Sorry op but it's not going to happen. If apple is going to offer 64gb it'll be in the iPhone 5. Now stop bitching and sync less over if you want space. No one consumes 32gb of music videos and apps in 24-48 hours till the next time you could sync.

If you organise your iTunes library then syncing new content takes no time at all

A little disppointed as well, but 32GB will be much better than the 16GB I have now. If they do release a 64GB next year, I may just sell the 32GB and do an early upgrade.

They did that because they only had one model being sold at the time. They've never had that happen since, so there's really no reason to do so.

Yeah, but they also never left the memory specs without an upgrade for more than 16 months before. And the 8GB was only the only model on the market because the 4GB was removed early. And we've never been in a situation since the 2G where the NANDs for extra capacity were being manufactured already, but not used because they were still too expensive at a model's launch.

We can't predict the future here, but I think there's every possibility of a 2G style mid cycle memory upgrade.

At the same time ... even if they put 64Gb come January, the new iPhone will only be 6 months away ... might as well wait at that point.

Uh..who told you this? Right, no one because you just made it up.
Uh seriously? You're wrong.

Probably so, but if you really want the 64GB then just wait. Of course if it doesn't come out then you'll be waiting a while potentially.

The 3G had 8GB/16GB from the start. It was the 2G that had a 16GB model released outside of the 'normal' cycle. 2G had 4GB/8GB, then the price cut in September, then the 4GB was discontinued and the 16GB added.

^ This.

Me thinks you (CJayC) need to understand there was an iPhone before the 3G came out and that is the increased capacity phone that had a release following the initial launch.

Well ifyoure so sure about the date then don't buy it until then if you must have 64gb.

I don't care because I don't want to watch all my stuff in one 100hr+ session.
Apple don't care because they will sell more than the OP is worth
The general user won't care because it beats other phones on the market for capacity and the general user won't bother with expandable memory.

Just like how Feb 2009 the 16GB iPhone 3G came out. It'll suck to buy the amazing iPhone 4 just to have the 64GB version come out 8 months later.

Huh? The 16 GB iphone was out back in June, 2008 when it was new (I have one, it's 2 years old. I'm due for my contract running out).

I too was GREATLY disappointed that there was no 64GB iPhone released. I did understand why however - because 64GB NAND flash modules are still probably $150 wholesale cost to Apple, and their is no way they can put that into a $299 subsidized phone right now. They could have of course choose to have a third higher pricing tier of say $399 subsidized or more, but with the economy the way it is, they might have felt that was bad press. Plus, I doubt that they could be produced in sufficient quantity right now anyway.

However, I know that Apple wants to get rid of the iPod Classic. In order to do that, they would have to release a 128GB iPod Touch in September. Hopefully by then, 64GB NAND chips will have come down somewhat in price and be available in greater quantity. If that DOES happen, there is certainly a CHANCE that a 64GB iPhone could be released at the same time at a $399 subsidized price point. Not likely mind you, but certainly a chance.

Call me dumb but I didn't think there was such thing as a 64GB micro sd? I know it's possible to have two 32GB msd at once but the iPhone only has one memory slot.
Could it be that it just isn't possible at the moment?
Just so you know my stance I am also dissapointed with no 64GB

The iPod Touch is 64GB because it has 2 memory slots, and the iPhone only has one. It seems that when there is a new size of microSD card coming out, then the iPhone gets updated memory. I haven't heard of a 64GB microSD yet. I'm not ready for the iPhone 4, so it's easy for me to wait for next years model with 64GB.

64GB NAND is available already. The problem is more likely 1 of 2 things:

1) They don't have a high enough yield yet to meet Apples reqs
2) The price is still too high

I agree and for the same reasons thought a mid-cycle 64GB launch might be in the cards. But now I no longer think so. Back in 2007, Apple was still getting the hang of things. One could call the 4GB iPhone a failure as there was little to no interest in it. The 16GB iPhone was a response to filling the void left by the removal of the 4GB iPhone.

Currently Apple has a lineup they are happy with. I doubt they will do a mid-cycle refresh unless they see the potential of big sales before the launch of the iPhone 5. I'm not going to gamble on it.

It's not about listening/watching my media all in one session. It's about not having to pick and choose what media I have with me. I hate it when I want to share a song with a friend and realize it wasn't synced to my phone because I could only carry 50% of my media with me.

And wireless streaming isn't the best solution as it requires 100% access to 3G or WiFi and that's just not always there and when it is it kills the battery.

I am not sure what you are referring to because on purchased the iPhone 3G on launch day July 2008, and I have 16GB.

The original iPhone had a release of 16GB during February 2008. I am pretty sure that is due to the fact that at the time, there was only 8GB on the market due to the discontinue of 4GB in September 2007.

EDIT: Sorry for the double post. When I clicked reply, there was no one else that said this. Weird computer.

