times already. Apple needs to lay off 80% of its employees world-wide. Drop contract with existing Chinese ghey factories and drop contract with lousy Samsung Retina screen manufacturing. Build two brand new factories in Japan ground up. Spend billions on the top quality factories and utilize SAMOLED+ tech with 10" screen and pay additional billions on QC alone.... 10 step visual inspection as a QC for every single pad built in the plant. I want them in limited production. Make only a thousand a month world-wide.

There is no other way.

Hmmm, I wonder whose business model is better?

hahaha this made me laugh... please, this is embarrassing to read. Let me fill you in:

Have you even used another tablet out there? all of them are made of plastic, feel cheap and most importantly: the UI is doesn't compare to iOS there is very few apps for them too which is a huge disadvantage. The iPad is not "cool" because is apple, its cool because of the huge momentum behind it (I'm taking apps which are coused by the amount of users). I urge you to find another laptop/phone/tablet that is as high quality as the apple equivalent.

1- Lay off 80% of its workforce? hahahaha yeah ok...

2- What makes you think a factory in japan is going to yield any better results than a factory in china. If they're going to invest in anything it would be on automated assembly lines.

3- Also, the iPad already has a 9.7 inch screen. Why on earth would they go through the trouble of increasing the screen by .3 in?

4- And my favorite one: You do realize that SAMOLED+ displays (aka Super AMOLED) is made by "Lousy Samsung" right?

10 step visual inspection as a QC for every single pad built in the plant. I want them in limited production. Make only a thousand a month world-wide.

The only reason the iPad is so successful is because of how many people own one. This is what drives developers to invest in apps and its what keeps the apple ecosystem working. This wouldn't be possible with your "limited production". You would end up with a high quality product, that will probably cost a coupe, thousand dollars with absolutely no support whatsoever. Nobody would even bother making an app for it.

You clearly have no understanding of production practices and how a company is run. It's ok tho, I had fun reading your post.

This is CLEARLY a wind up

Yes.

all of them are made of plastic, feel cheap and I am hot
Of course all are made poorly. That is because the Chinese took over the world in manufacturing. Literally every electronics and non-electronics are built by the Chinese.

the UI is doesn't compare to iOS there is very few apps for them too which is a huge disadvantage.
That's the only pretty thing that Apple has. But still suffer from compatibility. You can't do jack nothing on the video playbacks and you can't simply copy files over using "drag-n-drop" from PC to iPad back and forth.

The iPad is not "cool" because is apple, its cool because of the huge momentum behind it (I'm taking apps which are coused by the amount of users).
Momentum of sales and popularity? That's because of the brand image, Apple. What good is it when the quality is junk?

I urge you to find another laptop/phone/tablet that is as high quality as the apple equivalent.
Exterior cosmetics? What good is it when Apple has so many defects? It's full of defects, more so than other, older laptops from different brand. Exterior cosmetics isn't important. What matters is if the device "functions" without problems, like defect-free.

2- What makes you think a factory in japan is going to yield any better results than a factory in china.
Answer: Better quality machines. Better precision equates to better built devices with minimal errors. Chinese factory uses everything cheap.

If they're going to invest in anything it would be on automated assembly lines.
Automated? Like robots? or automated with actual workers in the field?
Robots are stupid. They don't have brains and don't have eye balls so they can't spot a strand of hair or specks of dust or other debris on the screen during the assembly. It requires "humans" to do the job in the manufacturing process. You are going backwards.

3- Also, the iPad already has a 9.7 inch screen. Why on earth would they go through the trouble of increasing the screen by .3 in?
You misunderstood what I said entirely. Currently the SAMOLED+ tech doesn't have 10" available screen. Samsung has 7.7 16x9 ratio screen currently, which is why I said increase to 10". 9.7" and 10", doesn't matter here. You misunderstood completely.

4- And my favorite one: You do realize that SAMOLED+ displays (aka Super AMOLED) is made by "Lousy Samsung" right?
I said "Lousy Samsung RETINAdisplay". I didn't say Samsung company is lousy. Please do read carefully before jumping in to conclusion.

The only reason the iPad is so successful is because of how many people own one.
It's the name brand that has a huge impact for the customers. If you have the money, would you buy a Lexus or a Yugo? Not that I'm saying Apple is Lexus, because Apple has full of defects.

This wouldn't be possible with your "limited production". You would end up with a high quality product, that will probably cost a coupe, thousand dollars with absolutely no support whatsoever. Nobody would even bother making an app for it.
iPad isn't the only device that runs apps. Check out macbooks and iMac's. They've got apps.

Welcome to new Apple QC! This is unfortunately usual on iPad retina display... If you want to exhibit the problem more clearly (it's not really visible on you shot..), you can use one or both of the attached grey charts (in vertical orientation). These problems are (logically) more visible on grey or neutral tints.

Also, set the iPad at the default 50-60% brightness. Full brightness tend to hide the issue: LED luminance does not change the LCD panel performance itself. In fact, the effect is still exactly the same for any LED brightness but is really less noticeable visually...

Good luck with the new iPad! If you get a nice screen, let use know (I've never sen one in person :()

P.-S. Can you enter your serial number here and post the result: http://www.chipmunk.nl/klantenservice/applemodel.html

For what's worth, the charts plus a grey image...Maybe not perfect, but I think it's impossible to have a mass produced perfect Led Display, especially with a new resolution like the new iPad

Why don't you print a photo from your iPad, then a photo from your Mac and compare the two prints.

