Macbook Air seems worst of both worlds, its approaching the pro in size without its power, then you have a noisy fan as well. Macbook is sorely needed and should be a great fit for arm. Not sure if they should reuse 5 year old body at this point or debut a 13” with even smaller body.

Yeah and it's performance is kinda meh.

Honestly I'm waiting for the 12" MacBook as I need something mobile to browse the web, comment in here and do the random ocasional Home office on the beach or the pool.

My girlfriends MacBook Air 2010 just died on her yesterday. Don't you guys agree with me that she should wait for the rumored 2020 Macbook ARM release? She basically can use my MacBook Pro anytime she wants, just that she likes to have her own computer with all of her pictures and stuff.

"... pictures and stuff" can be segregated by means of user accounts. One of the main advantage of Mac over iOS.

A tech YouTuber posted this video a few days ago crapping on the 12" MacBook. Some fair points, but a whole lot of misses.

No, it doesn't suck. I don't buy laptops to run Cinebench and running a couple of tabs doesn't produce a meltdown. What I love are the comments from folks who wholeheartedly disagree with his assessment. They could be you.

I think this kind of "content creators" don't understand that these light laptops are just for office work and doing emails / and whatever easy tasks you got on the hand.

I like the 12" because it replaces an iPad for me.

Definitely agree with you on that. It weighs a lot more (ignore all the "ItS oNly xlBs mOrE!" junk), pick one up and then pick up Macbook -- it's like night and day. It was barely more performant as well. Yet when it came out all the reviews where glowing and it was all about how the Macbook 12 has no place in the lineup.

For the reasons you give, it's the Air that has no place in the line up -- apart from being cheap.

It will be interesting how things go forward if Apple does bring back the Macbook 12. One port is fine for me, as long as it's TB; although, two would be nice!

That YouTube video just highlights how out of touch with the Macbook's users. As a developer, I loved the machine and could get a lot done when travelling to clients.

It's called "polarization" – and it's easier to get content shared (and re-shared) if it's highly opinionated (i.e. polarized) even though it's not 100% correct.

Proof: you've just shared that YouTube video.

Right now as it stands, If I get the 12" I'll leave the 16" on my desk connected to my monitors to work without a problem.

I just need home-brew working on ARM

The thought of a 12" Apple Silicon Macbook is absurdly appealing to me as a couch and travel computer. I've wanted a 2015-2017 Macbook 12" for a while, but was concerned mainly about the longevity (speed) and keyboard reliability. Sounds like speed won't be a problem with Apple Silicon and hopefully the keyboard reliability is better. Count me in, especially if it's cheaper!

youll love it. I have the 16 inch and still rather use the 12 inch around the house 30% of the time.

It will probably be my next main computer. Easy to carry around and I'll hook it up to an external monitor at home. The most demanding thing I do is photo editing. The A14X should fly in Lightroom.

Lol I am in the exact same spot. I've a last generation maxed out 16" that I use for dev work but I switch back to a 12" in a heartbeat. This form factor is lovable.

I've got a feeling that if the Air had been discontinued in 2015, the spoils of the sales would have simply gone between the Macbook and the 13" MBP and the Macbook might still be here now

yeah... nah.

At the time the 12" MacBook was simply too expensive. The MBA at that time was way less money with better real world performance. And "close enough" in terms of size/weight for most people.

Sure, at the time the screen sucked but it was the "default" "safe" Mac laptop option for many people - durable, cheap to replace, had enough of the ports people needed (a couple of USB type As) for their existing flash drives and external hard drives, and ran faster than the 12".

Sure, you could have lived without the USB type As if you were determined but it meant either dongles, upgrading your devices to type C or using wireless, possibly with new devices. Those costs were on top of the near on double entry price for 12" MacBook vs. entry MBA it was a tough sell for most. Especially the people looking for an entry level MacBook.

The 12" machine would have been great with a CPU that wasn't so crippled, but alas likely what intel likely promised to deliver vs. what they actually delivered was substantially different. The keyboard situation didn't help either.

Reboot the 12" MacBook with a 2020 keyboard and a processor even from the 2020 iPad and it would be a hit.

Since my 12” died a sad death RIP, i’ve been using an iPad 11 with a AMK. A pretty good substitute, but amusingly it weighs a bit more. It does have face recognition, which is great.

I’d rather be using a Macbook, and will snap one up IF they ever get around to making a new one.

Current rumors are that the first Apple Silicon Mac will be a re-incarnated MacBook that will possibly replace the MBA or low-end MBP13s.

I'm still salty that we had to sell my wife's 2017 MacBook because it was too slow for her work. It was the absolute perfect laptop if not for the crippled processor. We will be jumping on an ARM MacBook day one if it's the rumoured $800 price and we can get 16GB of RAM.

I doubt that you will get a powerhouse for $800 by apple

I don't need a powerhouse, that's why I'm so salty lol. The MacBook should have had no issue handling mine and my wife's workload. Anything faster than the current base Mac Mini would be fine and I think that's pretty likely. I imagine the first ARM MacBook will be faster than all of the current base model Macs, it needs to make a statement.

Faster than the base-level MacBook Air and MBP13...I would expect so. But not the base level of "all current Macs" - which includes the MBP16, iMac, iMac Pro and Mac Pro. I expect better than entry-level MBP13, but not quite as good at the higher-end MBP13 options with 10th gen Intel.

Base model Macs are the MacBook Air, 13" MacBook Pro, Mac Mini and 21.5" iMac. With the exception of the Mac Pro none of the ones you mentioned are base model and obviously the Mac Pro is not included when discussing base model Macs.

Same. I loved my 12" (had it for work and was oced to return it), and when an ARM-version is available I will buy it.
I have an iPad Pro (largest possible) but sometimes a macbook would be better for my workflow.

For sure, for me it replaces an iPad, laptop and desktop (I have it hooked up to a 4K monitor, with trackpad & keyboard, at times). It's been a blast, still loving it, but it's definitely time for an upgrade. If an ARM 12" is released I'll be ecstatic. And if it has a full-fat 40gbps thunderbolt port, it'll be *perfection*. I'm definitely going larger than 8gb RAM this time, the 8 -> 16gb jump makes a huge difference. And might even go for the 512gb model, to give me some breathing room. Can't wait, c'mon Apple!

I haven't bought an iPad Pro because I have to write a lot and don't wanna buy an expensive keyboard. I'm definitely interested on the 12" can't wait to see.