It's not a matter of consuming that much media or needing that many apps. It's about having that particular song/picture/video or app you want right then, and that can't be predicted. I have to manually sync my music and have left almost half of my music library off my 32GB iPhone because I just don't have room for it, so when I'm talking to someone about a random song or suddenly get one stuck in my head and want to listen to it, there's a fairly decent chance that I don't have it with me because I either didn't have room and left it off when I initially loaded my iPhone, or I didn't notice that it was part of my library and failed to manually transfer it to my iPhone when I ripped it.

Same thing with pictures -- I have maybe 1/20th of my iPhoto library on my iPhone because I just don't have room for it, and I've had to pare down my apps significantly (and reduce the amount of space they use, like I don't allow Slacker to cache stations despite my desire to thanks to bad network performance) for the same reason.

And given that the iTunes Store is trying to get people to pay for movies, which I'm sure Apple at least partially hopes people take with them on their iPhones and other devices, storage space is key to allow people to buy movies/TV shows and sync them to their iPhones. My mother-in-law routinely buys movies and TV shows to bring with her on long plane flights -- but I can't because each movie takes up over a gig of space that I can't spare. For all of these reasons, I was one of the people hoping for a 64GB iPhone 4, and because Apple isn't offering one, I will not be upgrading... but that doesn't mean that I can't complain about it.

Look, I'm not saying that your way of allocating your allotted iPhone storage space is wrong. I'm just saying that to tell someone else that theirs is wrong is not cool, since not everyone uses media the same way you do. That would be like me telling you that because I don't watch sports, I shouldn't have to pay for a cable lineup that features 18 different ESPN and Fox Sports channels so the cable company should just air 2 of them and everyone else should **** and stop complaining because that should be enough.

All of you saying that 32GB is lame, realize that, that is more media than you could use in about 8 days @ 24 hours a day, right?

More people having dilemma now. I have iPad 64GB 3G and now no brainer for me to buy the 16GB iPhone 4.

I predict you are going to have a very unhappy life!

Your poor wife to be!

How old are you?

lets remember the 1st gen had a price drop from $599 to $399 for the 8gb and when the 16GB came out it was $499.
:apple: nor ATT are going to be pricing it any lower this time.

To be honest, I would get a lot more excited with a 128GB rollout...If the only possibility is a 64GB rollout in a few months, I will stick with the iPhone 4 32GB.

I have WAY more content than 32GB, and even WAY more than 64GB so the 64GB wouldn't help me out that much.

I have the iPod touch 3rd gen 64GB for "gym" time....I can live with having to make major "choices" with a 32GB iPhone 4, which, at the very least, is much more than my 3G 16GB anyway.

Converting Youtube video via a converter to H.264 is a great thing. For me, THAT is what is taking up the most space, so I have chosen to only sync very few playlists to my current iPhone, and keeping the vast majority on my iPod Touch 64GB.

Gotta love that free content!

I agree that the lack of 64GB is a pain, particularly since as a DJ most of my music is in the more memory-heavy 320KBps format.

My apps are already taking up 4.09GB, with 18GB of audio (a significant chunk of which is in the form of podcasts, which I enjoy subscribing to in iTunes).

I currently sync all my apps and the three most recent episodes of all my podcasts, although I may have to start becoming more discriminating in future.
On the odd occasion that I do sync videos, I have to ensure I delete these immediately after watching, in order to save the memory space.

My 32GB iPhone 3GS frequently fills up -- one useful option to pack more audio on there is to select the 'Convert higher bit rate songs to 128kbps AAC' within iTunes, and although this is obviously a compromise on audio quality, it probably doesn't make much difference when listening over the iPhone earphones.

Although a mid-cycle 64GB upgrade is certainly possible, I also suspect it probably won't happen until this time next year.

It does make upgrading now a bit of a bitter pill to swallow, as for me all that I really value in the iPhone 4 updated hardware is a camera with a flash (finally!) and improved battery life. No doubt the new hi-res screen with look pretty etc., but that's really a cosmetic upgrade.

I have the iPad 3G 64GB and would have been happy to pay the premium for a 64GB iPhone -- it's already a bit of a pain having to make separate choices about what to sync on my 3GS and iPad when I basically want the same content on each, and I think those choices are just going to become more of a pain with the iPhone 4 32GB...

People will never be satisified. So if apple releases a 64gb iPhone people will complain about not having a 128gb iPhone or 256 or 512gb iPhone.

The fact is none of apple's competitors are even closed to 32GB app and storage space. Android has an app storage limitation that has yet to be resolved but they will one day on the future. Try buying a 64GB microSD card with android.

Memory prices for 64GB single NAND chip are still too high.

I've never come close to filling my 32GB 3GS. I usually only put a couple music albums on here and keep like 300 photos/videos. If there was a 64GB I would have gotten it because this HD video camera is going to be a memory hog...