Not a bad idea, but I already know that my late 2008 Macbook Pro has the best display I've ever seen on a laptop :)

How would you proof an image since -- as far as I know -- the iPad is not color managed and cannot be color managed? Am I missing some information here?

Thanks
Dimitri

Produced : Week 15 April - 32GB Wifi - Purchased in Tasmania

Best screen I've ever had on any Apple device bar none. Use mainly for location photography proofing so very very happy.

Are there production weeks that are better than others or does it just seem to be luck of the draw at the moment?

would assume he means proofing for exposure, sharpness, composition, etc...anything but critical color.

UPDATE:

So here's the deal

I got my 'replacement' iPad 3 from Apple and you guessed it...... it was WORSE, yes worse, than the one I sent back. This bad boy was the worse one yet. Half the screen, literally half, was green and the other half pink. Now I've had them with patches of light green and pink but this one was dark green and pink, and the screen literally split down the middle with each colour.
I was straight on the phone to Apple Customer Relations in Ireland and they were going to send me another replacement. At the time I agreed but then decided it was time for me to go in store (travel an hour each way) hence why I didn't take this route sooner and get it sorted there. Bare in mind, this all happened on a Friday so I had the weekend to mull it over. And that's what I did, came to the decision to sell the replacement (for a loss) just to get it out of my hair and so I could get off the replacement bandwagon and start afresh. Sold the bad replacement for a loss over the weekend and went into Apple on Saturday.....
Explained to one of those nerdy Genius guys all the problems I'd been having and that I wanted to try a DY serial number. Off he popped (after a few weird looks) and returned with a DY. Checked it over, all looked good, home I go.
Switched it on and this one had yellow edges and a blue patch in the bottom left corner  None of this was visible under the Apple store lights, it looked near perfect. Blue is a new one to me. I've seen green, pink and yellow, even a combination of all 3, but not blue.
Yesterday I decide to go back to another Apple store, again not in my area, another hours drive each way. This time I don't even tell them about all the other bad iPad's I've been through. I just say, this one has a discoloured screen and I would like to do a return and re-buy. He agrees, and so brings me a new one out. I didn't bother to ask about serial numbers, nothing. I just open up the one he brings me (DM by the way), load a blank white screen and hey presto, there is it, yellow left side with dark top left corner when held in portrait. This was under the bright Apple store lights as well so I knew it would be real bad under normal light conditions. I tell the 'Genius' what the problem is and you guessed it, he couldn't see it. Luckily another customer was walking passed, either that or eves dropping and she piped up 'I can see it. Look, it's yellow, right there' :D The Genius gets all flustered at this and goes to find back up with yellow iPad in hand. He comes back with another Genius, a girl. She is lovely, says she can see it also and says to the other guy, 'What's the problem? Do another exchange'. He looks pissed but does the exchange. A DY lands in my hands and I open it up, it's like de ja vu all over again lol. It looks good, I take it home. Genius looks happier now that I'm leaving :D

So here I am, 7th (or is it 8th?) iPad down the line and I finally have one that I'm 'happy-ish' with. Again, looked perfect in the Apple store but not quite as perfect back at home.
It is by far the best iPad 3 I have owned, no pink, green or blue at all. Slight, very light yellow down the left side which is not even noticeable in day light and can only be seen in a dark room like when using the iPad in bed at night. All the other yellow ones I've had have been noticeable at all times so I'm happy at least about this. No dead pixels, no dust, no hair, no scratches, dints, etc. It's a keeper.

I have come to the conclusion that there aren't any perfect iPad 3's out there. I have been through 7/8 and each one has had some sort of screen tint/discolouration. What are the odds of that? Some are a lot worse than others and some are hardly noticeable. If you ask me, it's about finding one that's hardly noticeable and living with it. I had 1 from early on that was quite good screen wise but at that time I still thought there were perfect iPad's out there so sent it back in the hope I'd get that perfect one. I wish now that I'd kept it and saved myself a lot of time, stress and hassle.

I can't fault Apple Customer Relations though. They rang me back today to ask about the replacement, I told them I'd sold it as it was worse and bought a brand new one direct from the Apple store. They understood that I wanted to get out of the replacement loop and to start afresh with a 14 day exchange period. They have also rein-burst me what I lost selling it on and for all the trouble I have gone through. I now have a few quid to spend in the online Apple store which they are going to send me once I've made my choice. Very kind of them. Top notch customer service! Just wish their QC was the same

*Goes off to FINALLY play with my 'new' toy*

So did you sell "the bad replacement" and highlight the screen issue to your buyer or did you just offload it and buyer be damned. If the buyer get's back to you complaining about the screen are you going to take it back and offer a refund? I'm sure you could have insisted on a refund from Apple if the fault was that bad?

If you were completely upfront with your purchaser then fair enough but if you just offloaded such a defective iPad screen on them then that would leave a some what bad taste in ones mouth, hopefully it was the former.

Maybe you need some "Apple Lights". I wonder if they should start selling them alongside the new iPad?

Don't stress. The replacement was sold to a family member, hence the loss in money. They are one of those couldn't give a damn as long as it's cheaper kinda people

I had originally also contemplated selling my 3 so I wouldn't have to rely on the good graces of the Geniuses to get an exchange. But I ran into this same moral dilemma. Can't in good conscience offload this to someone without telling them about this issue. But if the issue were to be highlighted, no one would buy it.

Have I not already stated that is was not just 'offloaded' on to an unwitting victim lol. I sold it to an uncaring family member who coulnd't give a damn if the screen was NEON pink. They got a brand new 3 for a lower price and they were/are happy.
