I don't think its looking great for a new one...

I think the fact that the new iPad Air works with the Magic Keyboard means Apple will see this as their entry-level device/ultra-portable. A few reviews of the Air have also made that point.

I don't agree with it, but I also think Apple's view is a 12" alongside the 13" Air isn't worth it for the costs v sales.

That and - let's be honest - Apple has neglected the Mac and MacOS for so long. It's so clear it's playing second fiddle to iPhone/iPad/iOS, it's not even funny.

So they'll do the bare minimum to get away with it (iPhone/iPad proven ARM processor in old 13" and 16" MBP case, same internals, same screen, same everything). Bare minimum.

RIP dear 12" Macbook.

If they don't release an ARM version next week (as rumors indicate only 13" Air/MBP and 16") then I'm afraid there will never be a 12"er again. Pity as I loved the look and feel in gold, the form factor and cheer joyness of the device. The Air is just another entry-level notebook.

exactly

Apple used to push boundaries with their computers that 12 inch Macbook form factor is revolutionary.

CPU-Monkey seems to think the A14X MacBook line will include a 12" model.

They even claim to have Geekbench scores.

How would they know?
They don't list screen resolutions or anything else that would hint what device the processor is in

how reliable are they? when every reliable leaker said no design difference and the same form factor of macbook pro and macbook air will be released.

I’m a little disappointed as the 12” MacBook would have been perfect for the new M1 chip.

Now I am debating whether to purchase the new MacBook Air or go with a used 16gb/512gb ssd 2017 MacBook.

I have that exact 2017 MacBook and am still holding out hope that Apple eventually releases an updated version. But I also ordered the 13" Air to check it out.

I will keep an eye out for a good condition 2017 MacBook. I am not a power user and the 2015 I have still does everything I need it to, however would like 512gb storage space. A 2017 spec with 16gb RAM would be the icing on the cake.

Funny that’s the exact model I bought last year because I wanted (another) MacBook 12”. And now I’m wondering if I should get the new Air. Such decisions we have.

Sad to not see a 12" in the initial lineup. When I saw that the Air M1 was fan-less, was ready to order it as that was a feature at the top of my list. It still is, however the MB 12 still offers an experience like no other MacBook so I think I'll stick with it for now. Though I'm sure I'll be tempted again once we start seeing real-world reviews on how fast M1 is.

One of the somewhat credible leakers said that the 12" ARM MacBook is delayed until Q2 2021 because they are working on a new butterfly keyboard (seriously) and it needs more time. Don't give up. It's coming.
exactly, seriously lol.
why cant they just use the existing new magic keyboard

if the reason of the delay is because they are still insisting on the faulty butterfly keyboard, is annoying

especially when the magic keyboard which is reliable can be put on the ipad keyboard which is thinner than the macbook 12 inch keyboard chassis.

Don't believe that for a second. No one would buy it with a butterfly. Seriously.

This is wishful thinking, but I think a perfect 2021 lineup would be four models, with 12" MacBook, 14" Air & Pro, and 16" Pro.
or a 14.1'' MBP, 16'' MBP and a 12.9'' Macbook/Air in the original 12'' chassis but with smaller bezels. They must have spent a fortune in R&D for the 12'' rMB (like the development of the terraced battery). Footprint (size and weight) as the 12''. It would differentiate the MB/Air a bit more from the MBP as well, while using the same M1 cpu.

I was really hoping for a $799-$849 price point 12" MB with M1. It would have been the perfect device for me add to my existing lineup and dive into ARM/Apple Silicon etc. The 13" MBA isn't that much more, but that is kinda my breaking point where at $999 I want it to do more - so then want to get 16GB so it ends up being $400 more... ;)

"Butterfly Keyboard" = Unreliable/Problematic, even in the eyes of those who've never used them. If a new 12" does come out with a hardened more reliable descendant of the BK, they better not call it "Butterfly."
