I'm looking to change my green bubbles to blue.

I'm sure there's a way to SSH and change any "SMS"references to "Messages" but I don't know the location.

I went here:

http://www.modmyi.com/forums/new-ski...ollection.html

and downloaded the folder after registering with that site.

Using SSH navigate to:

/System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/ChatKit.framework/

and replace the Balloon_1.png and Balloon_2.png files with the .png images/colors of your choice. Cyberduck works great.

Balloon_1.png is the Sender (you)
Balloon_2.png is the Recipient (your friend)

It's very simple and easier than you might think. Good luck! :)

Awesome. I tried to download the chatkit folder from the iphone so I could play around with the files and perhaps get a new background to work. When I tried to open any of the .png files though, I keep getting an error. Any idea why? It says the file format module cannot parse the file (this is in Photoshop CS3).

Thanks

Is Winterboard needed?

No, that's not correct. If you're replacing the original files in /System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/ChatKit.framework/ you do NOT need WinterBoard. All you need is OpenSSH, to be able to access the folder. ;)

youd still be better off using winterboard
everything is much more easily reversible

also, should anyone decide to do it manually like described, BACK UP the original bubbles (just rename them to baloon_1backup.png, baloon_2backup.png or something similar) so that should you wish to revert to normal, the files are there

i would advise everyone never to completly delete a file that came with your iPhone/iPod

Thanks. I hate the idea of installing winterboard -- I'd prefer to do whatever changes I can manually rather than having some 3rd party app running. :)

Do tell! How could I find these files via SSH and replace there iPhone OS counterparts? This is what I have running (I would prefer to install myself and not use Winterboard, it seems to drain the battery) :

Zelda Sounds
Volume Boost 3.0
No Docked Icon Labels
Transparent Dock
User Wallpaper
2001 Rainbow Battery
Red Chat Progress
Red Mail Progress
Edge to 3G Icons
:)

Has anyone actually gotten this working as a theme under Winterboard, replacing the SMS bubbles? I'm getting to the point that I'm believing that anyone who claims so is a liar, as I've downloaded three or four themes from the web that claim to work (none do) and I've spent the past 2 hours trying to get it to work to no avail.

I've tried in the main theme directory:
/Bundles/com.apple.chatkit/Balloon_1.png
/Bundles/com.apple.chatkit/balloon_1.png
/Bundles/com.apple.Chatkit.framework/Balloon_1.png
/Bundles/com.apple.Chatkit.framework/balloon_1.png
/Bundles/com.apple.ChatKit.framework/Balloon_1.png
/Bundles/com.apple.ChatKit.framework/balloon_1.png
/Folders/Chatkit.framework/Balloon_1.png
/Folders/Chatkit.framework/balloon_1.png
/Folders/ChatKit.framework/Balloon_1.png
/Folders/ChatKit.framework/balloon_1.png
/Folder/Chatkit.framework/Balloon_1.png
/Folder/Chatkit.framework/balloon_1.png
/Folder/ChatKit.framework/Balloon_1.png
/Folder/ChatKit.framework/balloon_1.png
/Chatkit.framework/Balloon_1.png
/Chatkit.framework/balloon_1.png
/ChatKit.framework/Balloon_1.png
/ChatKit.framework/balloon_1.png

None of them do a thing. Does anyone here have a clue as to what I am missing?

Here is what you have to do to get sms bubbles to work in Winterboard:

1. Create a folder named "SMS bubbles" on your desktop (No quotation marks)
2. Inside that folder create a folder named "Bundles"
3. Inside the "Bundles" folder create a folder named "com.apple.chatkit"
4. Place the balloon colors that you would like to use in the "com.apple.chatkit" folder
5. SSH the SMS bubbles folder into your themes section in winterboard
6. Apply the theme in winterboard
7. Done

I still haven't found a way to change the background yet.

Why that worked I have no idea, but thank you! I also heard in my research that, that nobody has figure out yet how to get the background changed. Hopefully someone will find it....

Not sure I understand all you are trying to do.

Are you just trying to change the color of your SMS bubbles ?

If so, just replace the balloon_1.png and balloon_2.png in this path....

/System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/ChatKit.framework/

Save originals in case.

You don't have to create any folders this way, no Winterboard to check, and the colors work with every theme you choose (in case you vary your themes as I do)

If this is not your objective, please disregard.

He gave instructions on how to make it its own stand alone winterboard theme. Many people like myself do not like to touch the original system files. i would rather just activate/deactivate a winterboard theme if I ever wanted to return to stock instead of having to ssh back in and re-rename the old files to their original names

Yea, see I am of the opposite group.

I just replace what I want to mod in the original folders (keeping a copy of the original, of course) instead of having a dozen different themes running in Winterboard.

All works the same !!

From Cydia, something called Quantum works for the bubbles if you don't want to SSH it. I makes them purple and blue and tweaks the bubble design

I really don't see why everyone is so scared of SSH'ing; especially when there are GUI clients that enable you to drag and drop just like Finder. I could understand people's hesitations about using Terminal; but come on, you're simply dragging and dropping files.

SSH is sooooo last year.

Use DiskAid. Its much easier to do and the file transer is much faster since its over USB.

Simple as using a thumb drive.
