I do run AV on my iMac. (Sophos anti-virus for Mac - it's free.) Occasionally it picks up on an attachment to a spam email that it identifies as being malware. Even on the assumption that it couldn't do any harm to my Mac, there is always the possibility of sharing emails with others who use Windows, and it might harm them.

I recommend avoiding Sophos, as it can actually increase a Mac's vulnerability, as described here and here.

If you haven't already done so, I encourage you to read: What about sending files to Windows users? from the: Mac Virus/Malware FAQ.

While Anti-Virus programs are a waste of space on OS X, do i need a program that searches for other malware like trojans?

No, not if you practice safe computing, as described in post #11 of this thread.

Alright thanks :)

I'm practicing safe computing, but paranoid like I am I ran Malwarebytes Anti-Malware software every now and then when i worked with Windows.

Isn't there a similar program to OSX just to check in order to be 100% there's nothing there.

You might use ClamXav to run a scan on OS X.

As MBAM is one of my regular clean up and maintenance utilities for my windows clients I would just use clamxav if you are bothered and want to check every now and then. The one from the clamxav website and not the app store though!

As long as what I said earlier in the thread if you have java disabled in the browser and keep your plug ins up to date eg flash you should be fine, along with adobe reader if you really need it but OSX has PDF support built in anyway.

Lol - I just pick up the pieces from customers afterwards! I tell them in future to use a standard account if they need to frequent those places again or better still use their iPad :D

I think the simple rule is that when an "adult" website tells you to install some software in order to see naughty pictures or watch naughty videos, then don't.
